I have a friend who is a world known poet. I wanted to enter the same contest. I asked her about it and she said "Almost every one of those companies are a scam. Most of the time they don't even read your poetry. To them most of it is garbage! The few they do keep they rip them off and put someone elses name to it and there isn't a thing you can do!" PLEASE heed her warning to you and anyone who reads this!
I'm so sorry to have to have to have to tell you this. I know I was devistated at first. Her suggestion was to go back to school, refine my work and through school you'll find something or maybe you'll strike out on your own. But BE EDUCATED ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU DO!

Poetry.com is a SCAM!! The cash and item prizes are not real and everyone who enters wins thier original piece of work to be published in thier special edition poetry book. The catch, you have to buy the book and if you dont buy it your poem doesnt go in it.

I dabble in poetry from time to time and once entered one of these "contests". Just as indicated above my poem would be published if I bought a book. I did not buy the book but did have two or three poems published in a local newspaper and one in "Wing World" (A magazine for Gold Wing motorcycle riders). Yes, I was a motorcycle rider (my husband drove I rode) and loved every minute of it. Because of my husbands declining health we had to stop riding and we both miss it so much. The wind in your hair (even with a helmet) and bugs on your teeth is so exilirating!

Thanks for asking! This one was written a few years after I retired.

RETIREMENT
Now we were retired what would we do?
So much free time, we had not a clue.
We went tothe yard, made a garden plot,
Is this retirement? For us it was not!
We traveled here, there, near and far,
We drove mile after mile in the car.
We tried new hobbies and many a golf link.
Is this really retirement? What did we think?
Gardening and golfing were not our thing,
The we made a discovery -- a shiny, red Gold Wing!
We looked up former neighbors, our friendship to renew,
To our great surprise, they had a Gold Wing, too!
Business suits and high heels are gathering dust,
Now jean, leather jackets and boots are a must.
Wingers really don't need a reason to meet,
Just the fun of riding and some place to eat.
That we are retirees is really okay.
It matters not that our hair is gray.
The GOld Wing was a great choice there is no doubt.
We have so much fun just riding about.
If we get too old to ride on the bike,
We will just go out and get us a trike.

PS: A trike is a three wheel motorcycle.

I have a Christmas poem that I wrote for the child of a friend of mine. Would anyone be offended if I posted it close to Christmas?

What is good for one should be good for all....sure you can post it....they may want you to put it in the discussion area of the forum. More people would probably see it there anyway:)
