Actually, "these tattoo parlors" that you speak of have health codes. It is up to the person getting the tattoo/piercing to check into the practices of the parlor they are going to. My husband and I have tattoos , both of us have had piercings. If our kids want either one...they have to wait til they are of legal age. We will not sign for them to get anything done. I think what the OP is doing is awesome! Educating herself to explain why she says yes or no is great parenting. I never could understand the "Because I said so" from my parents!

I had mine done when I turned 18 and it was not what i expected. ept0202 is right that your tongue swells up so big and i lived on chicken broth for over a week. Even after that I had to relearn how to chew certain foods so i wouldn't catch food and pull on the barbell. Spaghetti was the trickiest one I ended up getting a mild infection because I used flavored mouthwash instead of the nasty regular kind to keep it cleaned. Good thing to know!!! I had to take mine out when i had my son and by the time I left the hospital it had closed and i wasn't able to get it back in. I too miss mine sometimes but I would never go through the pain for it again!!!

I was 28 when I got mine pierced, and I don't think I would let my daughter get hers done unless she was of age. It hurts and I know of several people who got theirs pierced and it was crooked! Also one of my friends got an infection, she had this green stuff around the ring, it was so gross. I took mine out before I had my daughter because it can chip your teeth. I also had a doctor tell me to take it out unless I wanted to end up with a lot of dental problems, because it can wear down the enamel on your teeth. To me its not worth the problems it can cause. Also if you dont check to make sure the balls on the barbell are tight constantly you could swallow them!

I had a friend with one and she loved hers but admitted to chipping several teeth on it - especially in her sleep. A piece of jewlery isn't worth those types of dental bills if you ask me...

Goodness gracious.........I had my belly button pierced about 12 years ago - and I think the only reason my hubby let me do it is because he didn't thinkI would actually go through with it!!! Well, I did........and for about 5 weeks regretted it every day!! Talf about pain and discomfort - I can't imagine getting my tongue pierced!!

I am sorry to say - and completely my opinion - but tongue piercings depict a "lower class" to me. Please don't let them get this done. They are soooo young - are they really going to want this when they get to be in their.....hmmmm....late 30's??? Men view this as something completely differently - and they will be view as such!!

"Because I said so" from a parent or authority figure prepares the child for the world. Not always does one get an answer from a superior; they shouldn't if it is not putting them in jeopardy, breaking God's laws, or breaking man's. If the superior wants to offer a rationale, that is fine, but don't question it for something frivolous. When you see a STOP sign, do you question why you should stop? When my children were growing up, I told them there would be times they'd want to question my rationale, but they'd not always get an answer. 2 joined the military and found out that one does NOT question a superior; they accept the answer and move on. Yep, I was a tough mama, and still am. Not always is there time to give a rationale.

Default Ouch

I cannot imagine doing this on my tongue, Ouch! and pain are not something I like or want to impose on myself, I have enough pains in other parts of my body. I don't see the attraction to this, perhaps I am too old to understand what the attraction is, this is a fad I guess?

Carol...I am 22 years old and feel the same way you do. I just dont understand it. I think it would be more pain than pleasure!
