I love hearing about other peoples' pets. Hamsters and cats and guinea pigs and dogs, etc. Oh..... and that made me think of a new topic to add!

I am love by my second greyhound. She is a girl, a little thing of 60 punds, but so fast. Our backyard is her track and no rabbit is safe. Our big boy died in 2005 due to cancer. He was my first and a gift from God and helped my 2 autistic spectrum children very much. He stood 34 inches at the shoulder and was 85 pounds....not an ounce of fat on him. I'll get another boy someday; they don't seem to have " 'tudes" like the girls. This little girl is nicknamed "Miss Prissy Pants" and she is every bit that. She's a thief, stole a ham sandwich right out of my 13 yo's hand, then ate his supper when he went to the fridge to get some milk. Like I said, she's fast! She doesn't like Brussels sprouts, though. Moved the one she stole to the edge of the open patio door, barked at it, took her nose and flipped it outside. She was so proud. The kids cheered. I guess they were in agreement.

For my bday this year the love of my life broke down and let me get a cat!! I love cats. He's a DSH, dark brown and black with light tan and white speckled tigerlike stripes. We rescued him from the Humane Society and he is very happy having so much room in the house(4bdrm2bath). We call him Bucky Katt from the Get Fuzzy comic strip. He also is quite a pampered cat. He won't drink from his dish but will drink from our bathroom faucet!!!

we have a 7-year-old black lab named Sadie, and an 8-month-old yellow lab mix named Daisy. Our daughter's boyfriend found a box at the side of the road last October with 3 puppies in it. We could only take one, but were surely tempted to keep them all. (well, me and daughter were tempted. . . hubby tried to veto keeping ANY of them, but daughter's tearful eyes were too much for him.) we were able to find a home for one of the other puppies, but had to take the remaining one to the shelter. . . it ws adopted the next day! Of course, to her it was the most romantic thing in the world when her BF came in with a boxful of puppies. :D

We have a 4 year old Siberian Husky named Sasha. We rescued her from the animal shelter when she was about 1 year old. The poor thing had been picked up running in very busy shopping area. She was very thin and frightened.
She became very attached to my husband and would not leave him. Followed him so closely that when he stopped she literally would run into him. She also would not eat a thing. He tried all types of dog food but nothing worked. Finally in desperation he started cooking home made meals for her. That did the trick. She began gaining weight and as she became used to us she finally stopped following him so closely. Sometimes he is sorry he started that as she still will eat nothing but the home cooked meals. She still needs to keep us in sight at all times. If we are not both in the same room she goes back and forth between us to make sure we are still here.

I have a flame point persian that's about 1 1/2 old. First male cat I've ever had, he's wonderful. I had a cat of 22 years just pass about 2 years ago, so, he's not a replacement, just a band-aide on our heart. Best thing we could've done. Was leary about him being a little boy, but, he's wonderful!! :)

We have a 9 year old cat, Furball. My husband got her from his co-worker who couldn't keep her, so she came with that name, we didn't name her. She only weighs 6 pounds and is really well behaved.

I also have 2 grand-ferrets, as they are my son's. Ferrets are really fun animals to watch and play with. They are a bundle of energy.

I have a funny story about ferrets. When my girls were ages 2 and 3 we lived in a duples. The people next door had two pet ferrets. Well one night when hubby and i were wathcing tv one of the girls let out a blood curdling scream. I of course jumped up and I dont thing my feet touched the floor until i reached their room. Well the 2 year old was pointing to her sisters bed screaming "MONSTER MONSTER MOMMA MONSTER!!!!" I looked under the bed and all you see are two sets of glowing eyes! Well I grabbed uo both girls and ran out of the room. All I was thinking was rodent (overwheliming fear there). Hubby went in and the neighbors two ferrets found a way into our garage and came into the house through our pet door! He grabbed them up and took them home. After the girls calmed down and were tucked back in bed we had a great laugh about the whole thing and how now we will have the hardest time convincing them monsters under the bed dont exist! The girls are now 10 and 11 and they still mention it.

We share our lives with 2 cats & 1 dog, dear things: Angel, the darling little klepto always on the lookout for something to steal; Ariel, who thinks she's a dog; and Payton who is a sweet, silly, soft-hearted clown of a pitbull. They all compete to be therapy critters if one of their humans should be unwell or unhappy. They all get along beautifully. They are all rescues. Payton was adopted from a rescue group. They rescued her from a 16-year-old girl who was hiding that darling pup from her parents. In a cooler. In her closet.

I have 6 guinea pigs. A mom, dad, and their babies. We are not breeders, but didn't realize we had 2 different genders! Now all the guinea pigs are separated. It's a hassle, but it's hard to tell 3 kids, "We can't keep them." :D

We have two dogs. They are both a lab mix; in fact, they are sisters who are litter mates. We had planned on only getting one, but the other one stole my heart as well, so now we have two! I was never much of a pet lover until we got these dogs (I didn't want my kids to grow up resenting me because I was one of those parents who didn't allow pets). Now, I can't imagine my life without them. I feel like I have four kids now instead of two. :)

I also have a mini lop earred bunny named Skitzo (Skitz) and she definatly lives up to her name! :)

We have Tucker who is part Yellow Lab, Part Blue Heeler, and I swear part MOOSE lol He is 5 years old, 81 lbs and spoiled rotten lol He was adopted from our local animal shelter. Most times he is to smart for my own good lol His only issue is that he is scared to death of thunder storms to the point that if we know bad storms are coming we give him a pill to calm him down or we put him in his crate:(
Anyone else have a fur kid with this problem?

Oh and I almost forgot we have 4 adult male cats 2 mommas and right now 9 babies! the adults are all wild and have been dumped here by strangers( I live at the end of a gravel road and this happens a lot) and I have this habit of feeding everything within a 100 mile area lol

Back in December I had to put down my animal soul mate.. Dakota.. a beautiful green eyed gray cat who was born right here in my house 15 years ago. His cat momma was also a stray but one day I opened the front door and she ran in and went under my couch and by the time I got her out she had 1 kitten! She had a total of 3.. Dakota being the last and he kinda got stuck and I had to help them out a bit. That day he was born into my hands and was my heart from then on.The day I had to have him put down was the worst day of my life but our vet is very kind and let me hold my baby in my arms till the very end . I miss him more than words could ever say and even as I sit here typing this I am starting to cry
Time to go now

How precious our animals are to us, they fill our hearts and our souls and give nothing but love, I love my dog Angie so much, I would kill for her, your story brought tears to my eyes too, we had another dog prior to the one we have now, we had him for 13 years, so I know how hard it is to let them go, they are truly apart of our family, bless your dear Dakota, one day we will meet our dear pets again.

Yes! One of my dogs is afraid of thunderstorms. She can hear them coming before we do. She starts panting heavily, and she stays glued to my side! I feel so badly for her, but don't know what to do to comfort her.

My mom has a pekingese who is also afraid of thunderstorms. If one comes in the middle of the night, either she or her husband has to sleep in a recliner with the dog on their lap! LOL!

I am sorry about your kitty! Carol is absolutely right about pets. They really do bring love, laughter, and joy into our lives. I love my dogs so much, and can't imagine life without them. I know the time will come when I will have to say goodbye, but I just try not to think about that right now!

It's good of you to feed all the barn cats. :)

Yeah our dog does that! You can see for miles to the west actually from any direction but the dog sees it in the horizon and starts barking. Hes an outside dog he sits in the rain and barks. No matter what time of the day or night! If I lived in town our dog would have the local pd showing up all the time.

I am addicted to the Dog Whisperer series and I think the man is simply amazing so I decided to check out his web site to see if I could find anything there to help Tucker out with his Thunderstorm problem. I couldnt find a thing until I looked at his future episodes listings. He is accepting submissions for future tapings and the first thing listed there is dogs scared of storms and fireworks. I was so excited until I found out Im not in any of the areas he is lookin in lol.. just my luck! Anyway maybe if any of you have dogs with this same problem and are in his requested area you can send in a tape for it! I have never posted a link here before so I hope I do this right....

and I wanted to thank you all for your kind words for my Dakota. My husband and I have no human babies so our dakota and Tucker and the whole buch of everybody are our kids and mean the world to us

We had our Rottweiler, Sampson since he was 2 months old. We had to put him down this past Feburary due to bone cancer...he was 13!! I had him before I had kids. 2 years prior of Sampson getting sick, little miss Sasha comes into our life. She too is a Rottweiler. She's almost 4 now. Missing Sampson so much just makes me love Sasha more and more each day.

I have a mutt. My dog is mixed with a Chihuahua and Tibetan Spaniel. I was told the dog would not be over 15 lbs. Almost two years later and the dog is 22 lbs. I was also told the dog would be as dumb as a chihuahua and be hard to teach. My dog does a ton of tricks well not a ton but about 21 tricks. And we are still working on more. Now if i could get the dog to stay out of the trash i would be good .. oh and off the table... and out of my flower bed... lol
I love my dog :)
I also have 5 stray cats that i have fixed so they wont have any more babies. They are all outside cats.(i live out in the country) (too many people just drop animals off and let them fend for themselves)
Well one thinks it is an inside cat.
Dogs name is pebbles ( who also love to get a fourwheeler ride)
Cats are - big momma, tiger-ific, Roo, pooper kitty, and ozzy

Oh I feed the birds and squirrels too, I love to do that, we have some really neat birds here, some that make there way here only once in a great while, and of course the usual birds for this region, I love the hummingbirds, and the Robins, those are my favorites, but then I have a Flicker who owns the suet and pecks on the fireplace and wakes us up...

I have 10 cats. yeah I know, right! Cool thing is we have them outside on our back screened in porch and we have a way for them to go in a tunnel and outside into our back fence. We recently got one of those Cat Fence-In things and they honestly cannot jump the fence. It is soooo cool. My mom on the other hand has 2 little monkeys. I cannot stand them though because they jump at me. Once, the oldest monkey bit my toe. I have disliked them since. ha

We have a one year old field spaniel which was a birthday gift for my son. His name is Chance and he is the most protective dog you will ever meet. He gaurds us every second of everyday. Last week my two younger kids were playing in the back with the dogs and the meter reader let himself into the gate. I heard screaming (from my daughter) and the dogs barking like mad. I ran to the door and saw that Chance had backed the kids into a corner of the fence and he was growling at the reader. It was something to see! We also have a seven year old black lab chow mix. He is a sweetheart! I had heard Chows weren't good with kids but this "moose" is a lover. His name is Shadow. We also have a eighteen year old African Grey named Domini. We took her in after my great Aunt passed away. She has a huge vocabulary and can mimic any sound she hears. Domini is ALOT OF WORK but we wouldn't trade her for anything. We really need to watch her when the kids have their friends over because I'm worried for everyones safety. Domini only likes who she likes and has no problem telling you if she doesn't! Love my pets but it is such a hassle when we have to travel. I worry if the pets are okay most of the trip.

What do you do with them? Last time we went on a trip, we took our dogs with us, but it was a pain! We drove, and it took us 25 hours each way. We had two dogs, two kids, and two adults, all packed into my little Jeep Liberty! I'd bought a soft-sided car top carrier, but the straps on the darn thing broke 50 miles into our trip. We ended up throwing all the luggage in the back, covering it with the car carrier, and throwing our coats on top for the dogs. The dogs and kids behaved wonderfully, so even though it wasn't the most fun thing in the world, it could have been a lot worse! I really don't want a repeat performance though.

Good thing the kids and dogs behaved and everyone made the best out of a tight situation!

Thank goodness for my mother in law. She is retired and can come to our home to " pet sit ". She has a friend in the area and lots of beautiful walking trails to keep her busy. My dogs like her and my African Grey tolerates her. MY mother in law is not afraid of our bird so that helps. Birds can be super tempermental and become stressed if they aren't happy. I checked into boarding our bird at the closest bird hospital which is 40 miles away and they wanted $ 30 a day! I thought that was too high. We are getting ready to go out of town next week and I am going today to stock up on food, chew toys and some goodies for my mother in law!

My cousin had an African Grey years ago that was a real stinker, we were having a baby shower and he felt like he had to be the center of attention, walking on the floor like a person, lol and then he sat on the coffee table just watching all the action.
My cousins husbands name is Ralph and that bird would yell at him if he went into the bathroom, RALPH, RALPH, until he would answer, the bird spoke very well and one time the police were called because they heard the bird yelling.... they thought someone was being killed in there, lol they are a handful!

My Aunt had all kinds of stands for Domini to play and stand on and a huge cage. When I am home, she stands or plays on top of her cage on a perch. We are lucky to have a sunroom off the kitchen, so her cage and toys are in there. She knows that when I pick up my purse and keys, its time to go into her cage. Then she will start with "Mama be right back, be a good bird girl". We keep her wings clipped so she can't fly for her safety. Domini is really attatched to me and gets upset when I leave so we try to do the same routine everytime we leave the house. She is brilliant, learns my kids weekly spelling words before they do!!!

I know! Do you your dogs like the car? My dogs lay up against the door to see who can be the first one out to the car. I wish it wasn't so hot out so I could take them everywhere.

My husband was bored last night so he decided tho take my Chow in the back yard and shave him down with my clippers. Shadow loved it, sat perfectly still. Now that its morning and I can really get a good look at him...lets just say he has had better haircuts. Oh well, it will grow back in a matter of weeks. Do you get your dogs professionally groomed or do you do it yourself?

They don't mind the car, but they like going for walks even better. The minute we pull their leashes out, they go nuts!

Ah well, at least Shadow will be much cooler! Our dogs are low-maintenance in the grooming department, so we just clean them ourselves. I have been thinking about taking them to a place here called Sloppy Dog Wash:

But I've just never gotten around to it. It's on the other side of town, which is why.

We have 3 cats, a pitbull we rescued from the pound, and a saltwater fish tank with only one fish left in it. We had a bunch in there until my 5 year old dumped a whole can of cashews in the tank. He told me he thought they deserved a nice snack..lol I thought it was pretty funny but hubby was kinda mad since saltwater fish are pretty expensive. He was frantic trying to get the fish out of the tank and into clean saltwater..he managed to save the one we still have (clown fish like Nemo), but the rest went to fishy heaven.
I used to feed a possum every night on my front porch. My kids named him Petey, but he stopped coming when we got the dog. She scares away anything that comes on our property. I love my dog but I miss Petey. :(

Goodness - I used to have a salt water tanks - absolutely loved it - by VERY expensive to keep up and maintain....and then yes, there were the mornings I would get up and all the fish would be RIP! After about 6 years, I tore it down. I won't do another one unless we get a tank above 100 gallons!

2 cats; Cleo 2yrs, Wednesday 13 weeks.
2 turtles; they are about 4 years, named her and him
1 snake; Azerale 1yr she is a corn snake
1 leopard Gecko; Fester 6 yrs (i used to have a family of five and they all died within a month time, so at one time I had 6)
1 hedgehog; Aiden he will be 1yr next month.

Last November, my life and my love Furball (a male persian cat) died when he was 13yrs. My uncle gave him to me when we was 5yrs, he got him from the pound. We have no clue why someone would want to give him up. He was so clam and loved to be brushed. I also had a newt (which are very hard to keep) and 4 white tree frogs (while I was between place they stayed at my friends house and all died after a week of getting them back. I will never do that again) But I will be getting more next month (moving into a big house.) My Future husband and I love animals, they are our life.

She's a "prissy pants" with an attitude. I had a big male (85 pounds and 34" at the top of his head), but he died of cancer in 2005. He, too, was black and white. :)

I call my dog a watch dog too, she only barks maybe once a day if that, but when she does she sounds like a big dog. We had a cat, Toonces, and then adopted two dogs, Lucas and Copper. The cat was MAD at us for allowing them in the house. Toonces was definately the "alpha dog" of the pack. At one point, she decided she liked their food better than her own, all three of them would actually eat from the same bowl at the same time.

Unfortunately, we had to put our beagle, Copper, down about four years ago. Then Lucas and Toonces had to be put down two years ago within a month of each other. Now my only pets are my husband and two kids.

I have 2 dogs, Blue (Bluey) is an australian Cattle dog-otherwise known as blue healer. He turned 1 yr old on December 1st. He's soooo cute, and so fun. I think he has ADD. He has only ONE thing on his mid all the time. Throw the ball....throw the ball....throw the ball. I could go on and on talking about how lovable he is and he does some cute stuff.
Jake (Jakey) is our 7 yr old Yellow Lab. He has put us through h e l l and back many many times with all his crazy antics. He went awol for about a month back in August soon after we moved to TN. I went nuts posting flyers, and making phone calls etc. I even went so far as adopting another puppy to keep Blue company. BUT, we got him back. He's been with the family a long time, and brought each and every one of us through some good & bad times over the years. He's been a pain in the butt since he's been back...making trails....trying to lead the other dogs off...and barking at every single noise. And chases the neighbors cows in the pasture behind us.
He's cool though...we enjoy him and he is alot of fun too! He is very loyal, and smart. & LOVES to swim in our pond.
The puppy we adopted was adorable. another blue healer. She (sissy) was very sweet, but needed alot of attention that we just couldn't give her (training etc) so we found her a real good family with young children to grow up with. I hope she is happy.

I have two dogs and one cat. Jazzie (I like jazz music) is a 5yr old rescued dog. She is part lab/rott. Kojak (I just liked the name) is 2 1/2. He is part Lab/shep. And then there is Sinatra, my 6 yr old male siamese cat who is psychotic as all get out. He hates everyone but me and hubby is terrified of him. They are all indoor animals and somehow manage at least most of the time to coexist peacefully. They are spoiled rotten. I gave up the dream of having new living room furniture a long time ago...they do not know the meaning of laying on the floor. So old furniture it is...that is the price I am more than willing to pay for their undying love and companionship. All three sleep with us and we only have a full size bed. But I am never cold. Oh, the most important thing...they all are spayed or neutered.

I know exactly what you mean! I had never been an animal lover, but I didn't want my kids to grow up and resent me for not letting them have a dog. I finally agreed to it, and I cannot imagine my life without my doggies. They are like my children! And now, I have an affinity for all animals. Amazing how you can change so late in life!

I don't know how old Princess is, I've had her going on 3 years though and she's relatively gentle. I've never had her spit at anybody, once I get her on a lead she'll go wherever I go but she'd rather be left to roam the yard. She's in with the goats for the winter, we've had so much snow I can't close the front gate. She's brown and white. She's better than a watch dog, making her alarm noise sounds like a car grinding over but never starting.

ha i know baby is really soft. he used to be a fluff ball! this is when peanut was cute and didnt bite people. he still peed in the house but we had puppy pads down then. you should see the video of where peanut is under a box and baby is trying to eat the box. haha.

Lynne... my sister used to breed c0catiels. She said you will need a male to fertilize the egg. If it isn't fertilized, nothing will happen, and the egg will rot. If you don't have a male she said to take the egg away from her before she becomes too possessive over it. :(

There are 3 eggs now! They are sitting on them off and on, mostly the male, Sammy. He's so funny when he's protective! lol So, I sing him the only 2 lines of "Blue Moon" that I know and he relaxes and falls asleep. I googled my birds, Allison! LOL So, I put a bowl of water in the cage. It says that they birds will wet their bellies in order to keep the eggs moist. I sure hope something hatches. Not because I need another bird, but it sure would be cool to be there for. :)

I love corgis! I have a corgi mix and he has such a funny personality. Our other dog won't stop getting in our shower. He LOVES hot water for some reason, and when I get in the shower if I don't close the door til it clicks (it is kinda messed up) then he will push it open and jump in!!! He had gotten sick... he would not be able to move like before and he lost appetite... he would cry if you tried to hold him.. he was just in pain and you could see it in his face that he just wanted to rest forever already.. It seems to me that a neighbor kicked him so hard it messed up his insides. Our dogs don't like the neighbors because they are evil, and now they have a bigger reason to hate them.

I had been in Oregon last week and came back yesterday... I saw him and he was happy to see me I guess to say goodbye because he was walking and eating a little more than usual... Now I am happy in a way that he is not suffering anymore.

I am so sorry to hear all of this. I hate lossing a pet. Just think it is better that he is not suffering. I can't believe a neighbor would do that. I would definately let the police know. That is not right at all. Plus you don't want them doing that to another animal! I am glad that you are looking on the bright side though that he is in a better place. So sorry to hear this. Cowfish are the best fish EVER!! I used to have one and it was so cool. He was such a loving fish too. It is weird to say that but they truely are. They follow you around the tank and constantly want to see you. They are wonderful. I am looking for a picture of him now, so I will post it in a few minutes if I can find it. I miss him dearly:(

Those are cool! Are they saltwater?

Ya they are. I was going to school for Marine Biology (dang government wont give research money to anyone anymore so I changed my major). These little guys, when they die, you have to get them out of the tank within about an hour because they have venom inside and when they die, after awhile they release it and it will kill all the fish around them! They are just so sweet though. They have great personalities too! He loved playing with my eel. It was funny. He would get the eel's food in his mouth, swim by the eel, and then spit it at him. It was so funny. I miss my salt water tank. My parents are moving so I had to take it down and take the fish to the fish store.:(

We have 1 black lab retreiver mix,3 pekin ducks,1indian runner duck and 1 mallard hen that adopted us when she was run over by a bus at approx 1 wk old.:)

We just had to put our much loved lab to sleep. He was almost 17 yrs ol and had severe arthritis and was having seizures and was starting to sleep al day. The night before we had to bring him in he came in and laided on the foot of the bed and slept there. This has not happened since we moved to this house. Over a year and a half ago. He slept all the time and was in pain alot. We think we did the right thing and helped him move on. We will not be getting a new dog for awhile unless we happen to be blessed w/ another one the same way we got him. Given to us because the owners were going to put him down because they were moving and did not want him any longer. We had him for ove 11 years. Those were very good years. He grew up w/ our youngest son who is now 12.

Thank you for letting me tell you about him. He will be much missed.

I'm so sorry about your lab. It is so hard having to do that, even if it is in the animal's best interest. You did the right thing, he will have no more pain. He was blessed to have found you're family. You and your family will be in my prayers.

We have 2 dogs, both rescued from an animal shelter about 4 years ago, both about 6 years old now. Charlie is part Bearded Collie & part ?? - he's very smart, very mellow, very loving......... Mandy is an Airedale Terrier - she's not too smart, she's obsessive about chasing squirrels & other small critters, but she's very sweet.

My dog is a rescue dog also, she is the best dog in the world. I swear she does not have one bad habit!

Here is something cute she does, when I put eye drops in DH eyes I tell her she is next, so she sits right next to DH's head on the back of the couch watching and waiting. I put the cap on the drops and tell her ok your turn, sit still, and I pretend to put drops in her eyes, then I rub each eye gently. She thinks she is getting drops and is so fisky after I do that, then it's squeeker time...

Dogs are just great animals!!

I have two boxers one, I've had since a puppy and the other is a foster flunkie. I got her in as a foster and I "flunked" I had her for one night and couldn't let her go. She was so thin & had so many problems (fear, food agression, separation anxiety, etc.) she had been tied up & beat in a backyard. Oliver & Susie are there names & we belong to a few boxer message boards and meetups.

Currently, I also have two foster pug puppies that, I've had for the last 7 weeks. As much as, I love them, I'm ready for them to go - I miss my 8 hours of sleep and am tired of non potty trained puppies!

Me and my dbf also have 2 boxers!! That's so sad about the one foster puppy. I'm glad you took her in and taking good care of her! Was the seperating anxiety from just being taken away from it's mother or from being taken away from it's siblings too?

Aren't they the best breed ever! I'm addicted to boxer message boards :D

No, her seperation anxiety started when, I took her in. She "knew" she had found a new loving home that loved her like she should be loved. Her story really is so sad & it angers me still 2.5 years later. I can't stand what people do to animals! So now, if, I'm out of her site she gets real bad anxiety. Having two helps with that some though- they don't get lonely though most of my work, I'm able to do from home so she's not by herself often!

Yes, they are the best!! I can hardly put into words how special of dogs they are!

I can't stand how cruel people can be with animals either... I would love to be a vet or something, but I just can't take seeing all the hurt animals, it breaks my heart.
The 2 boxers we have are brothers and have never been seperated since birth, so I know that if they were to ever be seperated, they wouldn't make it long, or their personalities would definitely change and they wouldn't be the same... they depend so much on each other. So I can imagine how your two are together!

yeah I miss my rottie. He was so great with kids and when my golden was a pup he put up with a lot from him. Maybe some day we will get another one. The only problem with him was that he thought he was a lap dog and he would climb up on everyone's lap and smoosh them.
