I've heard about this soap, but I have never tried it. I've heard that it can be hard to find (I need to remember to look for it!). You can buy it online though:

http://www.soapsgonebuy.com/

And, here's what Wikipedia says about it:

 My mom always used this soap for laundry and when we said something bad she got this soap, lol she use to also break the bar in half because it was so big, I don't know if they are still the same size after all these years but thanks for the memories and the tips, I will have to buy a bar just for old times sake!

Ok, let me clarify the soap thing, she made us open our mouth and then she would just make sure some it got on our teeth, enough that we knew it was there, lol, only happened a few times, we got the hint! perhaps the bars were larger then, most everything has gotten smaller in the name of making money...I am putting this on my list right now, I know I have seen this at my grocery store!

Thank you, but no one in my area carries it. :( Saved me a lot of trouble looking for it!

The Wikipedia article says this:

Social History Note

During the 1920s and 1930s, Fels Naptha was often said to be the preferred soap for washing a child's mouth out who had used bad language. Numerous people from this era attest to having been disciplined in this way. The size of the bar made the discipline all the more dramatic.

I believe that I have seen this soap at Publix. I would be glad to buy and send the soap to you, I would just buy ia bubble wrap envelope and send it that way. shipping might cost a good bit , now that size in an envelope matters so much. If you have a Paypal account, you could pay me that way.

Goodness..I am glad to know I am not the only one who got their mouth washed out with soap!! (lol) I am the oldest of three and if I remember correctly, I was always getting into trouble for one thing or another......yuck - but if you do it today..watch out for "child abuse". I learned my lesson after a few "washings"........I would love to be able to find this soap, but in the north east - not easy to find!

This is very nice of you, but I'm really not that worried about it. It would be nice to try it, but I'm not willing to go to this much trouble. Thanks, anyway!

I had part of a bar my mom gave me last year, I never really used it. (she had bought a bar and cut it in half and let me have some so I could tri out) It was sitting down by my washing machine, never being used. well, this week I got some really bad stains on my clothes and after reading all the comments, I decided to use it. BOY, that stuff is good!!!!! It got most of the stains out, some were really bad but very little stain left. Some stains were completely gone, out of white pants, too! GREAT stuff!!!
Will somebody tell me if you can rub it on a stain and leave it for days unti you do the washing, without it ruining the fabric????

Cpogie

I think you can use this and not hurt your item by setting it aside until wash day, just as long as you let it dry so it does not mildew.

I subscribe to the Everyday Cheapskate newsletter, and today, the entire newsletter was about Fels-Naptha. Just thought I'd share:

A Bar of Soap That Packs a Punch!

It’s a little weird, quite old-fashioned and getting harder to find. So why should you know about Fels-Naptha heavy duty laundry bar soap? Two reasons: 1) It’s an amazing product and 2) it’s cheap.

Fels-Naptha laundry bar soap, manufactured by The Dial Corporation, has been around for more than 100 years. If you can find a store that carries Fels, it will be on the laundry aisle with the stain treatments.

Clean the shower and tub. Got soap s*** and hard water build-up? Rub a non-abrasive scouring sponge with a wet bar of Fels-Naptha and start cleaning. The first time will require a little extra work but it will be a breeze after that.

Clean paint brushes. To clean a paint brush, rinse it well with either water or paint thinner. Now simply drag the wet brush through a lathered bar of Fels-Naptha and work it in with your gloved fingers. Rinse well with warm water. The brush will stay soft and supple for the next use.

Zap aphids. Dissolve three tablespoons grated Fels-Naptha soap in one gallon of hot water. Mix well and let cool. Spray as needed on infested areas.

Laundry stains. Fels-Naptha soap is a fantastic stain remover and works especially well on oil-based stains. Just rub the stain with a wet bar of Fels-Naptha soap. Let it sit for awhile and launder as usual.

Baby stains. You know what they are and from whence they came. And they can be difficult to remove. Fels-Naptha will make quick work of every kind of baby stain on bibs and diapers.

Chocolate smudges. Rub the stain with Fels-Naptha soap and let the item sit in your filled washer into which you have added 20 Mule Team Borax. After 30 minutes, launder as usual.

Bye-bye makeup stains. To remove makeup from clothing and face cloths, wet the stain, rub the end of the Fels-Naptha bar into the stain until it begins to foam and launder as usual. It may take a repeat washing to completely remove the stain.

Clean white canvas shoes. Work the Fels-Naptha soap into a lather and use a soft brush to work soap into the canvas. Launder as usual without chlorine bleach.

Poison ivy relief. If you are exposed to poison ivy and you have a reaction, wash the area with Fels-Naptha to remove any resin, then rinse well. Fels-Naptha helps dry up the rash as well. Fels-Naptha is not a body soap and should be used with caution to treat poison ivy. Thoroughly wash all of your exposed clothing in hot water and grated Fels-Naptha (about 1/16th of the bar). This will effectively remove the poison ivy resin and prevent further outbreaks.

Bug bites. Washing the area with Fels-Naptha can greatly reduce the itching and discomfort from bug bites.

Can't fine it? You can get Fels-Naptha from Soaps Gone Buy—just visit www.soapsgonebuy.com or call Stephanie Woods at 1-888 858-7627. If you mention Coupon Code: EC100 now through August 5, the price is $1 per bar. Now that’s cheap!

It's probably because they make everything smaller now and charge more!! lol I used to think if was because I was smaller, but I've noticed more and more products since I've been "grown up" getting smaller or just containing less product!!!
I meant to look for this today and got sidetracked! Looks like next shopping trip!!

Before I start, I have used this soap for years, I use it on poison ivy, sumac, bee stings...etc... The results are amazing, itching and scratching gone immediately, contine to use every time you come in from gardening, farming, pretty much anything, replaces regular bar soap in the shower, face, in my household with no drying or flaking to sensitive skin. Apply a paste like lather to those oily blister-like bubbles from poison ivy, sumac, bee stings..etc...for sveral minutes, rinse and repeat. Cover with a band-aid or gauze to keep it from spreading. By morning, you'll be very surprised to the results, no more itching, blisters will fade away within 2 days, honest!:)
With me, it goes away in one day. I do grape farming and have 45 acres of woods and vineyards to get myself into trouble with. I purchase my bars at a local department store "KRAUS'" for $1.69/each 5-1/2 oz. bar. But you can get it on line at: http://www.soapsgonebuy.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=D1001&Show=TechSpecs

This is from their website:List Price: $1.89
Our Price: $1.25

Manufacturer: DIAL Corporation

Poison Ivy Prevention: Fels Naptha Soap has been used for over 100 years for the treatment and prevention of poison ivy, sumac and oak rash. My family has personally used it for over 10 years. If you think you have been exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, shower immediaetly with Fels Naptha to remove the resin from your skin. This will greatly reduce and in most cases, prevent any skin reaction to the poison ivy oil. Make sure to launder your clothes in some shaved or grated fels naptha (about 1/16th of the bar) to remove the resin from your clothes. Poison Ivy resin can stay on your clothes for over 1 year even if the clothes have been washed with normal detergent.

Poison Ivy Treatment: If you are exposed to poison ivy and you have a reaction, simply shower with Fels Naptha to remove any resin left on the skin and it will help to dry up the rash as well.

To clean your shower, rub a non-abrasive scouring sponge with a wet bar of Fels Naptha and start cleaning. It will take a little hard work the first time you use it but it will be a breeze after that.

Washing with Fels Naptha can greatly reduce the itching and discomfort from bug bites. Though it is NOT a hand soap, it can cut even the grimiest of messes. Wash hands with Fels Naptha to remove ink, grease, or a variety of other nasty stains. Again, remember that this can be a skin irritant and should be used carefully and only after reading the warning label on the soap.

To clean paint brushes, simply drag the wet brush through a lathered bar of Fels Naptha and work in. Rinse well with warm water. The brushes stay soft and supple using this method.

Spring and Fall Lawn Tonic

*1 cup of fels soap solution 1 flat beer, 4 ounces of liquid dish soap, household ammonia and a 20 gallon hose-end sprayer. (*Fels soap solution is made by shaving 1/2 bar of Fels Naptha Soap into a quart of very hot water to dissolve. Add 4 ounces of liquid dish soap as an emulsifier. You can store the solution until needed. Shake well before use.) Mix the 1 cup Fels solution, 1 can of beer in the sprayer. Fill the remainder of sprayer with ammonia. For spring and fall garden spraying, add 2 oz of molasses.

Spray aphids with 3 tablespoons grated Fels Naptha Soap dissolved in 1 gallon of hot water. Mix well and let cool. Spray as needed.

Insect Control: Prepare Fels Naptha Solution first. (Solution - shave 1 inch of Fels Naptha bar in a nylon stocking and place it into a gallon of boiling water along with 4 oz. liquid dish soap(Ivory). Store as needed and shake well before use. It will have a gel-like consistency.) Mix 1 cup of Fels Naptha Solution with 1 cup antiseptic mouthwash (mint flavored if nematodes are a problem) and 1 cup chewing tobacco juice. Spray with a 20-gal hose-end sprayer with a golf ball in it to keep mixture mixed. Follow-up with an application of Dursban or Diazinon, if needed.

For Black-spot fungus on roses: Make the Fels Naptha Solution by shaving 1 inch of Fels Naptha bar into a nylon stocking and placing it into a gallon of boiling water along with 4 ounce of liquid dish soap (Ivory). This will keep nicely and you can use it as needed. It will have a gel-like consistency so mix well before using. For the black-spot fungus, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon of Fels naptha solution and 1 gallon of water. Spray as needed.

IMPORTANT***** In recent years soap manufacturers have added degreasers and antibacterial ingredients to their products. These are VERY harmful to your plants and most likely will burn or kill them. When a home gardening technique calls for liquid dish soap be very careful that you use only Ivory or Fels Naptha Solution. You can also use the original liquid lemon type detergent which has no additives, just be careful that it does not contain a degreaser or is antibacterial.

Fels Naptha Soap is a fantastic stain remover and pre-treater. It works especially well on oil-based stains. Just rub the stain with a wet bar of Fels Naptha Soap. Let it sit for a while and launder as usual. It works great on baby clothes which have formula stains.

* For chocolate smudge on clothes, rub the stain with Fels Naptha Soap and let sit in your filled washer with 20 Mule Team Borax for 30 minutes. Launder as usual.

* Thoroughly wash all clothing including hats, gloves coats in Fels Naptha Soap to prevent an outbreak of poison ivy. Poison Ivy resin can remain on your clothes for over 1 year. Washing with Fels Naptha will eliminate the resin from your clothing.

* To remove Halloween makeup from clothing, simply work a little Fels Naptha into the stain and launder as usual. It may take a repeat washing to completely remove the stain.

* To clean white canvas tennis shoes, simply work the Fels Naptha Soap into a lather and use a soft brush to work into the canvas. Launder as usual without chlorine bleach.

* To remove old stains on colored clothes, make a solution of 2 cups warm water and 1/2 cup white vinegar. Pour on stain. Let soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Rinse well and work in Fels Naptha Soap. Launder as usual.

My daughter broke out with poison ivy last week.We have been using that clear stuff. It was going away slowly this morning she had a new spot appear and kept complaining the gel wasn't taking the itch away. After what I read here I grabbed my bar which is a different brand but has the same ingredients and created a good lather put it on and she said it finally stopped itching .Who knew?? School starts monday I'll try anything to get rid of it! I'll let you know how it looks tomorrow.

I Love my Fels Naptha Soap. I purchased my first bar--just for looks, cuz its so old fashioned looking in its wrapper.
One day- I used it on an old dishcloth that was in storage in a barn outside--it was all covered in mildew & mold. I intended to throw it out, but figured I'd try to wash it first using the soap bar & my regular detergent. It got every last bit of stains & stink out. The tablecloth was good to use on the dinner table.
I believe I originally got the fels Naptha Soap bar at Cracker Barrell. I think its on lower shelves. Its about $1.59 or so.:)

My father used this soap most of his life. He was 81 when the died. He used to use to bathe with it after working outside. It has a real nice lather. It's an old-fashion lye soap. I still use it today when working around weeds and for laundry stains. You can't beat the price. Here's the link to Dial Corp: http://www.dialcorp.com/index.cfm?page_id=47 They do still sell it along with another oldie called Octagon. Octagon comes in bar and liquid for dishes and is reasonably priced.

Ewww, ok, I know I just recently posted on this not that long ago...but I just had to comment on this soap again. My dog ....ate something really disgusting out of my bathroom garbage can last week. He ended up on our bed, and decided that it was as good a place as any to "Throw up".. Ewwwww talk about gross. Anyways, I thought I was gonna have to throw out the vintage Chenille bedspread that I had at the foot of the bed. I rubbed the Fels-Napatha soap all over the bedspread....a rather large area, and ran it through the wash. all the stains came out!

(footnote!)Bluey's lucky to be alive...no toxic shock syndrome; he ate and passed, about 5 tampons. We now keep our garbage in the cabinet under the sink!
