Additional serious injuries to children reported following the March 31, 2006 recall announcement of Magnetix Magnetic Building Sets have prompted the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Mega Brands America, Inc. (“Mega Brands”) (the new owner of Rose Art Industries, Inc.) to announce an expanded recall. In excess of 4 million units are involved. The recall includes all sets, except newer Magnetix sets sold since March 31, 2006, that are age-labeled 6+ and sets that contain the following caution label:
“CAUTION: Do not ingest or inhale magnets.
Attraction of magnets in the body may cause
serious injury and require immediate medical care.”

I am all for this recall, my daughter almost choked to death on one of the magnetic balls, I thank the Lord that he had his hand upon her that day.

My friends child was taken to the ER cause he thought it would be "cool" to pretend to have a nose ring. The magnets connected together very tightly through the inside of his nose. When he tried to get them out (one in each nostrel) he ended up shoving them further and further. By the time he told mom you could hardly see them. The ER doc thought they were going to have to do surgery to get them out becasue the magnets were sooooo strong they could not pry them apart. Fortunatlly an intern who was still taking science classes came up with a way to remove the magnets and the boy is fine. Those things are DANGEROUS!!
Dawnrowe, I am very glad to hear your daughter is ok after her ordeal with them.

Thank you very much, yes, she is fine......but immediately they went in the garbage can.
She can remember every second of that day, and she says boy mom, you sure did squeeze my belly hard.

I must admit, when I first heard about this recall my first thought was "why did the parents let children that were too young play with these". However, I just read an article in the Chicago Tribune that explained the whole situation. The parents of the 20 month old that died from swallowing them tried to be very careful, not allowing him in the room while the older child was playing with them and they made sure that he picked them all up after playing with them. The problem was that the small magnets were falling out of the plastic pieces and got hidden in the carpeting (which the parents weren't aware of). The company knew about all of this and didn't inform the public of the defect. Several cases had been reported about this problem previously. Other children were injured, but luckily no others died. This is just one sad situation. Now that I have heard the facts, I feel bad about my first thoughts on this recall.
