Announced by the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) and the FDA--FAAN press release below:

WALNUT ALLERGY ALERT
August 30, 2007

Bella Cucina is recalling “Death by Chocolate” cookies due to undeclared
walnut.

The cookies were distributed in retail stores and gift shops throughout the
United States in California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of
Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia and in British Columbia, Canada.

The cookies are packaged in a 6-oz. bag with a sleeve label and a UPC code
of 19193 00020. The recalled cookies were made on June 14, 2007, or July 5,
2007, and have a three-month shelf life.

Consumers should contact the company at (678) 539-8400 for a refund or
replacement.

Yikes! Death By Chocolate cookies could be death by walnuts--some places just don't understand how serious food allergies are! It must be frustrating for you with all of those lamely labeled products out there now that say, "Processed in a facility that also handles tree nuts, peanuts, soy protein...BLAH, BLAH, BLAH." So many manufacturers put a blanket statement on their products to limit their liability. Easy for the manufacturer to print a blanket statement on everything they make, but hard for the consumer with specific food allergies to find something safe to eat. Some manufacturers make a real effort not to do this and to protect the consumers with food allergies, but others take the quick way out.
