View Full Version : Birth Control considered an ABORTION?!

So I didn't know that this was happening but the Bush administration is trying to change the meaning of "abortion" to include birth control AND emergency contraception to rape victims! I had no idea that this was happening. I could not imagine what would happen if this passed. Your insurance would no longer cover your birth control and many girls would not be able to afford it anymore. What would happen them? I don't think that this should pass because we have the right to decide if we want to take birth control or not. It isn't abortion if the baby is not made yet. They want to require 11 year old girls to get the HPV shot before school, but they want to tell us birth control is like having an abortion?! Am I the only one that thinks this is a STUPID thing to try and pass? Does the Bush Administration not have better things to do??
Also here is a petition you can sign to try and help this not pass if you are against this being passed. http://pol.moveon.org/contraception/
(Hope this is in the right spot. I want other people's opinion on it so didn't know if I should put it here or in health.)

So i searched a little more and this is what i found:
Laws Could Consider Birth Control Equal to Abortion
By KSPR News
Story Created: Aug 1, 2008
Story Updated: Aug 1, 2008
A new proposal could put birth control on the same level as abortion.
In a confidential draft, the Bush Administration defines abortion as any prescription of drugs and any procedure that terminates a human life, including birth control pills, IUD’s, and morning after pills.
The laws would protect health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions or prescribing contraceptives.
If their employers punish them, the federal government would deny the health center federal money.
The plan also would allow insurers who receive federal money to drop their coverage of contraceptives if they want to.

I don't think that this would stop women from getting birth control. There are generic brands out there that are cheaper than some insurances. I don't think we really have to be concerned with this passing.

Ya but they are saying now that doctors don't have to give a prescription for it if they are not ok with it. And I can only take certain types of birth control and they don't have generic. It wouldn't be horrible if it passed but really what is the point of them doing that?

I am sure that not all doctors would agree with this at all and would still prescribe it to you. I think this is way out there for the Bush administration and it hasn't got much hype. if they are that concerned about it being abortion then they need to make abortion illegal which i know will never happen.

Planned Parenthood offers many affordable birth control options. There should NEVER be the excuse that someone could not afford it.
This will not pass. Statistics prove the communities who do not offer birth control have a higher teen pregnancy rate. Not to mention STD rates also increase as well the number of miscarriages. It is just a domino effect that no one would want to see.
And in reality this will have to pass the House and the Senate. I just do not see it happening.

I agree with Brandy!!
Our government would rather give out birth control than to support unwanted/unplanned pregnancies!! It's cheaper for them to hand out birth control then to put these mothers and their babies on welfare so I believe this WILL never happen in my lifetime!!!

I checked on Snopes and Truth or Fiction and I cannot find anything. I think this is a bunch of BS, don't you think if this was really an issue that it wouldn't be all over the news? not to mention the women's rights groups out there.

Agreed! I get national and state issues on e-mail everyday since I am a registered lobbyist. I have never seen anything like this.
And I really do not think this bill would stand a chance anyways.

i just don't see how something like this would ever pass considering abortion is legal...
and if doctors start choosing not to give birth control prescriptions, i am sure that planned parenthood will always still make birth control available...and it's cheap...
i agree though...saying the birth control pill is the same as an abortion is absolutely ridiculous...
edit: here is the article that apparently started all of this...from the new york times http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/washington/15rule.html?ex=1373860800&en=0eb76de0ec6ae964&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink
not that i believe a word of what the new york times has to say...but seems to me from reading this that there are some things that were very misinterpreted...who knows
