My son wants a hamster . do any of you have hamsters? I'm just wondering how loud they are at night. and if they are hard to care for and if they would be ok to take camping when we go.

Hamsters are noisy at night. Be careful the type of cage you buy. My favorite cage has a plasic bottom with a snap on wire top. There is a built in wheel. My hamster has never escaped from the cage. The opening is a door on the top. He has escaped from the kind you can buy piece and connect. If you lose or a piece is destroyed it is very expensive to replace. Bottles are $9 and a replacement door comes in a three pack for $7. Buy the sturdy wire cage.

Be careful bunny, hamsters can bite. LOL My Mom bought my DD one when she was little, and it kept biting her. She would just hold it and it would bite her. She got tired of getting bit, and gave it away. :D:)

I have one and she sleeps at our heads. Yes they can be loud but so can any animal you may have. We close off her wheel somethings (she likes to run) but it really does not bother us at all and I am a really light sleeper. I love having her in my room. I have had hamsters all my life (over 12) and yes they can bite but the more you handle them the better they get. Start with wearing gloves if they bite and hold them everyday for at least one hour. They will get use to you but you have to give them time. Don't give up.
Mine bites but we feel it it because she has been though so much. Before we got her, she was in a fight with another hamster and lost one of her ears and had a big gash on her head. She is doing well.
also leave them with a friend or family member while your camping.
Good luck.

We have had hamsters dwarfs and regular. IMO the dwarfs were harder to handle because they bit more. The regular one we had was quite sweet after the initial "breaking in" period. We wore gloves and handled her every day and after a while she became quite tame. We would stick her in the plastic traveling ball and she would roll around and play with the dog. It was kinda funny. They will do better if they get fresh water every day and you must thoroughly clean out the cage at least once a week, and replace the wet bedding (usually in one corner of the cage) with fresh bedding at least every other day. They are up at night and will run and be active for hours at a time if you have a wheel. And they really do need this they are quite the little athletes. I think they are a good 1st pet if you want to teach responsibility. But be aware they can live 3-4 years if properly cared for.

I have had hamsters in the past (waaaaay in the past, if you get my drift). All of mine were Teddy Bear hamsters - fuzzy little sweetie-pies! Get a hamster that's been hand-raised, and the more you handle them, the tamer they become. You can quiet a squeaky exercise wheel by applying a little beeswax (be careful what you use, make sure it won't hurt the little furball if it happens to lick around on it. Don't take it camping, find someone to hamster-sit.
Oh, by the way... when you're handling that hamster... if it's little feet get really warm, it's about ready to potty... Trust me. :D

I use Veggie Oil. It works the best and it is safe for the hamster. I use it on all my animals when they get something stuck on them or stuck on something.

OK thank you for the warm feet advice that is too funny. I will keep that in mind if we get one.
