How to Qualify

The process to qualify for Lifeline Service depends on the State you live in. In general, you may qualify if...

1. You already participate in other State or Federal assistance program such as Federal Public Housing Assistance, Food Stamps and Medicaid.
OR
2. Your total household income is at or below 135% of the poverty guidelines set by your State and/or the Federal Government.
AND
3. No one in your household currently receives Lifeline Service through another phone carrier.
4. You have a valid United States Postal Address. In order for us to ship you your free phone you must live at a residence that can receive mail from the US Post Office. Sorry, but P.O. Boxes cannot be accepted.

In addition to meeting the guidelines above you will also be required to provide proof of your participation in an assistance program, or proof of your income level.

They had programs like this in almost all states. There used to be drop offs at local cell phone store places where you can give your old cell phone to abused women or to family shelters. I think anyone can get a cell phone just to have 911 on it without the service of a phone plan. I think they said all phone if is not on a service still can dial in 911.

I think this is a great program for the people who might really need a cell phone and can not afford it... Not all people will qualify. looks like they have it set up so people can not abuse the program.

People will get phones that are made for this program. so it might have the words SafeLink on it. so it might be a cheapy looking phone. or old recycled phones that are out of date. but still can get text (SMS) and voicemail etc... I doubt they would make new phones and redesign them for this program. so I think it is recycled phones and they reformated them all for this program.

almost every 2 years they come out with new phones and everyone seems to get a new cell phone every 2 years anyway it seems. i hardly seen anyone with the same phone for over 2 years.

So that is why I think it is going to be those old phones, and used phones. some used phones are still useable. then there are lots of new phones that are out of date.

I think this topic should be sticky... great info to pass along to people if they are in need of a cell phone. or make a new topic for Governments Handouts...
