I'd like to recommend a South Dakota author, Kathleen Taylor.

Her series features Tory Bauer, a middle aged waitress in a restaurant in a small South Dakota community. She as a person evolves and there are changes in the series so best to read in order:
Funeral Food, *** and Salmonella, Hotel South Dakota, The Mourning Shift and Cold Front.

In the books, there are regular members of the community, that we can all identify from our own lives and some humor as well. Tory lives with her deceased husband's cousin who is quite the ***pot and the cousin's son, Presley, whom the cousin claims was fathered by "The King". There are some laughs but also great, well written mysteries.

I personally, have met Kathleen Taylor as she spoke at two of our mystery readers meetings. She is warm, friendly and very laid back. She certainly hasn't let her celebrity status go to her head.
