I read that Thursday Aug.2, that Michelle Duggar from Discovery's The Duggar Family had her 17th child. Goodness. I have one and I decided that in labor that this was it!! I think it is great if she can afford it. They say they are debt free and seem to have plenty of money. I have been keeping up with them for a couple years now. What is your opinion?

somewhere, sometime, somebody on my mom's side of the family (so I am told) had 19 kids. And she outlived them all. I think it is wonderful that all her children are in good health. Seems like back when, women had so many babies to pass.....Like my grandma had 4 stillbirths and raised 7. I never want to imagine that.

I am impressed that they are able to live debt-free. That is amazing!
You can actually find a lot of nice clothes at thrift shops. I bought a pair of Calvin Klein jeans at a thrift shop for $1. Also, I bought my last little black dress at a thrift shop for $15. I'm posting a picture, but I don't think the picture does it justice. It has beading all around the collar and shoulder area. I love it!

Thank you, Carol. Yep, that's me! That picture was taken three years ago, right before my brother-in-law's retirement party from the Marine Corps. And, I found that dress (the perfect dress) at the first shop I went to. I got lucky! Actually, I bought it at a consignment shop, not a thrift shop, but they are along the same lines. The person who owned before me probably wore it once!

It is funny how we imagine how someone should look, lol anyways we have an abundance of thrift shops up here where I live, I never go to them, but now I am going to make it a point to stop in and see what they have, I have always donated to them, and looked a few times in the past, but hey this may give me something else to do, lol with all my time that I have! Maybe we should start a thread about thrift shops and the best item you ever got in one of them, sounds like that would be fun!

It is! I always get a picture in my mind of how I think someone looks, and I am always wrong! Okay, I am attaching a picture of me in "mom mode." It was taken with my best friend at Disneyland last year. Better? :)
I love browing thrift/consignment shops. A lot of time, I find nothing good. But, when I find something good, it's usually really good! I've even got my mom, who is the snob du jour, hooked!

I know with my husband's family of seven the older kids agree that they were the ones basically raising the sibs! It is not just financially being able to give, but how much does each child personally get? I feel sorry for the kids.

That's amazing! I read somthing that said that Michelle Duggar has been pregnant for a total of 10 1/2 years of her life! At least with that many kids they have a lot of help from the older ones.

I agree! Jim Bob (what a name!) looks pretty normal as do most of the boys, but Michelle needs a new hairdo and all the girls do look like they walked off the Little House on the Prairie set. I think it's pretty awesome that they are able to be so thrifty and live debt free though. It's also pretty cool that they built their own 7,000 square foot house.

What a pretty dress Mom! I know what you mean about finding good deals at thrift shops. A year or two ago my hubby and I went to the Goodwill close to our house and my hubby found 3 pair of Old Navy shorts (what he usually wears anyway) in his size and they looked brand new. I think we paid maybe $2 each for them. Not long ago I mentioned that he really needs some new shorts and Old Navy was having a sale and he just said - "I'll just go to Goodwill and get some more Old Navy shorts there for $2." I thought that was too funny! I had to explain that while he got really lucky finding that great deal that he won't always find things like that there, but it's definitely worth it to look.

Too funny! I agree! I read that once Michelle went into hard labor that it only took 30 minutes before the baby was born. I'm not surprised there - after having that many babies they should come pretty easily.

Thank you. Yes, we had a great time. I hadn't seen my friend for eight years, so it was good to catch up. The worst part was the crowds, and Pirates of the Caribbean was closed! Apparently, they were remodeling it to resemble the movie.

The Salvation Army Thrift Shop here has 1/2 price Wednesdays--all clothing is 50% off the price marked. I have been able to get some really awesome clothes, for dirt cheap!

I'm the youngest of 11 children, and the mother of one.
I think I can see it from both sides, the ups and the downs.
Pro: I was never alone.
Con: I was never alone. LOL
But seriously, while it's great to have a big, happy (most of the time) family,
I missed out on so much of my parents' lives. They were both 45 (same age I am now) when I was born and were so worn out, I think I missed their "good" years. My mom passed away when I was 19, then dad when I was 27 . My oldest sibling is 20 years older than me and moved to Florida before I was even born. I personally would prefer just a couple kids and have a closer bond. We were hoping for 2 or 3 kids, but ended up with just one. . . sometimes God knows best~:D

Goodness......17 th child.......how could she manage everything.....I read the whole news yesterday...they say Michelle was pregnant for total 10 and half years..."Oh my God"....I had read one more story that says the highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782) of Shuya, Russia........ Between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 confinements, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets........ 67 of them survived infancy.

I read that after her first child she began taking birth control pills and had a miscarriage. She said she was so heartbroken and felt as though they had like shamed the Lord so they decided that they would have as many as the Lord gave them. Yeah I heard she is looking forward to number 18. But physically her body has got to be worn out. I mean that as in her calcium I would think would be very depleted. I have one and I have no patience!!!!! Seventeen....hehe I would go looney.

I have some clinical psychological thought about Michelle Dugger. There is a psychological condition called PCS....poly-children syndrome. It is where a woman craves to have many, many children when she knows she can have them. I realize some religious groups believe 100% in "Go forth and multiply"; so this could also be a part of their 17 children litter. She does have a lot of help with the older children assisting with the younger ones. However, more than one is going to eventually get slighted. I've had classes of students which weren't as large as her family.
Blessings to her, but it would not be for me.

Because someone chooses to have a lot of kids doesnt mean they have a mental problem or are religious...I am NOT religious and no, we aren't *mental*...I can't believe some of the people here, being so very closed minded...I would be scared for YOUR children..

My only concern with that many children would be...how can you distribute your love with that many children. I knew a family that had 13 children and 1/2 of them at least did not receive the love they should have. One of the children actually killed himself because he felt no one loved him...it was always about everyone else! Another got killed in a car accident, 3 are currently in prison, 1 is a striper, and the rest...Probably down the same path. Plus...how can you honestly afford that many children...looks to me like they would have to get some kind of government help to support that many children. So that is putting a strain on hard working people in America. I dont think anyone could give each and every child, the one on one time they need to grow and be happy! Children need individual attention!

The family you are describing would appear to be very disfunctional and have more problems then you may know about! Not all large families are like that! I am one of eight and not one of my siblings feels slighted in the least. We have all done well and not one of us has gone down any of those paths. I believe it's in how you are raised. You can feel just as slighted as a child in a small family as in a large one. Having a large family myself, I do not love one child above the others!
The Duggars do not receive any government assistance, but live very simple lives. They put less strain on our government then those that live off welfare. They do not have all the "material" things that this society feels are necessary to make themselves feel worthy of others! It took them seven years to build their house and even though I'm sure they received some sort of stipend from TLC for their show, the whole family was involved in helping to build it. The mother homeschools the children and they get their clothes from second hand stores and from people in their community. These children are taught responsibility by helping with chores and younger siblings. They have no time to be selfish and think about themselves only. I do agree it would be hard to give individual attention all the time but they do appear to be very well adjusted and very happy!
I would much rather see a family such as this, then one with children being left at home alone or neglected or abused by those who had them.

I wish I had a large family! Think about it, when everyone else fails you, you still have your family! I have two siblings, and they both live far away from me, which breaks my heart. It's not just about the parents, it's about the siblings too! I think it would be wonderful to have tons of siblings. :)

I don't believe that she has any syndrome at all. If you watch their programs in their entirety, they stated that they began using birth control pills when they first got married. They said that they were not ready for children, etc. and then she got pregnant on the pill (because obviously they are only 99% effective). Because she was still taking the pill when she didn't realize she was pregnant, it caused her to miscarry.
They are very religious, and believed that their actions (taking the pills because they weren't ready for children) caused the miscarriage. They believed that God was trying to give them a child, and because of their selfishness, the child passed away. So, they stopped using birth control, and decided to let God give them how many children he saw fit for them to have.
She isn't purposely trying to become pregnant over and over again...they just decided as a couple that they were putting it in God's hands.
Also, I wanted to mention that there are many religions that believe in modesty. I color my hair, have tattoos, etc...but part of my family is Pentacostal, and their denomination doesn't believe in women wearing makeup, cutting their hair, or wearing pants. They all have long hair, no makeup, and wear skirts. There are also other religions who believe in modest clothing and appearance. Many of my relatives look similar to the Duggar ladies.
The boys/men look "normal" as it was put here, because it is common for boys and men to wear khaki pants and have short hair....but with women, the magazines are full of cleavage, spray tans, and thongs-so it is uncommon anymore to see a woman who looks modest. There isn't anything wrong with it. I love my tattoos, bright nail color, etc. but I would rather see a modest woman than someone bent over in the store with their thong showing out of their low rise jeans, or a 10 year old dressed like Britney Spears.
I also agree that the Duggars are not on government assistance. They don't have a tv, so they don't buy dvds, etc. and don't have cell phone bills, $80 pairs of jeans, and a new Eddie Bauer SUV. They don't spend like so many others do, so they can afford the groceries, etc. They buy older vehicles instead of new ones-so they don't pay all the finance charges. They don't charge up credit cards buying $30 baby shoes at Gymboree. They live simple...

There is no need for anyone to chastise another for their opinion on this; nor is there a need for lengthy explanation. At this time, I'd prefer NOT to have 17 children. At one time in my life I wanted 6, then was only blessed with 1/2 that. Now I have 2 more. 5 is plenty for me. It doesn't matter to me how many children a person has. I don't have to take care of them and everything else that goes along with it. The readings have been interesting.

I couldn't imagine having that many children, I wouldn't be able to give them the attention they deserve. I would think that the children would be slighted emotionally. You cannot rely on a brother or sister like you should a mother or father for that bond. I am the oldest of five children and I can tell you there is an emotion difference between being an only child and then one of many. There is a difference. Yes you can raise your children to be good people in large families with excellent values but they do miss out on a special bond that no one else will ever be able to give them. How can mom or dad stretch that one on one attention for everyone fairly? Realistically?
Also, I have my two girls (one to replace me and one to replace my husband). There are too many people in this world that if we all were fruitful and multiplied like this there would not be enough resources in the world to sustain us all.

I could not imagine having 18 children!! Although, when I was younger I did want 12. DH cured me of that when we stayed his 8 of his younger siblings while his parents went to France to visit one of his sisters, she was a foreign exchange student there. This was in 1982. We had Danielle and I was 3 months pregnant with Richard.

I just saw an interview with the whole Duggar Family on the Today Show, all 19 of them, grocery shopping bill for the week, over $800.00, and she said with a smile on her face, they are gifts from God, and he said he is leaving the decision to have more children up to her, lol she said she would love more, Hello!! I cannot imagine that many all living under 1 roof, even if there house is over 7,000Sf............ her husband sat there with the biggest smile on his face holding her hand....
$800.00 a week for groceries - how the h3ll can they afford that? I barely bring home that much in a month.

Forget the food, if I had that many kids I would need $800 a month for Prozac and all the liquor!

What does he do for a living? He must have a really great job!
This is what he does for a living:
James Robert "Jim Bob" Duggar (born July 18, 1965) of Tontitown, Arkansas, is a former state legislator who served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. He is a real estate agent, and owns several commercial properties in his local area. He is perhaps best known as the father of the Duggar family, which currently includes seventeen children, with an eighteenth expected in January 2009.
Duggar ran in the Republican Party of Arkansas primary election for United States Senate candidacy in 2002, but lost to Tim Hutchinson. Duggar sought the Republican nomination to the Arkansas State Senate District 35 seat in Arkansas in 2006, but lost to candidate Bill Pritchard.
Jim Bob Duggar and his wife Michelle, who was named Young Mother of the Year in Arkansas in 2004, are conservative Baptists who endorse the Quiverfull movement and the teachings of Bill Gothard.
The Duggars say they live debt-free, which Mr. Duggar has said is “the fruit of a financial freedom seminar” he attended years ago. According to the FEC, Duggar's 2002 Senate campaign has closing debts of $101,163 he owes to himself, ranking him number 17 on 2001, 2002 Senate Campaign Debt. These debts were unpaid as of 2004.
