Hi. I need more clear information from other people who had their tongues pierced. My daughter and niece want it done. Like what to look out for and how to properly take care of and how to identify if going down hill and what to do if it happens?

In my opinion this is gross, can't imagine why people do this one, but stranger things have happened.....Hope they are of age to do this!
Here is a link that explains the process...

I personally am very against facial piercing of any kind. Being in foodservice management we see a lot of kids coming in wanting to work .The first thing there told is it all has to be removed! It is violation of many health ordinances.Your lucky if you can wear a wedding band in the kitchen and thats it.

I did allow my crew to wear a tongue ring if it was clear and The first time I see it sticking out and being chewed on like a toy it was gone. Since I am being honest I must tell what I see when I see a young face all pierced.

One time my dads little black dog run through some fishing poles and got a bass lure caught in the corner of his mouth. He was pulling which caused the string to tighten only making things worse. Me and my fiance had just arrived it was his first time to meet my parents. Yeah! So he grabbed the fishing line and was trying to bite it in half to free the dog at the same time dads other little black dog is biting him because he now thinks he done it.

When we finally contained the dog and had him quietly wrapped in a towel to head to the animal hospital he had the corner of his eye the skin part and the side of his mouth and a paw attached. I must say my dad is paralizyed and couldn't do anything but scream save my dog while my mom run around screaming what are we gonna do?? This was one of those not funny at the time but agreat laugh now stories.Yes both dogs and hubbys ankles all recovered!! lol

Ever since that day when i see someone with a lot of facial piercing I picture that dog and think doesn't that hurt? That darn dog was a hurtin!!

Carol: I tried a couple of times yesterday and this morning of that website you sent me to look at is still not working.

Debbie: I know about this tongue piercing. I'm not crazy about it and all kinds of body piercing except for ear piercing. I just want to know all the information for me to know more and to inform my daughter and my niece. My daughter has been asking to have it done for 3 yrs and I didn't want to because of the dangers and my daughter will turn 16 in 2 months and my niece is 17 will be 18 in 5 months. I'm trying to convince my daughter to wait till she's 18 and hopefully she will forget about it.

Thanks for your concerns.

Alice, I think it is very wise of you to find out as much information as you can about it to share with your daughter. I've known someone who's done this, and she said it hurt like heck to get it done. She couldn't eat for a week! I also believe there is a high risk for infection. Do a Google search, or search the medical sites (like Webmd) for more info.

As a mom, I would never allow my teenage daughter to do something like this. I'd make her wait until she's 18, at the very least. This is something she could regret later on down the line. When I was younger, I went through a phase where I wanted a tattoo, but I never did do it. The older me is so glad now!

If she's pestering you, you may have to put your foot down, mom! Sometimes, parents have to be mean, and if she doesn't like it, well, too bad! She may thank you later.

i had my tongue pierced for quite a while and may get it redone. It didn't hurt that bad, but your tongue swells to twice the size. lived on milk shakes for a week at least, can't suck through a straw. After it completely heals, you have to buy a shorter bar barbell for it (which i didn't, caused a couple of broken teeth). Have to take care of it like you would an ear. Must follow instructions given by the piercer. I don't think a teenager should do, they should be an adult - need to make the decision as an adult, not a trendy thing.
One has to make sure that the place is reputable. Must make sure they are CLEAN, that all tools are cleaned in an autoclave. Gloves must be used at all times.
They also need to be able to pay for it themselves. I think that would make them take care of it more.
OH, and i took mine out b/c I got bored with it, now I miss it.

It's good to hear from someone who's actually had it done! Are you saying that the hole closes if you leave the bar out?

ept_0202
07-29-2007, 01:57 AM
the hole closes pretty quickly. i had mine done for a few years before i could leave it out for a couple of days. but now i can't even tell that it was done. it takes a while to heal and i don't think some people realize this. you can't take it out at all for quite some time.

no on the tongue piercing.....let my daughter get her belly button pierced...went to a doctor who does piercings actually he pierced her ears when she was small.......more reputable than these tattoo parlors......looks good and no problems.. she takes care with cleaning the area...:) and you have no problems....

Actually, "these tattoo parlors" that you speak of have health codes. It is up to the person getting the tattoo/piercing to check into the practices of the parlor they are going to. My husband and I have tattoos , both of us have had piercings. If our kids want either one...they have to wait til they are of legal age. We will not sign for them to get anything done. I think what the OP is doing is awesome! Educating herself to explain why she says yes or no is great parenting. I never could understand the "Because I said so" from my parents!

I had mine done when I turned 18 and it was not what i expected. ept0202 is right that your tongue swells up so big and i lived on chicken broth for over a week. Even after that I had to relearn how to chew certain foods so i wouldn't catch food and pull on the barbell. Spaghetti was the trickiest one :D I ended up getting a mild infection because I used flavored mouthwash instead of the nasty regular kind to keep it cleaned. Good thing to know!!! I had to take mine out when i had my son and by the time I left the hospital it had closed and i wasn't able to get it back in. I too miss mine sometimes but I would never go through the pain for it again!!!

I was 28 when I got mine pierced, and I don't think I would let my daughter get hers done unless she was of age. It hurts and I know of several people who got theirs pierced and it was crooked! Also one of my friends got an infection, she had this green stuff around the ring, it was so gross. I took mine out before I had my daughter because it can chip your teeth. I also had a doctor tell me to take it out unless I wanted to end up with a lot of dental problems, because it can wear down the enamel on your teeth. To me its not worth the problems it can cause. Also if you dont check to make sure the balls on the barbell are tight constantly you could swallow them!

I had a friend with one and she loved hers but admitted to chipping several teeth on it - especially in her sleep. A piece of jewlery isn't worth those types of dental bills if you ask me...

Goodness gracious.........I had my belly button pierced about 12 years ago - and I think the only reason my hubby let me do it is because he didn't thinkI would actually go through with it!!! Well, I did........and for about 5 weeks regretted it every day!! Talf about pain and discomfort - I can't imagine getting my tongue pierced!!

I am sorry to say - and completely my opinion - but tongue piercings depict a "lower class" to me. Please don't let them get this done. They are soooo young - are they really going to want this when they get to be in their.....hmmmm....late 30's??? Men view this as something completely differently - and they will be view as such!!

"Because I said so" from a parent or authority figure prepares the child for the world. Not always does one get an answer from a superior; they shouldn't if it is not putting them in jeopardy, breaking God's laws, or breaking man's. If the superior wants to offer a rationale, that is fine, but don't question it for something frivolous. When you see a STOP sign, do you question why you should stop? When my children were growing up, I told them there would be times they'd want to question my rationale, but they'd not always get an answer. 2 joined the military and found out that one does NOT question a superior; they accept the answer and move on. Yep, I was a tough mama, and still am. Not always is there time to give a rationale.

I cannot imagine doing this on my tongue, Ouch! and pain are not something I like or want to impose on myself, I have enough pains in other parts of my body. I don't see the attraction to this, perhaps I am too old to understand what the attraction is, this is a fad I guess?

I have seen many students in junior high and high school getting this done. I had an 8th grade girl tell me that she had thought very carefully about her piercings and tattoos before she got each one and still she did it. It amazed me that these children from homes of poverty end up with tattoos and piercings like these that are not cheap. Yet... their parents don't have money for food or school supplies.

In our school district, it is school policy that tattoos and piercings cannot be seen. They must be covered with exception of earrings. You might want to consider this before allowing your daughter to get it done. My students had to replace nose and tongue piercings with fishing line to keep holes open during school hours.

I dont think it is just children in poverty that get them done, When I was in school all the "rich" girls were getting tatoos and piercings. I think it is how you raise your children. I did not come from a well off family but...I was taught to respect others, not use drugs, ect... My mom and dad are really good people and they raised me to be a mature young woman. It also has to do with how much self respect you have. I have no tatoos and only 4 piercings in my ears (2 in each ear).

I have 7 tattoos and had several piercings. 2 of which were in my tounge. I only suffered minor problems. ( just the normal swelling) That is just who I am. By looking at me, you would never know how many tattoos/piercings I have. But when people find these things out, they are different to me. I am a good person but yet, I get judged on my tattoos. (mostly fairies and angels) I don't understand that! But it is ok, almost expected of my Husband. Why do people get judged on these things? Should it matter?

Is this legal in your state for kids to get peircings or tattoos under the age of 18?? If it isn't legal why is it that a teacher or principal does not call child protective services, is there nothing they can do? have you also thought these children may be selling drugs to make money for this? I find it strange that a school district allows this, or is it that the school district has no control over this? gee so many things are different from when I was in school, having my skirt just above my knee was enough to send you home to change clothes...lol

Another thing to consider - especially for an underage child - is that a tongue ring can be looked at as a s e x u a l status symbol. I'm sure we've all heard rumors of tongue rings making certain ....actions even more pleasing. Since teenage boys have hormones on the brain in high gear....I'm sure some of them would look at it as an invitation instead of a piece of jewlery....Just a thought

Hi Chaly :) I have a friend who goes through this same problem with people. She too has her tattoos where they can be completely covered up without problem. She keeps them covered for her place of employment - which simply means no tanky top shirts (not great for a professional work place anyways - the tops...not the tattoos). But I've seen how some people treat her differently once they see them.

I'll be honest, I've been in a position of having a say when hiring someone. It is hard to hire someone to be a representative of a buisness when they come in with their lips lined with rings, nose rings...I've seen it all. Many people don't like to hear "the jewlery will have to come out for this job" and choose to end the interview process there.

Personally I like tattoos, I look at them as another form of art. I've seen some that were stunning! I can't say I'm such a big fan when people over do them or make big gaudy ~or~offensive ones where they cannot be covered up and even in those cases I still practice the live and let live theory :)

Chaly, it shouldn't matter, but for whatever reason, a lot of people have trouble getting past what others look like. I used to be extremely overweight, and you would not believe how differently people treat me now--especially men. Pits, but that's the way it is.

I know it stinks! People judge from the outside. When Mother in law met me, she didn't like me, because of the way I looked. I swear it took her 5 years to get to know me.
I understand that you have to look a certain way for work. I respect that. But just because you look good on the outside, doesn't mean that you are a good person on the inside. But I am sure that we all heard that before.

I agree, I have no clue where kids get there money for tattoos and piercings. They are expensive! Unless Mom and Dad are buying it for them. They only way I see it is: Mom and Dad are doing this for/with them, so they don't go out on there own to a questionable place. Maybe they think that it's safer to take them.

I can, but it's all stuff you probably already know. The most important things: find some sort of exercise you like and make it a part of your life, try to eat healthy, and utilize moderation and consistency. Eating healthy is, hands down, the hardest thing to master, and I am far, far from perfect. But, I do the best I can, and I am doing better every day. No matter what, I always eat a healthy breakfast, and for the rest of the day, I just try to take it one meal at a time. Also, don't deprive yourself. If you want something sweet, do it, but just have a little. For example, I just had an ice cream sandwich (Great Value Brand--170 calories). I also adore Fritos Chili-Cheese corn chips, so I buy them from Sam's in the individual serving packages and limit myself to one bag. Not much there, but it's better than none!

Also, my birthday is coming up soon, and you can be darn sure I am going to eat whatever I want to on that day! Having days off helps too. :)

I know that if a person is under 18 in Missouri, they must have a parent sign for them to get a tatoo and most piercings also. I know I even had to sign for my daughter to get her ears pierced. Most of the kids that I saw with body piercings or tatoos were just following in their parents footsteps. I had one girl tell me she gave her moms friends massages to earn money. Most of these kids have been hotlined so many times that they are under constant supervision. It's amazing the things that get hotlined and then just pushed off. I teach in a very low income school. We are required to go through a poverty workshop training "Ruby Payne" it teaches us that these tattoos and piercings are a status symbol. Sometimes kids get tattoos of mom's boyfriend's initials or the same symbol, often gang related. It makes them the person's property. They are marked. It is sad!

I am also against facial piercings. In my opinion they're gross. I have one daughter, and if she ever did something as gross as that, I can tell you she wouldn't have it for long. She wouldn't do that anyways, she's against it too from what she's told me.

It just started as one person had a piercing and next thing you know, they started putting them in places I won't even mention.

I know that 'snake bites' if that's what they're called, and tongue piercings can get infected since the germs in the mouth can get in the hole and infect it. And I would also have to agree what ept's post. ^^

I told my children, "If you get a tattoo or more than 2 piercings in your ear lobe or anywhere else, you're out of the will. I doubt if I'll have much to talk to you about, either. So make your choice. You can always do that sort of stuff when I'm dead." Only one has a tattoo, a daughter, and she's learning I say what I mean and mean what I say. High standards----you bet; closed-minded----nope, but we (my children and I) are not natives of a primitive tribe who need to use this to scare opponents or please the gods.

I am 28 now and I went through my "stages" with piercings. I had over 9 just in my face at one time and now you look at me....you would never know. At that point in my life...I loved it! When I graduated from graduate school, I had to let it all go.

I got all of that stuff out of my system before I became a "professional." I can tell yah I interview people for work and if you have a piercing in your face for an interview....you're done right there.

There is a time and a place for everything. Being a public speaker and professional is not one of them. I just want to smack people sometimes.

I do not personally have mine done, however, 2 of my sisters have had it done and they both said it was really not a big deal. They did have swelling, which I guess would be with any piercing, and they could not eat for a few days, but said it did not hurt. They said it took a while to talk and get used to having it. If the girls are serious about having it done, take them to a professional and have them talk them through the procedure and any complications that can occur. Atleast that is what I could do. It may help them make their decision.
Hope this helped!

I was nearly 40 when I got my tongue pierced. Must have been going through some sort of phase, I dunno. But anyway, everytime I had my teeth cleaned, my dentist warned me that my lower gums were being eroded away and will not grow back. I immediately removed my stud and threw it in the trash. Any regrets? Yeah, having it done in the first place. Oh and the 2 cracked teeth I had were replace by crowns.

I just think it's very nasty when they stick it between their teeth and flick their tongue back and forth. It's nasty and that clicking noise is annoying!
