Gosh it's getting cold out and already I'm suffering through it's ill effects.
My main concern? Ok, this is gross but my nasal passages get SO dry this time of the year that I can barely stand it. This year I am seriously considering getting a dehumidifier for the night but I'm wondering if anyone has any product recommendations for this problem. Currently I rub all around my nose with Vicks for that soothing feeling but it's kind of hard to go to work with your nose looking like grease!
Also I have oily skin, but get those gross flakes this time of the year. If I go with moisturizers that are too heavy I break out, well once I break out I try to clear that up and get all flaky again.
Any suggestions????

VC I have the same problem! I use a vaporizer....it puts moisture into the air and does not leave the furniture wet! You can usually find them for 10 -15 dollars, I buy the cheapest one.....then in the little tray I use vicks...I like the smell, but you could use an essential oil or leave it empty....

If you can't get a vaporizer right now, you can take a tin can full of water and put it in the heating vent if you have floor vents. I used to do that for my son when it was so dry he'd get nosebleeds.
For your skin, just don't use anything on it when you shower. In the winter, I just let the water do it, 'cause I dry out, too if I don't. This way, you are not too oily because the time of the year, and not too dry from washing. Just buff up with the washrag.

thats a good idea too! or you can also boil a large pan of water, keep it going for hours if you want, just add water as it simmers down....as long as you have moisture in the air it will help.
I use Baby Oil when I take a shower...when you are done, before drying off, squirt some baby oil in you hand rub together and then rub on your arms, stomach, and legs...and even your face, then dry off, it sure makes a difference...and it is cheap! cause you can use any brand of baby oil.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm DEFINETLY getting the vaporizer. I do like the smell of Vicks (just the thought of it is soothing to me right now!) I think tonight I'll try the pan of heat on my register and see if it helps until I can make it over to Walmart.
I think you're right about using just water this time of year. I think just about any product I'm using (even the moisturizing kind) are just too harsh this time of year. I've also heard people mention jojoba oil to cleanse so I also thought about checking that out.
Right now my nose is the biggest problem. Gosh I feel like a young school kid sitting here rubbing my nose, it's just so dry and irritating. Today must of been dryer than usual that it kind of hit me like a ton of bricks.

Use saline nasal spray for your nose, it's moisturizing. For your flakey skin, I'd use plain 'ol Vaseline! By morning, it'll look a lot better! ;)

Only my hands get really chapped in the dry weather. They get so bad that my fingers feel like sandpaper and my fingers crack and splits, usually just on the thumbs. I have tried just about every kind of moisturizer. Corn huskers lotion worked pretty well, but I can't seem to find it in the stores anymore. My husband even gave me a special lotion last year for Christmas--it cost about $15.
I tried a sample of Curel ultra healing lotion (A sample...really...wherever did I get it????). This stuff works really well. My hands aren't as red and prickly as last year and the crease where my thumb usually cracks hasn't appeared yet.

I have a bottle of saline spray but it just doesn't work that well for me, it does help some, especially if your nose isn't completely blocked.....and, if you do buy it you can buy the generic brand, it works just as well.

I always just took the register vent off, put the can down inside. Then every so often I'd refill it.
Have you tried those new Puffs that smell like Vicks?? Those are awesome!!

Oh wow, I never heard of those with Vicks in it...I am going to try that...I love the smell of Vicks, it reminds me of when I was a kid and mom would plaster that stuff on my throat then wrap my neck with a dish towel and pin it...great memories! I still have 1 glass jar of Vicks! still smells good!!

Did you ever try that cow udder cream? My dad swears by it! His hands crack like yours in the winter.

Our oldest daughter used to get a bloody nose several times a day in the Winter. Our pediatrician suggested we use a vaporizer at night, (Carol suggested this) and take a Q-Tip with Vaseline on it and swab her nostrils during the day to keep them moisturized.
She is now 29 1/2 and still does this when her nose starts to dry out.
As for your skin try using baby soap. It is the perfect PH balance and most are hypo-allergenic, and smell good! My personal favorite... Chamomile and Lavender Bedtime Bath...LOL!

GREAT suggestion!!! My older sister and I used this on our Mom when she was hospitalized for 3 weeks prior to her demise. It worked GREAT!!
We found it at WalMart in the fabric section.

Carol, my Mom did the same thing to me!! She also would plaster it on my chest since I had tonsillitis ALL the time!! She would iron a face cloth to get it warm, then put it over the Vicks so my jammies wouldn't stick to my chest...LOL!!

For the dry nose, you need to get a nasal rinse or neti pot to irrigate your sinus cavities. I had sinus surgery 2 years ago and my ENT told me that I would have to do this from now on........It is SO WONDERFUL! I use the NasalRinse and you can get it at Walgreens/CVS. It is like $12 for the bottle and the packets of solution. The only thing is, you have to do it at least 2 hours before bed. You have to sit up after doing it because you are going to drain and drip! Especially everytime you bend over.
I also use the petroleum jelly on a Q-tip and swab the inside of my nose. Big help!
As for the skin dryness, Utter Cream rocks (I am actually from a town just outside of where it was invented and yes!, they really do use it on the milking cows) Also, Aveeno for Extremely dry chapped skin. It comes in the tan and blue bottle. It is wonderful and it is non-greasy which is of dire importance to me.

To help humidify your house, after your shower while your drying off fill your bath tub a 1/4 with water (then for kids bath time just add hot water). If you have double sinks in the bath fill one with water & the kitchen double sink too.

I had sinus surgery a number of years ago. My ENT advises saline washes when my schnozz gets dry. I use a neti pot (http://www.himalayaninstitute.org/Netipot/NetiPotGateway.aspx). I mix 16 oz. of water, a heaping 1/2 tsp. of non-iodized salt, warm it to a little warmer than body temperature. Check it on your wrist, like a baby's bottle. Rinse that brain, as my DH laughingly calls it. Don't use warm water from the faucet, it's been sitting around in that water heater.... I saw the insides of an old water heater once, when it fell apart as we were taking it out. Talk about gross...

My husband bought me a cell phone as an early Christmas gift and I would have preferred the Vaporizer!!!!! Someone mentioned the Vicks scented Puffs and they are nice, it's like you just want to keep wiping your nose over and over!!! LOL, my mom used to rub me down with Vicks too growing up. My husband said his grandmother made them eat it  he can't use the stuff to this day without gagging a little.

When my kids are really congested I close the bathroom doors and put the shower on to HOT... It get really steamy in the bathroom and we sit there(with the kids). It seems to help alot but I usually use the vaporizer at night as well. If you live in a warm climate I suggest you buy one that blows cold air out. I had one of those when I was a kid growing up in Florida...I never wanted something hot blowing around in my room!! Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh, I cannot even imagine anyone eating Vicks!! It clearly says for external use only...do not swallow or place in nostrils...maybe grandma had bad eyes?? and could not read the instructions, I can see why he would gag!

Are you talking about Bag Balm? I use that stuff on my dogs when they get superficial cuts and abrasions. I'm sure it would be great for chapped hands, but I don't think I could get past the way it smells. I need something that smells pretty!

Have you tried coating your hands before bed (either with your Curel, some vasoline, or other lotion) then covering up with rubber gloves to sleep in? They say that's really effective.

It works wonders. You can do this to your feet as well. I would recommend using Vaseline for really dry skin. I love the way my skin looks after doing this overnight.

Flavored Petroleum Jelly is all that is in those really expensive tubes you buy at the pet stores so no worries there. It kills me what they charge for those little tubes. I have used Olive Oil and of course Butter too. With any kind of lubricant, you just have to be careful not to give too much, otherwise, you are going to have one heck of a messy litterbox to clean up.
