http://www.1968pennies.com/

I thought this was cool, so I went through my penny basket and found 5 of the 1968 pennies that I'm going to mail in! I have a question for the mods at the bottom of this post about the linking....

From the website (About)-

The 1968 penny collection began on September 27th, 1999 with just a single 1968 penny, and over the years it has steadily grown both in size and the number of contributors.

The goal of this website is to keep the collection growing indefinitely by soliciting 1968 pennies from as many people as possible. This is a group effort.

Everybody who contributes pennies to the 1968 penny collection will be featured on this website.

Quality and condition of pennies is unimportant, as all certifiable 1968 pennies (whether uncirculated & shiny, or well-worn & grimy) are accepted and added to the collection equally.

All pennies are 100% 1968 guaranteed, and this collection is never to be cashed in, as its value as a collector's item is greater than its monetary value.

Of the 4,858,503,583 pennies minted in 1968, an untold number have been forever lost to history, which is why it is important to save the remaining 1968 pennies NOW while they are still relatively easy to find. If every American donated just one 1968 penny, the collection would number in the hundreds of millions.

And for the price of just one cent (provided it's a 1968 cent) your name will be forever linked to this historic collection.

Please take a moment to go through your pockets, purses, and piggy banks, and send your 1968 pennies to 1968 pennies.com . Thanks.

You can either mail your spare 1968 pennies to the following address:

1968pennies.com
P.O. Box 1968
Lawrence, KS 66044

Or if you are in the Lawrence, KS area you can bring your pennies to:

"Beyond the Door"
918 Massachusetts St.
Lawrence, Kansas

And when you donate, you can request to have your name linked to the website of your choice. *PROMOTE YOUR WEBSITE HERE!
Is there a website you would like to promote or share with others? Now when you contribute one or more 1968 pennies to 1968pennies.com, not only will your name be added to the contributor's list, but I will link your name to the website of your choice. That's right, for the price of only 1¢ (provided it's a 1968 cent) you can now promote your website on this website.

My question - Should we *promote the SS site? If we are sending in as members? Is that allowable or even a good idea??? Thanks!!(I'll wait to mail my pennies til I know for sure! :)

My question is why is this person collecting pennies from 1968? What happened to them that they are lost forever in history?

I think that part about being lost is a joke. He's collecting them as some kind of personal project. You know, start something and see how far you can get with it?? Like that guy that started "trading up". He began with something cheesy, traded-up for something slightly less cheesy, up til he was trading things like a free round of golf with Alice Cooper, recreational vehicle, etc. He said he was going to stop when he got a nice home.

I just read alot of the comments on this site, and the "suppose owner" is also linked to a blog site.....I think it's a scam...he never said he wouldn't auction them....so beware...if you want to spend 40 some cents to send him some 1986 pennies.....go ahead

There is an article on boingboing.com, here's the link -

http://www.boingboing.net/2007/11/30/collector-asks-for-y.html
But to give the quick answer, this excerpt from the article:

All pennies are 100% 1968 guaranteed, and this collection is never to be cashed in, as its value as a collector's item is greater than its monetary value.

Mood4Melody.. I was just joking and trying to make everyone laugh.. I could care less about what he does with the pennies that he collects from people, and just because he says that they will never be cashed in dosen't actually mean thats true. No offense to you..I just thought my joke was funny.

Not me and my 5 pennies either. :D I still think it's a neat goal - to collect all the circulating pennies from a particular year. If he gets rich off of it, more power to him. lol

It seems to me that by him taking them out of circulation, he is planning to try to make them more valuable by making them scarce. It sounds to me like it will not be cashed in, but instead sold as a collection when/if it becomes valuable. This is either somewhat scammy or brilliant, depending on how you look at it. Maybe I will just try to gather all of my 1968 pennies and keep them and if this works for him and their value goes up, I can cash in too ;) .
