Grill Mate Utility Lighters
Full Product Description
This recall involves the following three types of Grill Mate utility lighters. The item number, UPC, and date of manufacturing ("Date of Mfg") can be found on the back of the product packaging.
Non-refillable Grill Mate utility lighter. This lighter has a yellow plastic handle. It can be identified by item number 014022 and UPC 062831140225. The date of manufacturing is 12/07.
Refillable Grill Mate utility lighter. This lighter has a burgundy plastic handle and a flexible metal shaft. It is red and black, and can be identified by item number 014018 and UPC 062831140188. The date of manufacturing is either 12/06 or 12/07.
Grill Mate Turbo Flame utility lighter. This lighter has a silver handle and can be identified by item number 014024 and UPC 062831140249. The date of manufacturing is 12/08.
Hazard Identified
Testing by Health Canada of the non-refillable and refillable Grill Mate utility lighters has revealed that these lighters pose a burn risk to users because they exhibit one or a combination of these hazards:
the flame is too high
the lighter exhibits an abnormal, sudden increase in flame height
the lighter continues to burn even after the trigger mechanism has been released
the lighters can leak fuel
the refillable lighter does not come with refuelling instructions that allow for safe refuelling of the product.
The Grill Mate Turbo Flame utility lighters do not have a child-resistant mechanism, which poses a burn hazard to children.
Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these lighters.

Corrective Action
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lighters and safely dispose of it.
Consumers may contact their municipality for instructions on how to dispose of the recalled product.
Number Sold
Approximately 6,912 of the non-refillable Grill Mate lighters and 24,288 of the refillable Grill Mate lighters were sold across Canada.
Approximately 1,200 of the recalled Grill Mate Turbo Flame lighters were sold at The Bay stores across Canada.
Time Period Sold
The recalled products were sold from January 2008 to August 2009.
Manufactured in Taiwan.
