I am *thinking* of returning to college. I already have my bachelors degree and would like to go back to get my bachelors in respiratory therapy. I have never attended college while having children in my home. I graduated w/my 1st bachelors in 2000! Has anyone here gone back to college with children in your home? How difficult is it? Can it be done? Is it a dumb idea? Any input would be great to hear.

I personally didn't but a girl who worked for me did. She was 27 had 2 kids and a husband in prison. She has been going for almost 3 years now and is almost done. It is not easy but it is do able she stays up late to study and gets up early takes one to day care one to school goes to class then goes to work then comes home prepares a homecooked meal at least 5 out of seven nights. They are on a very limited budget she only works 30 hours or less.

First of all, it is not a dumb idea. Congrats on your decision! I have gone to college with kids at home, however, I've never had to work while doing it, and I have always gone during the day while they are at school. I also do all of my studying while they are in school. I'm not sure what it would be like having toddlers or young children who are at home all of the time. I imagine you either study while they sleep, or study with plenty of interruptions. It can be done! I recently went to a Women in Transition workshop, and there were a lot of women going to college, working, and raising young children. I don't know how they do it, but they do! Strong women!
mom363546, kudos to your friend. I can't imagine doing what she is doing. My heart goes out to her. |
