I have been part of one a few years ago. I rec'd alot of coupons that I would not have been able to get here. I would cut out ALL the sunday coupons and put them in an envelope to save for the next month's coupon train. I would take out the coupons that I would use and send the others in the next coupon train. Sometimes I would have to put 2 stamps on my envelope b/c I had so many coupons. It was fun and I Knew I was helping someone out with coupons just as the person who sent their coupons to me was helping me. I would like to join one if one begins here!:o

Anyone can start a coupon train. You just have to get a few people to join you.
A coupon train consists of one conductor and generally four passengers. The conductor starts the train by mailing unwanted coupons on to the next passenger. The first passenger takes out the coupons that she wants and any that expire soon, then replaces them with coupons she has but doesn't want. The train makes its rounds to each person and then home to the conductor. The process then starts over again.
As a general rule, most trains contain 30 to 50 coupons. This number is the maximum amount that one stamp will mail. You are expected to post to your group when the train arrives at and departs from your home. Most coupon groups ask that you keep a train in your possession no longer than three days. You should replace as many coupons as you take out. Many groups do not allow coupons printed off the Internet because not everyone has stores that accept them. To be fair to all riders, the coupons that you take should be replaced by the same type. For example, pet for pet, grocery for grocery, cleaning for cleaning, and so on. All coupons that leave your possession should have at least two weeks until they expire. It is also a good idea to write the coupon group and train's name on the outside of the envelope. Many people belong to several coupon train groups, and this makes your envelope easily identifiable to the next passenger.
One of the best ways to find a coupon train group is by doing a Google search on the Web. Most groups will ask you to submit a little information about yourself, such as how long you have been couponing and if you belong to any other trading groups. This is a way for them to determine if you are a reliable rider. You can also start your own train by asking friends and family to join in.
There are many types of trains out there for you to consider. Many of the larger trading groups have their standard core of potluck trains. If you are looking for specific coupons, you can often select to be placed on a special train. Special trains contain specific items such as only baby, pet, or grocery coupons.

That would be nice. I am always throwing away coupons because I don't know very many people who uses them. I would love to swap instead of throwing them away!! Maybe we can work on something soon.

You can get many coupons--I don't get many either(in the paper)--but I get a lot in the mail. Just email different companies. Everytime I like a product I look on the package and get their website. They either have some already posted or you can use the contact us link and ask for them. There are also many sites you can print them from. Get on mailing lists when you sign up for samples too. About half of the samples I get send a coupon with it too. Just some ideas...:)

As conductor, I have no idea what I'm doing, LOL! I hate a lot of rigid rules, but as we go along, I do think we should figure out some guidelines. For instance, you should send the coupons along to the next person within a week. I am always open to suggestions.
Now I got some questions for ya guys. First of all, do you want everyone on the list to know your address, or would you rather just have the person who sends you coupons know it?
Second, do you want to limit the number of cars on this train? Right now, we have 14 people interested. I hate to shut people out, but if the train becomes too long, it'll be awhile before we get more coupons.
Do you want to limit the envelope to one ounce? I have postal scales, so I can help us figure out more postage if you want to go to two ounces or above.
My sis leaves tomorrow. :(

14 might already be too many--but we can try it--I don't mind going over 1 ounce--I'd rather have more to choose from--with 14 people , the train is only gonna stop at our house about 3 times a year, maybe 4 if people shove the train off fast--we should also post when the train gets to our house and when it leaves our house--now I forgot what else you wrote--duh:o --well this is a start--what do the rest of you think??--oh and I don't mind who has my address.
also--if more people get interested, there can be more trains--we just need to name them and they need to have their own thread--also train name should be on the envelope.

I will send the coupons out as quick as I get them and go through them to get what I will use and add the ones I have to add. Sometimes I amy even be able to get it back out the same day as I got it. Depends on how late I get home from work!
Anyhow, if we get a ton of coupons in the papers one Sunday that we are not going to use, we could send out another envelope and have more than one going to help each other out. How does that sound? I love to get mail and to save money.
I don't mind if someone else has my address. You guys are my friends and we are helping each other out. Plus then we can send Christmas cards! The ounce or more does not matter to me. Each of us will pay our own postage and I figure, the more coupons we have to pick from the bettter! Right? I do love "queens" ideas. Whatever you decide will be great. We appreciate you starting it.:D

I may split us up and do two.
I really appreciate you all being patient with me. My sister and brother-in-law have bought a house here for my brother-in-law's mother. They got a good deal on the house, but it needs a lot of work. My sister closed on the house Monday, and we've been running ever since. Today, we discovered a TON of crap in the attic. It was the BIGGEST mess. I can't believe some of the stuff we found. Bottles of 7 Up and club soda still sealed! Who would put brand-new, unopened bottles of soda in their attic??? I am amazed at the items we found that were still in new condition! We also found about 40 trophies someone had won for showing horses. It was kind of sad to throw them away, but we certainly don't want them! My sister and I spent five hours hauling crap from the garage to the dumpster, and there is a bunch of it still up there. Sigh! Then...get this. When we got home after busting a** all day, hubby and I discovered that our air conditioner had gone out. Sob!
Maybe I should have put this on the vent thread!

I replied to the conductor that I wanted to join. This would be a first experience for me though. So am I correct in thinking that I will get an envelope of coupons in the mail and sift through them. I would take the ones I want then replace the number I take with ones I have that I won't use then mail them to the next person on the train?
This would be so good for me to do! I live in an area that gives very few coupons in the paper so my Mother-in-law mails me hers, my sis-in-law, and Grandma's coupons. Sometimes I will have 3 of the same coupon. Although they are great coupons I may not budget to buy three of that item before the coupon would expire. I hate to throw them away so when I go grocery shopping I leave them in the section where that item is for someone else. My mother-in-law lives in a metro area where they get really good coupons too, lots of BOGO coupons!
Thanks for any guidance. By the way I don't care who has my address. I can usually mail out stuff the same day as I get them. I also don't care about postage.

Oh, I also like the idea of posting when the train leaves our house. Mabey we could set up our own coupon train blog to keep our posts seperate. Also if we all had a master list of the 'train stops' we could tell how many more houses the train had to stop at before it will get to ours. Just a thought!

I don't mind my address being listed either

Here is my 2 cents:
1. I don't think there should be a limit on the weight. I would much rather have more to choose from.
2. I definately think that there should be a time limit put on it. I really believe that 3 days is plenty of time. By the 3rd day the holder needs to be sending it out.
3. I agree with the listing of "hey I got the coupons today" and "I sent them to ***XX today"
4. I don't mind anyone here knowing my address. Otherwise it would be a total nightmare for the "conductor". This is supposed to be fun for everyone, and help us save money. We don't want it to be a job. Besides, if we always have to send it back to the conductor, then she gets stuck with a big postage bill. That wouldn't be fair.
5. I believe that if you take out 7 coupons, then you have to replace them. You have to put back at least the number you took. More is even better.
6. I also think that everyone should cull the expired coupons out. No sense in sending on coupons that are no good. Besides, with all of us, this really shouldn't be a problem.
7. Last, but not least, I think that we should break it up into groups if it gets too big. I don't know what too big is, but I think we need to come to a concensus.
What do you guys think of these guidelines? Any other suggestions or comments?

Okay, I think you have some good suggestions.
I don't think that she meant the we necessarily had to know everyones address in the train. We would technically only need the person we were to send to next. Of course, we would see the address of who they were coming from. There would be no need to send them back to her every time. That would waste a lot of time and also cost her unnecessarily (plus she would get coupons to go through way too often!:))
But again, it does not matter to me. I don't think the envelope should get too huge. And... someone mentioned replacing coupons with others of the same kind, ie. cereal for cereal, cleaning products for cleaning products. I really don't think we have to be picky. If we want to use something, take it, add what you have that you won't use and send it one.
I'm hoping that we won't be greedy and keep things we won't use. That would kind of defeat the purpose don't you think?
3 days sounds perfectly fine to me. With the exception of holidays, like if I would have gotten them on Friday, I would have been unable to get them back in the mail until Tuesday this week due to holiday plans and no mail on Monday.
It's a good idea to have a thread for each train. But remember we also have to ability to PM each other.
I don't know how big too big is, but someone said other trains have just been 7. How many do we have interested. It might benefit some to do specific trains, like if you are interested in coupons for kids, diapers and that kind of stuff, we could have a young mommy train. For those with more of an interest in food, you could have a grocery train. We could also have a eat out train for restaraunt type stuff. Think of all the things we could do and some might want to belong to more than one!
Just some suggestions and my thoughts since you asked. :o

I agree with you, replacing like item coupons wouldn't really be possible most of the time.
I also agree that on the holidays we would have to allow for an extra day or so.
As for the specific type of trains, I read it and thought it was a great idea. Then I thought about it again....the only problem that I see with having specific trains is that those with kids will want other coupons as well, for example. Also, as I have been cutting the coupons out, I have cut them ALL out. I would have to send out multiple times in order to seperate the coupons into the specific train. It could get to be quite a hassle. (Does that make sense? Not sure if I explained that clearly. lol)
Gals, (all of you), I must say, I think we make a great team! Don't you? Maybe we need to put our heads together and come up with something that will make us all wealthy too! hehehehehe:D

I don't really want to be on a specific train. While it probably works great for some, it would diminish what I have to offer. Having a variety of needs riding the train would seem to better ensure that there was something for everyone!!:)

Just a little note on my coupon clipping success.....
I went to Target tonight. I spent $178.94 before my coupons................after the 21 coupons, it was............are you ready..........
$105.18!!!!!!
I was soooooo excited. It was funny too. There was a single guy standing behind me. He got there just as she rang my total before the coupons and he just kept shaking his head as she took each coupon off my total. I thought he was angry because he had to wait so needless to say, I was getting a little irritated. Then she gave me the final total and he says to me: "Excuse me, but would you mind cutting coupons for me? No, wait, better yet, would you just meet me here next Tuesday at the same time and help me shop with the coupons you clip for me?"
We all had a good laugh.

Problem is, not everyone has sent me their name and address. I've PMed those of you who haven't, so please let me know your info ASAP. I'm planning on getting the train rolling on Monday, so I'd really like to have your address by then.
Liz has agreed to be a conductor too; thanks Liz! I will take the first 8 on the list, Liz will take the remaining 7. We will PM you the name and address of the person you are supposed to send coupons to. If your person changes, we will let you know.
It costs .75¢ to mail 3 ounces, so put your coupons in a #10 business-sized envelope and use two 41¢ stamps--that'll give us some leeway. It may not sound like it, but 3 ounces of coupons is a lot! I am cutting and sorting, but I still haven't gotten up to 3 ounces yet, LOL! When I do, I will count them and let you know how many coupons equals 3 ounces.
I think three days is a good turnaround time. You won't be yelled at if you can't mail them out in that time-frame, but please try to get them back out as quickly as possible. I also like the idea of posting when you get the coupons, and again when you mail them out. Also, please post who you are sending your coupons to (that will help the conductors keep track). I will set up sticky threads for both trains when the time comes.
We'll just take on any problems as they come. Let's try to have fun with this, okay?

I am so excited I can hardly wait to check my mail!! I bet I already have 10 or so coupons that I am ready to trade and I haven't even sorted through my coupon stash yet!
Sticky threads have been mentioned, can someone explain a sticky thread and how I do one.
Also Madame Rebate Queen, can you explain how you get good deals at walgreens. Do you combine the manufacturer coupons with Walgreens coupons? Also I have heard that CVS can be a good deal with some kind of CVS bucks? Can anyone explain that one?
Sorry I am so new at this. Not new at all to saving money though!

Walgreens puts out an all in one rebate book at the beginning of each month. They keep them in the display rack with the sale flyer. There will be 5-6 items that are completely free or if you have coupons you make money from them. The trick is, do not rush out and buy everything in the first week. Each week they will put some of the rebate items on sale. At the end of the month, I review what items still remain and decide if the rebate is still worth doing with no coupons or sales. yes, I do combine Walgreens coupons with regular coupons. They let you do that, and you can get some awesome deals too. They also do register rewards for certain products. For instance, buy $20 Dove products--get $10 register rewards. It prints it out right at the register to use like cash on your next visit. If you have coupons for those products, the savings really add up. Many times I have gotten $20 worth of products for $5. The register rewards coupons also get spit out for random other offers. I've gotten many things completely free. Then you send all the rebates in at one time on one form with one stamp. If you elect to get your rebate on a gift card--you get an extra 10% added also. You don't have to do proofs of purchase or anything. Just save your register receipts. Don't forget to check the clearance section. It is usually loaded!!

oh and a sticky has to be done by a mod--you can request it.
CVS I can't tell you much about--I don't keep up with them. I checked it out a little from time to time and it just didn't compare to Walgreens.

You can also check out the rebate catalog online too. I do this the first of each month before I actually go into Walgreen's so that I can start planning.

I'm still waiting to hear from a few more people. If I don't hear from them by Sunday, then they are off the train until I do hear from them. A couple of them still haven't given me their addresses, so there's really nothing I can do EXCEPT take them off.
Sticky threads and full guidelines soon, so please be patient. :)

I could always be a conductor for anyone after me. If we have late sign ups. Just a idea

You guys really are the best! I am going to try Walgreens this month. I just got my bi-monthly mailing from my Mother-In-Law for my coupons she sends me, over $4 postage in just coupons! I iwll have so much to pass down. Whoever it is after me is in for a treat!
I am really thankful for all of you guys suggestions and replies to my questions.
Are any of you savvy Black Friday shoppers? If so let me know and I will pass on a good web site for you. Mabey we can start a forum on that. I don't know how to do that stuff. It is getting to be that time to start researching the sales!

I know many of you have made suggestions for the coupon train, but I thought of another one as I was cutting out coupons this morning. It would be helpful to know if anyone on the train had dogs or cats, and if anyone had a baby or toddler at home. I have no pets or babies so I usually skip these coupons. I am happy to save them for the train, but it seems silly to mail them around if they are not needed. What do you think?

That is a good point. I have a dog so I use those type of coupons but no babies and no cats. I have been saving those type coupons though cause I figure we may have some cat or baby families. I guess my reply would mean there is a need for dog coupons. Anyone with a need for baby or cat stuff?

I went to Walgreens yesterday and did the rebate/coupon matching thing. I got $11 worth of product for $1.66 after my rebates!!!!! That figure includes sales tax. I am going to Walgreens again today with the current sales paper and also Rite Aide (used to be Eckerd). I don't remember anyone mentioning them but you can fill out the rebate stuff with them online and get a check back in 2-3 weeks.
The only think about these drug stores that I did notice is you really have to watch their prices. I got the Johnsons softwash at Walmart for free since it was $3.99 and I had the $4 coupon but at Walgreens it was almost $6. It pays to shop around I guess, even with rebates and coupons.

Yesterday, I did a mass delete in my PM inbox, and I believe I may have accidentally deleted some PMs that I hadn't answered yet. If you PMed me and I didn't respond, it wasn't on purpose! If you still have the PM in your sent folder, you can send it to me again. Sorry 'bout that.
I have dogs, but no babies or cats. Anyone else?
You do have to watch the prices at the drugstores. I usually only get rebate catalog stuff at Walgreen's. Although, sometimes they have some pretty good coupon or buy 1 get 1 free deals.
BTW, if you get your rebate back in the form of a Walgreen's gift card, they will add 10% to your rebate, which more than covers the sales tax (at least for me).

I have a dog and 5-month grandson, so I am constantly looking for baby coupons--especially Huggies, baby food, etc.

I have 2 cats and a big dog--no babies--:)
I would think we could use just about any coupon on this train.
If you all would like me to, I can watch for coupons that have been through a couple times(or one time) and pull them if we have no takers. I have a system in mind that I think might work.
and Walgreens again...I never buy anything at full price there, but you don't have to. It all ends up on sale or rebate at some point.
If I have good coupons like the Johnsons bodywash-- I wait til it's on sale or I'm already at a place with a good price.
I don't run from store to store though--I don't have time for that.
Something else I do is keep coupons in order of their expiration date(and in categories). Before I did that I was forever finding coupons that I had let expire because I forgot about them. It may sound time consuming but it actually saves a lot of time. About once a week, I add any new coupons. While I'm doing that it's easy to see which really good ones are getting ready to expire and to weed out the expired ones because they are right in the front. :)
