I have a question, I have a Maltese (Angie) who is the sweetest dog that ever lived, if you have owned one you know they usually have a favorite in the family, well my dog is in love with my husband and will protect him with her life! Me, she could care if a bear came and got me, however for the last 4 days the dog has been at my side wherever I go, she is laying next to me right now, if I go to the bathroom she is right with me, kitchen same thing....SHE HAS NEVER EVER done this! I don't understand what she is trying to tell me, it must mean something, I was thinking Earthquake! because pets sense things like that, but this has gone on too long, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

How old is she? Could she be getting ill?

I found this website and they might be able to help you. It looks like it has a lot of information about the breed.

Thankyou for the site, that is how I found my dog via that site at a rescue site...Angie is only 6, she is not acting sick at all, nothing else has changed with her, still playing squeekers, bowel movements, eating, etc. except this strange behavior....

I wonder if you might be able to email them. They might be able to give you an answer. They also have an open forum. I know that animals are very sensitive to what's going on around them, especially when it involves their owners or stange occurences with weather and such.
I know this is going to sound strange, but have either you or your husband been ill?

Yes, I can email them, and here is another thing, after hearing about that cat that was just on the news (Yikes) I said to my husband if I keel over, the dog was trying to let you know.....but no we have not been sick other than the aches and pains we already have. The weather has been the same, no drastic changes, I am going to go check in that web site, thanks again!

Interesting! I think she's trying to tell you something too, but I haven't a clue as to what! My dog, April, does this to me when we have thunderstorms, but obviously it's cause she wants mommy to protect her.
I heard about that cat too!

Maybe she just had a change of heart! Either way, I hope that all will be well with her and that it's not anything serious. Keep us posted if you find anything out!!

Maybe shes mad at your hubby and trying to make him jealous so shes hanging by your side. You might ask him if scolded her for something ( he might not even remember or have given it any thought)and she took it to heart.
Well its nothing! Please keep us updated!! :)

I just think she loves you! I have some cats that have to be on me all the time!!!! Animals are wonderful!!! Seriously, hope nothing is wrong. I recently had a cat with feline infectious anemia which was quick to cure!

Nope my husband did not scold her, and tonight she has eased up a bit...but now she is laying in bed, something she never does unless someone is in the bed with her! I think she is feeling blue for some reason, lord knows she gets alot of attention with rubs a hundred times a day, treats, and of course her squeekers! Maybe she is PMSing?? I hope she snaps out of it tomorrow!

This may sound strange, but are you menstrating? My boy dog, (doberman) would never leave my side during that time of the month. He would follow me, get in between me and hubby.
Or maybe your pooch just loves you, and wants to be around you!:)

Angie has not been sniffing at any spot, and no with the period, that went by by 22 years ago!! I just got confirmation this morning that I was accepted into a Maltese forum so I went and posted my question over there, geesh my post first has to be approved by the mod before it will show up, lol so I am waiting maybe they will have some insite for me.
Here is the forum in case anyone with a Maltese is interested,

Hmm..... extreme changes in behavior are alarming - have you called the vet? I would hate to think something is wrong, but it is better to be safe than sorry. I learned that one the hard way. My last kitty would lay on the floor a few feet away from me and cry and cry - just thought he was been a stinker. Found out after a week of this, that his kidneys had failed and he was in so much pain he couldn't make it all the way across the floor to me. Broke my heart when I found out and had to put him down.........It still makes me cry........

No, she is not doing any other thing differently, just this, if she does not snap out of it I will take her to the Vet just to be sure, It would kill me if something happened to her, she is soooo sweet, I wish you all could meet her, she is just a love!

Thankyou for asking, yesterday she seemed to be changing her habits again, she did not follow me ever minute, she finally sat on her chair in the breakfast room where she has a chair looking out the window....I also think having a new deck put on the front of the house and my husband staining the deck had something to do with her behavior, I think the smell of the stain may have not agreed with her, she is still sleeping with my husband, lol so I will see how she is today when she gets up, hopefully she is much better today!

Yup - any type of environment change / strange odors will do that!! I hope that that was the issue!! And I hope she is getting back to her normal routine!
My poor charlie was so freaked out for an entire week during my move - I didn't think the poor thing was going to have any hair left he was shedding and panting so much!! They just really don't like change!

I am really glad to hear she's doing better! We don't have pets because several of my children are allergic to them, but I do know how important they are to some families and especially when they aren't themselves. You know it's funny, but my children react to change in the same way and go back and forth between my husband and I!! lol

Humm today she is 50/50 still following me around but did take a few breaks to look out the window from her chair, I finally got a response from the Maltese site where I signed up late last week and they said don't worry about it, that they can change their minds that quick and show the other person favoritism, I have had a Maltese since 1986, when he passed we waited 3 years before we got this one, and neither one ever did something like this until now, so I was really worried about her.....

I just checked in at the Maltese site to see if anyone had added any insight in to why Angie is acting this way, a woman wrote that this is normal for a female Maltese dog to do this, she said she has had 3 females and they all did this, our last Maltese was a male and never acted like this, but then again he thought he was human too, yup he was top dog alright! I miss him too!
So I am just going to enjoy Angie following me around, knowing this is ok, and heck she may change her mind again, who knows, time will tell.

I'm glad to hear this is normal for Angie's breed! That's got to be a relief. :)
My dog, Mandy, has started sitting outside our door and whining at 3:30 in the morning! We have to keep our door shut because the dogs want in bed with us, and there's just not enough room for all four of us. And, there's not enough room for both of our dogs to sleep on the floor. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now and it is driving me nuts! I normally get up around 4:40, so I can't understand why she won't wait an hour. Ugh! Who knows why dogs do the things they do?

Yes, you wonder what dogs think, I thought that was cute that they whine like that for your attention, but not at that time in the morning! maybe they just miss you, or they are lonely...and want to play! Ya, I know, not at that time in the morning!!

Why is it that our animals seem to be so nocturnal? Obviously it doesn't bother me when I am up all night ~ but to be pounced on when I actually do get to sleep...and we are talking an all out pounce on my head....or have straws dropped on my face (that is kinda funny!) stinkers..........

I do believe it's because she's lonely, so I haven't been growling at her. I just hope she quits doing it soon! My sister is coming for a visit on the 25th and I don't want Mandy waking her up so early (we have a very small house).
Of course, my hubby sleeps right through it. Reminds me of when our children were babies and didn't sleep through the night, LOL!

dogs have been known to sense things and I do know many dogs that can sense if someone is going to have a seizure, ect. have you been to the doctor lately?? do you have seizures? I dont mean to scare you but there is a reason for why she is acting so needy. I would also calland speak with the vet. I have two rescue dogs and I know they can be much more work than normal dogs from breeders. she might also have a problem with separation anxiety. maybe you were an hour or two late form work one day... she might think she is going to be abondoned again. if thats the case she might need meds. good luck!

I really appreciate your concern, but no I have never had a seizure, yes I have been to the doctor but it is for my knees, and no separation anxiety, we are home usually 24/7 because we are retired. The Maltese site seems to think this is normal for the female Maltese, funny cause she is sleeping with my husband and will not leave him until he gets up, if he stayed in bed all day she would not leave him.

She has an appt on friday, that is the soonest I could get in, if she were in pain I would of insisted they see her asap, thankfully she let me see in her mouth! other than that she is acting ok, and we just played squeekers, her favorite game!

when I worked as a vet asst. , I saw many things happen, there were 3 vet's in our office , I worked for the head vet but the things that go , you would'nt believe . I have seen many animal's heart stop during a routine neuter, or spay, and then crash, I have given cpr to many. And then see the vet hand them off to the owner and say, "Buddy, was terrific." Now I have worked for many vets, and I have seen these type's of things in almost every CTR.

Oh I am sure there is alot that happens in a vets office, some have no "bedside manor" and are there for the money...some are very passionate and it shows, not only do they love there job, they eat, sleep, and breath animals....I had the one who was in it for the money.....he had seen my dog prior to giving the wrong shot, Murphy had a bad back and every so often it would go out much like a human back. There was a shot they would give him that would ease the pain and help him relax until he felt better, well the last time at the vets he never looked at his chart and gave him a shot, the shot he gave him was one that can only be administered once a year, atleast this is what the doc told me after I brought him back because he was worse, he told me, I am sorry but I gave him the wrong shot....case closed, cold hearted...go home and don't bother me, I was more stunned than anything...Murphy never recovered and got to where he could not walk let alone eat or drink, I knew he was suffering, and we had to have him put down. We did not sue, I think what happened was just too much for us at the time, it was devastating to lose a member of the family that we had for 13 years, this is why I will not go back to that vet with the high tech equipment......he not only charges out of site prices, he has a bad reputation in this town.

I am sure he has alot of complaints against him, I have a friend who would not listen to me, she chose to go there because of all the high tech equip he has, I warned her....that is all I can do, she had to take her dog in because the rabies shot they gave her made her skin turn black, well they had to do a blood test, office visit, return visit, etc...cost?? almost $500.00, that is what I call outrageous...and then in the end they tell her, well alot of dogs have a reaction to the rabies vaccaine,....nice caring vet huh?

It's really nice to see someone care about their pets so much! I wish my neighbors would take better care of theirs. They don't mistreat them, but the dog, some sort of small terrier, is chained up in the fenced in yard because it gets out and it sits out there all day yelping. The cat uses our landscaping around our house as a litter box and my porch furniture to sit on! Why do people have pets if they aren't going to take care of them?
Cpogie
08-16-2007, 06:17 PM
You are right, some people do not deserve to have pets, some never pay attention to them and think that barking all day is a good sign of a guard dog! being tied up all day is cruel to do to an animal, they need to be free in there own fenced yard to run and get excercise or be taken for a walk, my neighbor has a dog and all she does is feed it, never plays with it, or walks it, or even lets it in the house, why have it?? even pets need to be loved!

So much to respond to!
I agree, I would rather have a no-frills vet who cares than a high-tech one. It's too bad animal doctors don't have to live up to the same high standards as people doctors! Carol, I hope Angie's okay!
Yes, Wendy, show us your new kitty!
Our neighbors behind us make us so angry! At one time, they had two dogs, a male and a female. They refused to get their dogs spayed or neutered, and along came THREE sets of puppies, one right after the other. They never took care of these poor babies, and would merely cart them off to the pound. The last litter, they kept putting off doing anything with them, and finally, the poor things started dying from worms (so they finally took them to the vet for de-worming medicine). It was so sad, and I felt so helpless! Looking back, I wish I would have called and reported them, but I just didn't know what to do! After the last batch, they got rid of the little female, which I thought was depressing. They treated these dogs like they were cattle! The one remaining dog is pretty much on his own in the backyard--I never see them talking to him, or playing with him. It's sooo depressing!
BTW, our two dogs came from the first batch of puppies. I'm glad we have our dogs, but sad about the circ u m stances surrounding their entrance into the world.
Cpogie
08-16-2007, 07:49 PM
That is sad, that is why some should not, and do not deserve to have animals, I wonder how they treat their children (if they have any) if they can treat an animal like this! I feel so bad for animals that are abused!

I have two rescue dogs and my male dog was very badly abused. It took years to get his behavior turned around. He is a boxer/ chow mix which are larger dogs and at 5 years old he still only weights 38 lbs. due to malnutrition. It truely is horriable. In dealing with the aftermath of an abuse pet... please please please report abuse to the police or animal control. The sooner The better. Sometimes they will just go out to the house and help out with vacinations or pay for the pets to be fixed. YOu could save a life.

Kitty naming contest!! LOVE IT! I don't like "froofy" names though! We are going to get another boy. The kitten pictures aren't posted yet - but these are the moms and dads. "quincy" is the spitting image of my mister who passed away last year! Aren't they gorgeous?

We are home from the vet, what a great vet she is! she sat on the floor with my dog, hugged her, pet her, and checked her out everywhere and said yes, she does have an abcessed tooth right in front, so next Thursday she goes in and has her tooth pulled, and if others need to go she will extract them too......I also told her about her recent behavior, and she said what sarasarax2 said, pets sometimes sense illness, but she was not suggesting this was the case, but very well could be, so I told her that we both have medical issues, but nothing we are not aware of, so now I am going to make an appt for my husband, and get him checked ..............thanks again to all of you for your words of encouragement, and thankyou sarasarax2 for your timely advice!

Glad she is okay...and she is getting that tooth taken care of!!! I know that has to hurt. My cat is almost 16 years old and has lost a few teeth. We have had to take him to the vet over them a few times. Most of them came out unexpected. He is a fighter and still active at his age!

hey no problem. I am glad your getting you husband in to get checked out. now when an animal senses something wrong with the owner its pretty immediate. seizures can be sensed like 30-45 minutes before it happends or in nursing homes some therapy pets will know when a ill patient is close to passing. like 4-6 hours away. so it's good your getting hubby checked out but i would not worry to much. when pet sense things they are more immediate issues.

:D Angie is home from the Vet's, she is still woozy and sleepy, she had 2 teeth pulled, the front 2 teeth, and the best part, they saved the teeth for me, and asked if I wanted them, of course I do!! I told them, the tooth fairy if going to come for her!! they thought that was cute.
They also commented on her behavior, they said she is the sweetest, most gentle dog they had seen in a long time, gee I knew that, but it was nice of them to say that. Needless to say I am so happy she is home!! The first thing she did was drink water for a minute, then ate her food....now, sleeping right next to me! :)

so far so good!! The breeder hasn't told me anything bad...so I am going to assume the best (she told me she would inform me right away if something happend to tiny boy) Although there is going to be another male if he doesn't make it.....he's(tiny boy) a fighter~he's fiesty...will fit in very well with my family!!! I want him!!

One of my teachers I work for put both of her dogs down due to age and other illnesses this am. We have a book(not that we write) that is about dogs being angels that we pass around at school to help you get through this sort of thing. I will post this if anyone is interested. If you order this from the author she will sign it. There are so many of us that have lost dogs at our school this year, we have almost started a bereavement group.

When our last Maltese was put down, my husband was just sick over it, after all he was with us for 13 years...my sister in law knew a woman who painted a picture of your dog/cat, etc. from a picture you have on a rock, my sister in law had a picture done for my husband, and it looked exactly like Murphy, he had a hard time looking at it at first, but now he is glad to have it.

Wendy, how is the baby doing? I think about that kitty everyday!
My friend and I stopped at the pet shop today, they had 4 puppies, 2 Maltese and 2 Poodles, all were about 4 months old and so adorable, I fell in love with one of the Poodles, he was so loving and liked to rubbed in places like Angie, he layed in my arms with a paw over my arm, it was so cute, all the while looking up at me with these sweet loving eyes....I told him I would love to take him home with me, and that whoever adopts him better treat him good!! they must of thought I was nuts talking to the dog this way....my friend wanted to buy it for me! I said OH no, Angie would probably love him but my husband would not be too happy with another dog........when we left we both agreed that we probably shouldn't of stopped at all because we wanted to take all of the pets home with us!!

Is there a specific reason that they have to be 12 weeks old before you can have one?
wendav13
09-21-2007, 01:51 PM
yup - because she breeds national and international champs she has them neutered prior to them leaving to ensure no one is going to (a) try to show or breed without the proper paperwork and payment (b) ruin the bloodlines! She is really, one of the best breeders I have encountered!!! I think the baby is going to have a great personality!

I haven't read everyone else's posts, but here's a thought:
Are YOU ill?
I am diabetic, and I have a 7 yr old Chow/St. Bernard Mix that knows when my sugar is crashing. I don't know how he knows, but he does. More than once he has come to my side and nudged me to pull me into the kitchen to the area where he knows I keep my testing supplies.
My family will attest to this.
And also, about 18 months ago, I wound up with a really bad staph infection on my leg.. he KNEW I was ill before the infection actually flared up.
Just a thought.

I hope Tina will not take offense, but come back and read the thread when she has time.....there are some interesting stories and pictures.

:) Hello everyone,
I just wanted to share with you that I have two small dogs. I have a Pekingese, her name is Maddie but I like to call her Mad Dog because she has a crazy side to her and the other is a Chihuahua (which looks like the Taco Bell dog) and her name is Nibbles. My Chihuahua was tossed from a car because she had a leg that was broken in two places and I guess the person that tossed her just did not care enough to pay for the operation to fix her leg (they did catch the guy). They operated twice, first they had to put two screws the size you would find in eye glasses thru the bone to set them correctly and then 4 months later they removed the screws. She is so fast on her feet now you would never know she had a broken leg except when it is damp, like us humans she has her days. My Pekingese also had her problems, the family that had her before me left her outside all the time in a small cage from the time she was a puppy until I became her new mommy, she was a X-mas present for the kids but they did not want the dog in the house because they had expensive items. I finally said one day that I would take her and if they wanted to come visit my door was always open, I never saw any of them again. Needless to say it took a very long time for her to know what love was. I had her for just over a year before she trusted me enough to give me kisses. She has a crazy side about her:p , it is kind of funny we will all be sitting around watching tv and she will get up start to play with Nibbles and then start running thru the house, and then when she get tired she runs to her bed and rolls around in it until she falls back to sleep.
They are my babies........AND THEY HAVE ME TRAINED VERY WELL....LOL;)

Your dogs are the lucky ones, thankyou for saving both of them, how anyone could throw a dog out a car is beyond my imagination, that made me cry, thankfully you have her now! the same with the other dog, in my opinion it is cruel to cage a dog all the time! thankfully you have her. There are too many people who have no business having any animal let alone kids! Animals give so much love, I know these 2 are not only getting tons of love, they are giving it as well, god bless you! Thanks for sharing your animals!! wish you had some pictures to post here.

Ok, just tried and I am stuck, how do I get the file from Photobucket to upload here, what URL do I use?

You can use the "img" quick post to post to the forum {right click on the link in photobucket - it should say"copied" and then paste into this browser}or the "http" quick link for pictures to large to post to the site - (users can click on the link and they get directed to your site automatically) I have been using the "img" for the pictures of george..........if you need any other hints or help, just pm me and I will walk you through it!

Hi,
My Grendel has been here for about 4 months. He's around nine or ten years old. He was totally my dog from day one. But, he has become much more social and all of a sudden, he just loves my hubby like crazy. He gets really excited when he comes home from work or just comes in the door. For the longest time, he either wouldn't have anything to do with the hubby or he would growl at him if he was to close to me. Personally, I think I liked Grendel better before! lol
Maybe your Maltese has just finally decided that your all right after all. It seems to take them a while after the initial one-person bond to decide that other people can be okay, too.
Still, might not be an awful idea to go have a physical just in case.

Yup, that's how he got his name. He was such a little anti-social critter when we first got him that we gave him a little monster kinda name. He's so sweet now though that it's weird. He loves the kids, the hubby, etc. Sleeps above anyone's head and barks for joy the minute someone comes in the door. Now, Caesar (the goose) is our only anti-social critter. He likes me though, because I'm "mom".

I take care of my dogs and they follow me every where I go.I get up and walk to the kitchen all 4 dogs are in tow...I go downstairs to the laundry room they are right there,I go to the computer they all sit around me,I stand up and go to the bathroom they all wait out side the door....maybe she's figured out that you are the leader of the pack???? you should check on dog whisperer's website maybe you could ask him.
