Hello SS Pals. We are about three weeks into what was initially diagnosed wrong (DS has asthma and it was diagnosed as being "asthmatic bronchitis") by an ER doc, but has since been identified as Pertussis.
Yes, our 17 year old, with all immunizations, has a severe case of "Whooping Cough" and the only real treatment (he had antibiotics and sterioids at first when diagnosed wrong) is time. We use a vaporizor, he drinks a lot of fluids, sleeps sitting up, uses a special expectorant, ect... but other than that time is the only remedy.
It is so scary and so hard on him. He coughs so hard and gasps for breath (the whoop) as the phlegm is so thick it blocks his airway and these "attacks" occur throughout the night and all day, leading to vomiting most often. His head hurts so bad from the horrid coughing spells.
He has missed four school days, and only made it through one hour today. Today (this AM) was the worst ever, DH was going to call 911 as the episode was so severe and lengthy but thank God, he did get his breath. This is so hard to watch as a parent, as there is nothing but comfort that we can do.
Please, please, please pray for him as it seems to be getting worse (the # of episodes per day has decreased, however, the severity of each has increased). His lung X-Ray is clear as of yet, thankfully it has not developed into pneumonia, and prayerfully it will not.
Please pray that his lungs remain clear, and that the coughing spells/breathing blockage lessen/go away, and that nothing bad happens during the spells. The Doctor said (we have had several visits) this is generally a 10 week ordeal. :(
Thank you all, we appreciate your prayers, positive thoughts, and concern!:)

Poor thing :( I will be praying for your son to get well very soon. I know a little of what he's going through. I have asthama and just recently had to go to the ER myself, for it. So I know what it's like not being able to breathe, and gasping for breathe. Hang in there! :)

Oh dear, your son has my prayers for a speedy recovery. As a parent it is always hard on us to see our children sick. May God speed his recovery. Please keep us posted. HUGS.

That has to be the scariest feeling in the world when you can't get your breath. I hope and pray he is feeling better soon and is on the mend. Prayers for you and your entire family as well.

Prayers to your son for a quick recovery. I know how scary this is as my niece and nephew had this also,(even after they were immunized) and my daughter was exposed to it. I know for them it lasted a very long time, and yes, it is very frightening to be a witness to it. Take care of yourself also. {{{HUGS}}}

I know what you're going through. When my son was that small he had asthma and chronic croup. We had to rush him to the hospital one night because he stopped breathing altogether for several minutes. But the ER fixed him up with a nebulizer treatment and then periodically we'd have to go the steroid route for a few days to open him up when the croup came back. Fortunately, he's 17 now and grew out of all his respitory issues by the time he was 6 or 7. Hopefully this will be the case for you and your family. I'll keep you in my prayers!

We are sending a big THANK YOU to ALL of you wonderful SS friends praying for us. :)
DS is now over 4 weeks into this and yesterday/last night/this morning was one of the worst during this entire illness! :( He is home from school again today and we are heading back to the Doctor.
Prayerfully, it is perhaps a cold that has manifested itself on top of the Pertussis and not pneumonia or anything as serious. He has lost about 6 pounds, as he vomits nearly everything back up during the coughing spells. He is miserable and looks so bad through his eyes. He is sleep challenged and what sleep he does get (or tries to get) is still attained by having to sit up (no lying down).
I feel like my world is spinning at times... first and foremost I am so worried about our son! I don't sleep well, as I get up for every "spell" with him. I hate not being able to "fix this"... there are no meds to help nor anything we can do (besides the expectorant and vaporizer). I have missed six days of college (today will be 7), and Algebra is my challenge and of course, one of the classes I have this quarter is Algebra, and I have not passed my last two tests as I have been absent from class and tutoring. I am trying hard on my own to get it, but it is so difficult. DH helps when he can, but he is the "breadwinner" and is gone a lot working. I could'never have imagined that this illness could be so bad and I even had a baby sister with it (I was 14). It is simply horrible. :(
Please continue to pray for his healing and for my family as a whole... we really appreciate your well wishes and prayers!

I am so sorry your family is going through this. I can't even imagine how tough it must be. My heart goes out to your son.
Perhaps you should go talk to your college. Surely they have some sort of hardship exemption. Trying to learn Algebra during all of this has got to be impossible!

Hi SS Friends! :) I wanted to send you an update on our son, as well as again thanking you for your prayers!
DS is several weeks into this. He is better, but far from well. The cough is still there, and apparently will be for quite some time. Two chest X-Rays are clear (no pneumonia)! He is still coughing alot, however, it is not "taking his breath" like it was thankfully! He is still vomiting with the coughing episodes, although it is better (the number of times per day has lessend). He lost about 8 pounds with that happening, but thankfully did not become dehydrated. We see the brightness in his eyes once again :D so that is a really good thing! He still doesn't have much spunk however.
DH and I are currently in the throes of it now. :( We were given the "Z-Pack" at the first signs (he and I showed symptoms about two days apart) of illness, so that can help lessen the spread to others. Thankfully, as sick as we both are, we have nothing compared to what DS had! I thank God for that, and hope it stays as is... this old lady doesn't think she could live through what he did... I have never seen anything quite like it!
Please remember us in your prayers, and again, thank you! Kimberly & Family

I wanted to send a BIG THANK YOU out to all of my SS friends that kept our DS in your prayers! :)
It took about 2&1/2 months for him to recover from this illness (he still has a coughing spell every now and again... sporadic and not at all like the ones before in severity). God is wonderful! :)
We really appreciated all the prayers and positive messages! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
