:( :( :( I just found out Monday that our Siberian Husky, Kody, has heartworms. We will be starting treatment soon. It's very long, expensive, and painful from what I've learned so far but the alternative is worse. Has anyone been through this treatment with their dog before?

Sorry to hear the news about Kody. I understand how much a part of the family our four-legged friends are. My cousin's dog had heartworms 2 years ago and went though the treatment. I don't know much of what was involved, aside from knowing he had the condition. It was time consuming, but definately worth it. Today his dog is back on track and feeling carefree and loveable like dogs should. Prayers are with you and your family for a speedy recovery.

I have a friend whose dog, Sandy, has heart worms. She's had them for about 9 years. His other dog was diagnosed with h.w. the same time as Sandy, but got the treatment and didn't pull through, so he didn't have Sandy treated. I don't know you should go through that or not. I guess if your religious, you should pray for an answer. If not, I'd research it really well to see which option makes the most sense for you.

Good luck and we'll be worrying for you! Hugs to the pup!

Thanks for the replies so far. If anyone else knows anything about it please post. I need all the help I can get on this one!!!
I've already cancelled all holiday travel plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas because he can't be left and he can't go with during this treatment period. I have not scheduled the treatment yet though...I just don't feel right about either decision yet....

sorry to hear your dog has heartworms. My neighbor chose not to do the treatment but has her dog on some type of meds to kill the baby heart worms that are circulating in the blood. I think the idea is kill the babies and then hopefully over time the adults will die of I guess old age or something. ( Did not mean that to sound stupid) Her dog has been on this for several years now. Her doggie is 16 years old too! Hope you have good luck.

I'm so sorry, and I feel terrible for you! I've always given my dogs Heartgard once a month, so they've never gotten it.

Good luck, and let us know what happens. :(

Dawn,

Do not give up hope! Please go to both of these websites..... It is an all natural approach to getting rid of heartworms. I had a friend that did this, and yes, I swear, it worked............

It is worth a shot, afterall, it can't hurt. I know that the injections are very painful and can be life threatening, especially if you can't keep him calm at all times. Some dogs do great with the chemical treatment, and some just can't handle it. Alot depends on age, health, etc......

My thoughts are with you.

Thanks again guys for all the info. The sad thing is my dog was on monthly heartworm treatment...
My husband only had the complete responsibility for 2 things in our household. You guessed it-the heartworm pill was one of them(i even wrote it on the calendar)
The other was to make sure our vehicles were maintained. When we separated/divorced earlier this year our newest vehicle was in need of major repair. He flipped it with my children in it. We didn't have full coverage because of a DUI he received...one was on its last leg..and there were 3 that didn't run at all:eek: I have since gotten the newest repaired which he is complaining about having to pay for:rolleyes: and I sold the other 4.
Sorry, I went on a little tangent there, but I have no doubt that he is the cause of the heartworms and I'm just so **** angry that his irresponsibility is still affecting my household/family:mad:
Thanks for all the advice and support. I really do appreciate it!!;)
