Has anyone been affected by the pet food recall? (as in have you had a pet to die because of tainted food?) What are you now feeding your pets? This whole ordeal scares me - I never know if what I am feeding my puppy is going to hurt her or not. Any suggestions on what to feed her?

It is pretty scary! I buy the store brand from Sam's Club. Fortunately, none of it was affected. Even some of the more expensive brands were tainted, so price had nothing to do with it. All any of us can do is just hope for the best when we buy certain products. America still has the safest food supply in the world, if that's any consolation.

It is just so scary when you think that your pet is so trusting and then the food you give it can kill 'em. I think of my Dashund, Chloe, like family and I would not want anything to happen to her!

None of my dogs were ever affected by it. We have four dogs and a pot-bellied pig whose diet also includes dog food. We were using "Kibbles and Bits" made by Del Monte, but now even that has managed to get mentioned on the recall list. It's ridiculous at this point- more brands were added to the list yesterday, and all this talk of "cross-contamination", etc. Now the news says "Dog & Cat Owners Urged to Use US Sourced Food Only" (http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_272613137.shtml). We have a mile-long list of what not to feed the pets- how about a list of "U.S Sourced" food that we CAN feed them?
I guess a lot of people have resorted to "home made" meals for their pets, but with four dogs (3 large and 1 small), plus the pig... it just isn't an option here. Imagine me trying to cook ahead of time, enough chicken and rice to feed these four "mooses" plus the little one, every week? I mean I go through a 50lb bag of dog food a week- where am I going to store 50lbs of cooked chicken and rice? It's just crazy and I hope they get to the bottom of all this soon- it's a constant source of worry for me.

We feed our basset hound, Shorty, Bil Jac Large Breed. FYI, none of the Bil Jac products have been involved in the pet food recall - I trust the Bil Jac company 100%. We have to buy it from PetsMart and it's a little more expensive, but it's worth it for our dog. Shorty has a lot of skin allergies, a sensitive stomach and arthritis in his two front legs and he does best on Bil Jac. We love Bil Jac because they only use organ meat and they don't add any wheat gluten meal, or any other gluten meals, to their formulas. Their primary source of protein nutrition is fresh meat. Also, the Large Breed formul has Glucosamine and Chondroitin that help with Shorty's arthritis.
We actually tried switching Shorty to a food that we thought would be better, Blue Buffalo, but he wouldn't eat it - and this is a dog that is ALWAYS hungry. We would put food in his bowl at 6:00 in the morning, and he wouldn't eat it until 7:00 or 8:00 at night. We switched back to Bil Jac and he scarfed the food right down. We will never switch again.
Here's a link to their site: http://www.biljac.com/

After this came out I resorted to being one of those that nows cooks for my dogs.
Seems lately so many things are coming up tainted it is depressing. If I had fed my dogs the tainted food and killed them I would have a hard time dealing with that, they are almost as close as my kid and definently family.
Their Vet gave me a recipe that makes quite a bit at a time and can be refrigerated over several days. Glad they are both little dogs, I feel for you Rainsong.
