I am going out of town tomorrow and will be gone until May 4th.
I was going anyway because my niece is graduating from college on Saturday. However, I received some rather bad news on Sunday. My brother-in-law, John, fell 14 feet from a loft at work and landed full on his face (we believe he fainted or passed out first). Every bone in his face is broken, and he has a fractured skull. There's a contusion in his brain that's been hemorrhaging, but the bleeding has stopped, which is good news. He's been in ICU in a medically-induced coma. The doctors say since he has made it this far, his prognosis is good. He's been moving his hands and feet, and today, they stopped the coma drugs, and he came to. He was able to communicate by writing. :) We are all very happy and relieved, even though he does have a long road ahead of him. His poor face has been completely destroyed. :(
I know I am leaving some stuff undone, and some messages unresponded to, and I sincerely apologize. Please hang tough until I get back.
Thanks!
Chris

Chris,
I hope you can enjoy your trip and not worry about us! Things will still be here when you get back.
I too will be gone through the 4th. I fly out of Springfield, MO tomorrow morning at 6. I am going to Chicago for a funeral. My grandpa died. Meeting my mom and my brother there. I am hoping this will be a time when I get to see family I haven't seen in years and that it will be enjoyable rather than sad.
I will say a prayer for your brother in law. Be careful!

Thanks again. I appreciate those of you who responded. It means a lot.
John is doing well! In addition to the fractures in his face, he also has several fractures in his skull, a broken wrist that required surgery, and two broken bones in his foot. However, he is mobile, and he is cognizant. It really is amazing! He's a good man. We are all very happy and relieved that he survived this. We really didn't think he would at first, so we are all elated.
My niece's graduation was lovely. The weather was in our favor (it was outdoors), and it all went well. Her dad was able to watch her take the walk over the Internet. It was a four-hour drive, and I drove there with my nephews, which was nice. It was a good, bonding experience.
I'm going to look through messages later. However, if I overlook you, please do not hesitate to message me again. Unfortunately, I do not multi-task well, and I've had a lot on my plate lately. Just poke me, and if that doesn't work, you may give me a shove. :)
Caryn, I hope you made it home safely, girl.

They've moved him to a rehab hospital. He'll be there for two weeks, and I'm not sure what will happen next. He's having good and bad days, which is to be expected. They've discovered blood clots in his legs, so they are keeping an eye on that, and he is having trouble swallowing. :( Today, he was running a fever. But...he is still here!
Thanks for asking, Carol. :)

Thanks, Wendi! :)
John was able to go home last Friday, and continues to do better every day. My sis says he seems like a stroke victim, and she is in such sorrow. We're all hoping that he will continue to heal, and that he'll someday be back to normal or at least as close to normal as possible.
Thanks for asking, Carol. I should probably mention that I will be going out there again in June. I'm not sure of the exact dates yet, but I will post when I'm going to be gone as soon as I know.

I can just imagine how sore John must be. It's going to take time, but he will heal. I think everyone does much better at home in their own bed, having your loved ones near. I'm glad you are going back in June, your sis needs your moral support...so glad you are close to her. I will keep you all in my prayers. HUGS.

I got this e-mail from my sis today, and just thought I would post it for those who are interested:
We went to the ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor yesterday and found out the John is deaf in his left ear, his left vocal cord is paralyzed, and he has lost his sense of smell. He also has a ringing in his ear called Tinnitus that will never go away. The Dr wants to try intratympanic steroid injections into his ear drum to see if John can get some speech hearing back. This procedure is done on patients who have sudden hearing loss, not trauma patients. If he can hear just a little of speech, he can use a hearing aid. Since we have nothing to lose, we may as well try it.
Here is a list of John’s current injuries:
7 fractures in his skull – possible surgery on one of the bones
Sinuses shattered – possible surgery to enlarge the sinus opening
Hearing loss in his left ear – trying steroid treatment
Left paralyzed vocal cord – possible surgery
Loss of smell
Ringing in his ear
Left shoulder separation
Left rib broken
Plate in his right wrist – healing nicely
Right foot broken – healing nicely
Facial nerve damage on his left side
Filter in right leg to catch the blood clots if they break loose. The filter will be removed in 3 months.
John is doing amazingly well. The biggest issue is pain management. He can't talk on the phone because his right ear is real sensitive to sound. Over time, the brain will adjust to only being able to hear out of one ear.

Sorry to hear what happened to your BIL. Hope things keep improving for him and that your sister can keep her spirits up. My brother had a similar accident a few years ago, although it was his leg not his face that was broken. He was almost to the roof of a building when the ladder skidded out from underneath him and when he hit the ground, his bone was actually sticking out from his leg. It was a long road to recovery. He now has metal plates and screws in his leg and had to switch to a "desk job" at his work due to the injury. What helped us was to just keep focusing on the fact that things could have been A LOT worse. He and my SIL got through that terrible time and so will your BIL and sister. They just need to take it one day at a time. I'll send good thoughts and prayers their way.
