Ok I'm helping a friend with her pc it has window xp on it. Ok the is she had mcAfee current and dial up. She switched to this company called sprocket who offered dsl. They also offered a virus protection package called I believe micro trend.
We uninstalled the mcaffee then installed the micro trend and it says it up and running.Well the pc started acting up so I had her check to make sure she was scanning daily apparently it wasn't.She started pulling several virus and quarantined quite a bit and had over 20 threats.
So I had her scan repeatedly and it has gotten better. so here's problem #1 when she goes into her yahoo mail account she can no longer view pictures sent to her.did she have a virus in her yahoo and it got quarantined she deleted it and now somethings missing. I hope this makes sense.
Secondly if she did have a virus in yahoo if we completely uninstall all of yahoo then reinstall will the virus be gone?
One more thing her pc I it comes up saying micro soft keeps popping up telling her there is a problem with her virus protection and wants to sell her virus guard.I feel like there's something on the pc that's not recognizing the microtrend and need to be turned off but don't know where to look.Any ideas on any of this would be helpful. thanks! :)

that's interesting because my pc is new barely 3 months. it came with free mcaffee well when it first was expiring I hadn't bought in yet and i let it expire for about 3 days.My pc ran horrible I kept thinking I had picked up a virus bus hadn't been nowhere to get one. you may be on to something that we haven't looked into. thanks

You don't need to buy virus software. Use AVG! All of my computer buddies recommend it:
http://free.avg.com/
Uninstall all of the others first though.

I know and its what I have always used. but.... being I spent what I feel was a lot ( cost me two weeks worth of work thats alot for me) for a new computer I wanted the best virus protection I could get. So this time I did buy but in 2 yrs when this machine is becoming obsolete I'll go to the free stuff because it always did fine but I think I have like coverage for everything. :)

My friends say AVG is better because there are less hackers trying to overcome AVG. The hackers try to get past McAfee, Norton, etc. because of the name. If you paid for it, might as well use it though.

here is the thing about Mcafee that they don't tell you...when you uninstall mcafee it doesn't actually uninstall all the way...it leaves pieces, so to speak, hanging around...and when you install another anti - virus essentially what happens then is that they are working against each other...
anyway, what you need to do is contact mcafee...they have something you download and put on your computer that will completely wipe out mcafee...it's free...
once that is done, then the trend micro should work fine...you may have to reinstall it though...
as far as if you have a virus in yahoo...uninstalling and reinstalling will most likely not get rid of it...try the other first and try to get an antivirus running...that way you will know for sure if you have a virus...
also, trend micro is a good anti-virus...so if you've already purchased it, then I wouldn't worry about getting anything else

Ok so heres where I'm at with this computer problem. I went over and played with her pc for several hours. The only problem i find is it has Antivirus 2009 on it and I don't know how to get rid of it. I googled it and kinda get the feeling thats the virus.I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with this and how did you get it to uninstall.I found this one site called bleepingcomputer.com does anyone know anything about it?

ok, antivirus 2009 is malicious...essentially it is a trojan that has infected the computer...and that's what's causing all those popups and notifications that she's getting...so, don't click on anything else that comes up and don't go anywhere it tells you to go to download stuff to get rid of it...that stuff is malicious too...you need to download Windows defender from the Microsoft website here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
that should be able to get rid of it...let me know if you need any help ok...

hey Chris :)
there is a difference between the two of them...CCleaner helps you "clean up" stuff that is on your computer (temp internet files, registry cleanup, etc), it's good to help optimize your computer performance but is not intended to protect you from spyware like Defender...W Defender is setup to catch any spyware (hopefully) before it gets in...and then of course if it does then it detects it and gets rid of it...much like an anti-virus...
I would say it would be a good idea to have both...
just an example:
this is what I put on my hubby's computer that is working well for him...
System Mechanic (similar to CCleaner) also has a firewall
Trend Micro (anti-virus)
Windows Defender
system clean up, firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware...those are the essentials...sometimes it seems like a full time job just to keep up with all of that...;) I swear sometimes I think my husband spends more time maintaining his computer than actually using it for it's intended purpose...LOL...

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and I havent had a problem, I had norton before McAfee and Trend and they all slowed the computer down and didnt really catch everything. I have used the free one now for years and I like it.
