You can cook almost anything in a crockpot, I love to cook a Pork Butt in it, but I have used it for Swiss Steak, Chicken, Beef Roasts, and so on, and the new crockpot liners make cleanup a breeze, but of course they do clean up good because they are make of stoneware I believe. Have fun with it, and try new things to make, you cannot ruin a meal with it! ;)

I make beef stew in my crockpot. I use a couple pounds of stew meat roll the pieces in flour and brown in a skillet then add them into a crockpot adding a 1 lb. bag of baby carrots some new potatoes or a few cut up potatoes, then add enough water to cover all ingredients and add seasoning..... I cheat and buy prepacked beef stew seasoning and add a couple of those, but feel free to add what seasoning you want. If you have it on low you can leave it cook all day.

Another similar thing I do is take a beef roast brown it with no flour then add potatoes, carrots, and onions and throw it in the crockpot....yummy

Really the possibilites are endless, I use my crockpot a lot during the summer so we dont heat up the house with the stove....good luck.

Yes, I too have made stew in the crockpot, and yes, I use the Lawery's package seasoning mix, it is sooo good, I also make a quick Chicken Caccatorie, just put in the chicken peices you want, atleast 6-8 peices of Chicken and 1 jar of your favorite bottled pasta sauce, cook all day on low and then just make some pasta and serve the chicken and sauce, good with a nice green salad and french bread.........and yes you can doctor up the pasta sauce anyway you want, you can add mushrooms, onions, etc. the chicken comes out so tender!

Ok, I dont feel so bad for loving food as much as I do knowing I am not the only one lol. I love my slowcooker! I had one years ago that was HUGE with the removable crock, hubby at the time broke it! I actually mourned for my crockpot and the hubby is now an ex! LOL. New hubby just replaced it and I use it at leaste 4 times a week. I dont really use recipes however. I just kinda throw what ever I have into it and let it cook. I tried to make chicken and rice soup once and ended up putting in too much rice and it was more like chicken and rice stew. IT was soooo good, my pickest eater had seconds.

I didn't get a chance to ask my mother about the chicken and dressing recipe but I will....

I am hungry...I was out all day today - I should have threw something in the crockpot and had dinner ready when I got home....huh?

i use my crock pot about 2-3 times pr. mo. the easiest recipe i know is....2-4 lb. chuck roast on bottom, 1 pkg. dry onion soup mix on top & 1 can cream of mushroom soup w/ 1/2 a can of water. hi 6 hrs or low 8 hrs. u can brown meat 1st...i don't. also u can add a small can or 2 of mushrooms (i do). skim off as much fat after cooking & just stir. u have ur gravy already made for u. also look in the start sampling recipe archives for more recipes. i posted another one called western pork ribs. i do nothing but easy recipes! (being basicly a lazy person!!)

I like to go the more simple route. I will throw in some meatballs (or cook hamburger patties) with chili sauce or BBQ sauce and leave it. So at dinner time I will only have to bake the patotes... The easier the better..:p

I'm new to crock pot cooking, and I would love to know how to adapt oven recipes (casseroles, etc.) to work in that format. Does anyone have any tips? How do you know what temperature to put it at and for how long? Thanks!!

You can make almost anything in a crockpot that you would normally make in the oven, first look at the user guide that comes with the crockpot, read the recipes that come with it, see how much liquid you should add and then apply it to your own recipes, you won't lose much moisture from your crockpot, but do not open the lid to stir or look at the food, you will lose heat/steam and that will add time to your cooking, give it a try with a simple recipe first, so you get the feel of the crockpot and how it cooks, you cannot really ruin anything, atleast that has been my experience, once you try you will love it! you can do it!!!

My mom made chipped ham bbq in hers. I CANT cook and I can make it.
this is what you need:
1 pound shaved ham (the cheaper the better And you cant shave it to thin)from the deli (about $3.99 in VA)
1 bottle your favorite bbq sauce
put them in the crock pot cook till whenever longer the better
12 hamburger buns
ENJOY
does not get any easier than this. My friends love it in fact I don’t know one person who hasn’t liked it. I’m originally from Pittsburgh, PA and there it’s called Chipped Ham BBQ anyone out there from the Burgh Holla for ham BBQ.
Give it a try let me know what you think?? Amy:p

We have a big 8 quart crockpot and love it! Unfortunately, it's too big to use those Reynold's liners in. Between two of us, and depending on what we make, we usually have enough food to cover 2 meals during the week and then I freeze the rest in separate containers for another 2-3 meals. I'm the type of person that just doesn't like to cook something unless I'm going to have leftovers (don't call me lazy - call me resourceful - LOL). It works out good when you're tired and don't feel like cooking - you can just pull something out of the freezer and warm it up.

Here are some of things we make in our crockpot:

Chili
Swiss Steak
Corned Beef & Cabbage
7-Bone Roast
Beef Stew
Swiss Chicken & Stuffing

We haven't used our crockpot in a while. I think we need to pull it out and start using it more, especially since it's getting so warm now. There's nothing like coming home to a wonderful smelling kitchen and having dinner already done!

I sometimes put about 12 frozen chicken legs in the crockpot and pour a couple of bottles of BBQ sauce over them and let them cook all day~ By 5 pm you have a crock full of BBQ chicken!

I love my crockpot I bought several yrs ago. Mine is only 3 qts, wish at the time I bought it they had the bigger ones they do now. Anyways I usually cook soups for my husband and I. Then we usually freeze leftovers. But we have made a spicy mexican or southeastern (not sure which one) macroni and cheese. Of course growing up in the midwest, even though I am here now in Virigina I occasionally make the Lil' Smokies. My husband at first didn't want to try them, growin up in california he didnt know exactly what it was. but know he loves it. :)

I love my Crockpot! It uses less electricity than your oven so double bonus! I make this recipe all the time and it's easily modified to your taste:

Pulled Pork (this is modified from Tyler Florence's recipe)

Dry Rub:
3 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon dry mustard (sometimes I use prepared mustard and just make a paste rather than a rub)
2 tablespoon salt

1 (5 to 7 pound) pork roast (I normally get what's on sale)

Cider-Vinegar Barbecue Sauce:
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup yellow or brown mustard
1 cup ketchup
1/3-1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 garlic cloves, smashed
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Pan drippings from the pork

Mix the paprika, garlic power, brown sugar, dry mustard, and salt together in a bowl. Rub the spice blend all over the pork. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight.

Place Pork in Crockpot and cook either 4 hrs at high or 8 hrs on low (I prefer 8 hrs low)basically until it's either falling apart or tender enough to shred.

In the meantime mix your sauce ingredients in a bowl (I use same bowl I mixed spices in and just store in fridge until I'm ready to save on washing dishes).

Remove the meat from Crockpot, rest, then shred with 2 forks and remove bones and excess pieces of solid fat. Add back to Crockpot, pour on the sauce, and enjoy!

FYI: The juice that comes out of the meat is a lot so you may need to remove any excess and can use for another meal. Normally if it's not to soupy I just leave the extra juice in with the meat and add the sauce to all. Just use your best judgement.

Here's the link to the "original" recipe that Tyler Florence does--I used his recipe as a base and just adjusted it for my family. He bakes his in the oven so may suit your family better:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_27406,00.html?rsrc=search

PLEASE NOTE: his recipe calls for way more vinegar and mustard being a Southern recipe. I'm a Yank so I like a more ketchup based bbq sauce.

I have worked in and managed food service operations for over 20 years. In my state managers are required to hold a serve safe food cerificate. All other employees must attend a basic sanitation class.I have taken this class many times to keep my certificate current.

One of things I learned is crock pot cooking is not an approved form of cooking. You can hold (145 dg.)in them but no cooking allowed. This health dept. rule could possibly be different in other places. I'm sure it has to do with food being up to a certain temp in so much time . Most people get the food hot enough to kill any bacteria that may have been present.I just won't take that chance.I am kinda strange since I've been through so many classes I'm very picky when it comes to dining out.How food is handled in general.I know a lot about food borne illnesses and the problems that can arise from improper food handling.
I'm sad to say I don't even own a crockpot. I have used them many times to hold food for service they work great!

I actually only cook my Pork Butt in the oven...I just rise it, place it in a foil lined pan, with a rack and pour a little oil and Emeril's Original Seasoning all over, cover and cook for 4 hours at 325 then uncover and cook another 2 hours, delish! This is Emeril's recipe....

Thanks for explaining, I was curious!

It's probably because it's not safe to keep food warming in them. I've been to potlucks that had food sitting in crockpots, and it was congealed or dry looking. To cook food that's going to be eaten immediately after it's done, it should be fine. The food bubbles and simmers in mine, so I know any germs lurking have to be dead.

You're not strange. I'd probably be very depressed if I'd taken some of those food handling classes!

I don't know how other food service managers are but I believe in a well run kitchen. For the last 4 1/2 years I managed a loose meat sandwich/icecream shop. My health inspection were perfect or near perfect.I was always so proud I would make copies and hang them up for the customers to see. The few violations I've had are simple like he drove by looked in the window and saw me make a sandwich with out a hat or hair net he had warned me twice so the third time he pulled a surprise inspection that was my only violation that day.I am bragging for a moment I had one of if not the cleanest restaurant in town and there was 53 at the time!

That's awesome, Debbie!

Have you ever heard of Exchange City? Exchange City is ran by Junior Achievement; it's a mini city that gives children the opportunity to run a city on their own.

http://www.exchangecityusa.com/Home/default.htm

My son's 5th grade class participated in Exchange City this past May, and I was an adult volunteer. I was in charge of the Snack Bar. No previous restaurant or food handling experience! I was shocked by how much work it is. Me & the kids worked our behineys off--we were literally running the entire 5 hours we were there. I have a whole new respect for the food service industry. It's hard work!

yes it is hard work! The Exchange city usa sounds really interesting.I will have to check out the web site. I just finished wth school a year ago and my daughter starts this season! I have another 12 + years to help in the snack bar.Luckily I like kids! Running places like ice cream shops you have to really like all ages.I work well with teens.

The ball park cook shack was my favorite we had some fairly young volunteers. It was a great way for kids to learn to count back change and feel a sense of responsibilty. Its great you & your son are getting involved working together.I still enjoy the chance to work with my sons.I look forward to holidays! :)

CROCK POT BARBQ CHICKEN

SERVES 6 -8 (change servings and units)

Ingredients
6-8 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 bottle your favorite barbecue sauce
Directions
1 Remove any excess skin or fat from chicken breasts.
2 Cut chicken into slices.
3 Place in a skillet and cook until the pink is gone.
4 Put cooked chicken in the crock pot and pour BBQ sauce over and mix.
5 Use as much or as little sauce as you like.
6 I usually just pour the whole bottle in there.
7 Cook on"low" for 6-8 hours or"high" for 3-5.
8 It tastes better when cooked longer.
9 The chicken really soaks up the sauce.
10 Serve with corn bread, fried tators& onions and a salad (for those of you who just HAVE to have something green).
11 YUM YUM.

As a bonus take your leftover beans add to food processor, with cumin, chilli powder, onion powder and garlic powder season salt to taste. Blend with a little of the left over liquid and PRESTO refried beans. We made them like this at Taco Johns.

ours also came with a small one to make dips in . havent used it yet.

I have that too.............the only problem w/the small one is you cannot control the temp..........so the dip gets really hot and sticks after a while...
have to keep stirring it.......
