I'm looking for any advice on how to get rid of the nasty stains you get around your burners on your stovetop. I've tried alot of different types of cleaners but nothing has worked! Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance...
Angie:)

I don't think yoiu can get rid of those stains, atleast I know I can't, and my stove is only 3 years old, but then we cook morning, noon, and night, we love to cook! I clean my stove everyday but I think it has something to do with how they make stove's now, I think it's a cheaper coating of porcelain that they use, I don't ever remember my moms big old stove (1940's) doing this, and those stoves were well built! I think they cut corners for the sake of making a dollar!

Yes, I have used every product on my stove, the discoloring is caused by heat, which will not come out.

Sorry, but I don't know either. My parents have tried putting aluminum foil but it still goes through. My dad once scrubed the stove using a foil scrubber I think and comet? Anyway, he got most of the black out but not all and he got exhausted by scrubbing so much.
But there's a way to make your stove top last longer with less black stains. I hope. My mom does this almost everyday (she would every day if she didn't work) .
After she washes the dishes, she washes the black iron plates or whatever they are called in the sink with soap and water using those sponges that's green and rough on one side. Then she uses a washcloth with soap and water and twists it in the sink till it's not as damp. She then cleans the stove... I think she also uses Windex? Then she rinses out the cloth and twists it until it is as dry as she can get it to wipe the soap away.
If you like, you can give it a try. Just be careful. :)

I may have hope. Is the stain from food or rust?
If it's rust or something that has worn the porcelain off of, the best thing to do is to buy those silver covers.
If it's caked on, baked on food (don't feel bad, a lot of people have this problem) there is hope. Fill around burner in the dip with ammonia. Fill to the rim but be very careful not to go over. Don't breathe. Cover burners with lids (pot or pan lids work best.) Do this in the morning and leave it set over night. Don't mess with it until that night. Then take a squeezed out sponge and soak up the ammonia very carefully. Make sure the whole time there is good ventilation! After you've done this scrape the gunk off. It should be pretty easy, but you'll probably need to use some elbo greese. Be careful not to scratch your stove while doing this.
I had this problem too many times! My husband likes to cook and he's a MESS! May I suggest getting those silver covers after you clean it. They're cheep and are a lot easier to clean.
www.RealSimple.@aol.com has alot of good cleaning suggestions.
It alwaya scares me to think someone might not know, sorry if you already do but NEVER MIX ANY CLEANER!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck!

This is exactly why I replaced my stove with a smooth top one when our old one went out almost a year ago. I cook every day (there's nothing a restaurant can make that I can't make better) and the new stove looks like the day it was installed. If is gets gunk on it from cooking, a tiny, tiny bit of the ceramic stovetop cleaner and a damp paper towel is all I need to clean it.
Now, I was never able to get the stains off the old stovetop, but I did find a great "recipe" for cleaning the rings and drip pans:
Fill a large pot with water, four tablespoons baking soda and a few squirts of dish wahsing liquid. Place the stained rings and drip pans in the pot and bring the whole thing to a boil. Keep an eye on it in the beginning to prevent the suds from boiling over. Boil gently for at least thirty minutes. Carefully remove the rings and drip pans. Then sponge them off and rinse. Even though they may still seem dirty in the water, usually most, if not all, the gunk will come off when you rinse and wipe.
This does work and there are no fumes.

I have to laugh, .........I had the very same problem. My husband makes a mess when he cooks too. He hasn't learned the "clean as you go" rule yet. I give him credit though for venturing into my kitchen to begin with. He is doing a good job. He says I can't quit cooking though. Oh well.
OK, so back to the subject at hand. I have a white porcelain gas stovetop. I had stains that I thought I would never get off. I even became desperate and tried "lightly" scrubbing with a scotch brite pad, (you know the green ones). THAT didn't even work. So low and behold, my Dad comes for Christmas and says he can get it sparkling clean. I sincerely doubt him, but hey......scrub away. Can't hurt right?
Well, we go to the store and he grabs a can of Easy-Off Oven cleaner. (it was like heavy duty or maxium strength, comes in the blue can). He sprays it on before we went to bed that night, and the next morning, by the time I got up, he had it back to BRAND NEW status. I swear, it was perfect. He had even taken the "grates" that the pans sit on, sprayed them down (sitting on newspaper) and let them set for a while. You know even those look like new. Leave it to my Dad to fix it! Dear ole' Dad!!!
I know that my Mom was looking down from Heaven with her arms crossed and giving him the evil eye saying "you never cleaned MY stove!" LOL
Hope you try this and it works as well for you! Let me know! Good Luck.

I'm going to pick some of that up. It sounds so simple, when you think of oven cleaner myself anyway, I think of only the inside of the oven, I never thought of using it on the stovetop!!

My mom has done this for years! I remember her putting the drip pans in amonia and I guess water she would hurry and cover it with a towel to soak over night I believe. I think she would also put it on the stove around the burner area and scrub. I don't think she left that real long because of the odor in the house .Wow That was years ago but her stove always looked great.

Great story LisaRKR! I have no idea why I didn't suggest that. I've done it alot. But the fumes like to kill me with my asthma, which is stupid because so do the fumes from the ammonia. Whatever, I'm just glad you suggested it.
You sound like a great person! I'm glad you have such a great dad! Wish I knew what that was like.

I will have to have hubby try that on our stove. Like CARMA i have asthma and the fumes from that stuff kill me, or at leaset have the potential to. I have to stay away form strong chemicals and for that I dont think my house is as clean as it should or could be. I use baking soda and vinager alot. The fruity smelling pine sols are my friend as well. Anyways, thanks for tha tip!

Carma,
Thanks for the kind words. I always try to be the kind of person that I would want as a friend, and a good person like my Mom and Dad instilled in me. It deeply saddens me to hear that you don't know what it is like to have such a great Dad. Now don't get me wrong, he has plenty of faults, but I still think I got lucky! My Mom, however, is a different story. I truly believe that if you asked anyone that knew her they would tell you that she was truly perfect. An angel on earth, and God rest her soul, I was lucky enough to be her daughter!
You should know that you too seem to be a great, caring, thoughtful person. If you ever want to talk, just holler. We can find someway to talk via email or im.
Thanks again for your sweet words.

The ammonia has alot of fumes too, it sucks the breath out of me just not as bad as the spray oven cleaners. I too use alot of vinegar and baking soda. I think it works great. If you have tougher stuck on food (works great for drains too) boil the vinegar then let it soak. Good luck with the asthma!

I bought the Walmart brand oven cleaner, sprayed on stovetop let sit for about 15 minutes and then used an SOS pad, no hard scrubbing either. Stove looks brand new, everything came off!!!
Angie :)
While I was in the cleaning mood, I also bought Soft Scrubs new deep foam cleanser for the shower. IMO it is the best thing I've ever used. I've always had a problem with soap s*** not coming all the way off even after scrubbing my arm off, this was so easy, once again I also used and SOS pad. I'm wondering if it's the cleaners or just the SOS pads that are working!?

Be VERY CAREFUL !! I have been working on my stove for 2 days and used the easy off oven cleaner. My oven looks brand new as well as the oven racks and the cooking racks on top but I .. :( like a dummy:( .. I used the rag I wiped off the racks and such with to wipe down the sides of my stove. After running the rag over one side of it my phone rang and when I came back to finish it the first swipe took off the paint:eek: .. ughhhhh lol I had rinsed the rag really well but I guess not well enough lol Luckily the sides of my stove are hidden from sight because I think I would cry every time I would have to see it
Also make sure you use rubber gloves as the cleaner is really nasty for skin.
for the cook racks on top...it does work great and it works quicker if you heat then up first them pick them up with a pair of pilers then spray.. but watch out for the fumes. Once they cool you can drop them into some water and that takes most of it off right away
Just be careful and good luck... mine looks great except for the side lol

WICKED! I never would have known that even though you rinsed your rag, you still took the paint off. You also have to be very carefull to only use it on your grill racks, oven racks, stove (inside and top). If you have any questions if it's paint and not porcelin enamel DO NOT USE IT! My daughter-in-law used it on the hood above the vent not knowing it wasn't enamel because it was exactly the same color and she took the paint right off.
The gloves are a must! Think about it, we use nicotine patches, birth control, nitro for your heart and all sorts of things that are absorbed into the skin. Now think about the multi-hazardous chemical crud that is absorbed into your skin every time you clean. It scares me to death. I'd really recommend a mask for the oven cleaner also. If it's wicked enough to take paint off after being rinsed out of the rag I certainly don't want to breathe it!
Don't forget....watch for drips! It WILL ruin your floor and anything else it gets on!
Good luck!!!
