Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that the pharma companies have programs that will provide you or someone you know with low cost or free medications if you qualify.

My dad gets several medications for free, as do some of my patients. The site I use the most is www.needymeds.com (http://www.needymeds.com). You can search by brand name, generic, or the pharma manufacturer. They have links to the different websites and also have many of the forms you need.

The requirements are spelled out. There is different criteria for each program, but many people can qualify. Usually, you need proof of income (w-2 form if you file, 1099-SSA if you get Social Security, etc.) and the doctor to fill out the form and write a script for you. It does not matter if you own a house or have money in the stock market, in the bank, or under your mattress, it goes by your income.

Many people don't have insurance now, or their medication is not on the "formulary list". Some of the programs also cover Medicare patients who are on Part D (Drug program) when they fall into the doughnut hole and are responsible for over $2k of medication after they exhaust their first round of benefits.

I have nothing to do with the above mentioned web site, and I am not an advertiser. I just want to make sure that people know that there are options out there so they don't go without life saving medication.

Also, DO NOT go to the sites where the "advocates" will get the forms and fill them out for you for a price. You are giving them pertinent information (dob, ssn, etc) that they can use. People can be unscrupulous. Besides, you know how to fill out a form with your own information, don't you? :) I do the forms for my dad, but that is because I have done them forever for him.....

I hope this can help someone else also. It has been a life saver for my dad, helped many of my patients so they did not have to make the decision of medication or food, and helped a dear online friend's mom have one more year with her family with little pain....

This is a wonderful post that can hopefully help people! In addition, if you are in need of a brand name medication, PLEASE ask your pharmacist if they have any coupons for it. These coupons are given to the pharmacist by the drug reps when they visit, and 9 times out of 10, the coupons are thrown away when they expire. Once you use one, often times you can contact the manufacturer, and they will send them to you through the mail.

When I worked as a pharmacy tech, we would have coupons for Prevacid, Ambien, Singulair, and many of the migraines medications.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask! I would hate to see the coupons go to waste when they can save someone a few bucks!
