View Full Version : I have a possum in my house!

No, you read right...I have a LIVE possum in my house  - really my basement (YUCK!) but still it is IN my house!
OK, I wake up to the fire alarm going off (this thing is hooked up to the electrical system and there is no shut off- so when it "trips" it goes off for 10-15 minutes!) the kids get up, I get up...DH, who is a VET is gone to work. BTW, DH LOVES to leave garage door open so cats can go in and out- I keep telling him other things are going to come in...my BIG fear are snakes! The one weekend we went away he left the door open a 'crack' a bear was in our backyard! He said it wouldn't go into our house...yeah, right!
Ok, back to story- anyway I tell the girls to make sure there is no fire...Emily goes down the basement and says, "Mom- something is saying 'Bummer' down here"...I go down and look into the garage part of the basement that is still dark -The system was saying "fire" "fire" I turned on the light and a huge possum was looking a me and Emily and we were looking at it. Then it scattered behind the plywood and Emily screamed. We all ran upstairs grabbing as many cats as we could.
Meanwhile, the alarm is still blarring- I am calling my husband- he is not answering...no why would he answer...this thing is bigger than a small dog! I'm serious- I have lived in NE PA for a LONG time and the ONLY thing I do NOT like is snakes...everything else I can handle. I have NEVER seen a possum this big! We go back downstairs grab the cat food, water (my husband moved it all downstairs a couple weeks ago) and the rest of the cats except for the 2 spazy ones that I know we can't catch....and put water down there for them.
Alarm finally stops and I get throught to my DH who tells me I'm a whimp and I need to open the door and just hit the boards and it will run out- yeah, that worked...I didn't even open the door and it started moving up towards the stairs and the girls...I was right next to it (that's how I know how big it is) YUCK! Back upstairs we went!
And the most 'beautiful' thing is I am afraid it will come uptairs because my husband has holes in the floor from basement to the 'old kitchen' that were never repaired...possums can climb! We covered themup the best we could but he/she can still squeeze through the little spaces.
I was hearing noises in the basement through the old vent(in the old part of the house)- that was comforting...I thought I knew it was still down there...but now it's too quiet.
I'm going to kill him when he gets home  he's big thing was "just get a broom and chase it out" I told him " You let it in YOU get it out!" He tried to tell the kids the same timg they told him off too!
Any ideas? On either how to get a possum out or make your husband miserable?

I would call the fire dept and ask them, they may be able to help you out, I mean help that possum OUT.

Well I would find some way to get back at your husband for leaving the door open. I can't believe it is in there. There should be some company you can call for them to come get it out. Look in the phone book maybe?! Do you know the number to call to get them to come pick up dogs and stuff cause they should be able to handle it.

Dont you have "animal control" ?
Your city or county should be able to handle this shouldnt they ?
edit*
that reminds me... the other day I was in the laundry room and I heard the cat bowls outside clanking together. I figured it was my outside cat, Fiona. So I opened the door and right there on the steps was a HUGE possum! Not uncommon for our area though. I still screamed. lol

2 weeks ago we had 5 baby opossums in our basement!!!!! I heard screaching and I thought it was the bats!!!!(last summer we had a couple bats:eek: ) and so I had to wake Daniel up to get the bats out and when he opened the basement door!!....he said. " Honey- its not a bat..its a baby opossum!" They were so cute looking but we had to get them out. He coaxedit into a box and let it go outside and all of a sudden the Momma came from around the front of our house and the little one climbed on her back and she turned and started walking away and we followed to see where she ws going. Right under our front porch!!!! So we knew where the little ones were sorta coming in at then. 5 days later of retrieving them from our basement we haven't heard them again-Daniel made sure the last time he took them out he put them in our backyard away from the house hoping to deter Momma from bringing them back so close!!

Please be careful-possums can carry the rabies virus. A few years ago when hubby and I lived in an apartment complex, we saw a bunch of kids waiting for the school bus. They were 'playing' with something in the middle of our street, and I thought they had a remote control car-hubby looked and realized it was a possum! It was going in circles, just walking over and over in circles. Being from the 'neck of the woods' in PA, we knew that it could be infected with rabies-hubby immediately called 911 and within minutes, fire and police were there. Everyone was shocked by it, including the police/fire--we were in the middle of Baltimore County!
I hope you are able to say goodbye to your 'friend' soon!

I read online that opossums are one of the very few wild animals who rarely carry rabies!! I found this info on Wikipedia along with many other sites. They can get rabies from being bit by another animal that has it- but in general they do not carry rabies.

Oh my gosh, Nancy! I'm staying tuned to hear the end of THIS story, & how your big brave husband got the possum out! We have possums around here (SW Oregon) & they give me the creeps if I see them in the yard... I'd totally freak if one was even within 10 feet of the house.

Possum Pot Pie
1 cup glazed huckleberries
3 shots gin or moonshine
1 possum
---if roadkill: make jambalaya
---if caught: proceed with recipe
1 pie crust
sliced carrots & cabbage to taste
Cover a pan (or any implement you can put in a fire) with the bottom of your pie crust, and place the possum in it. Add the huckleberries and carrots, and shred the cabbage over it. Close up the pie and bake until the neighbors' dogs come sniffing around to see what the wonderful smell is, or until the fire department arrives (whichever comes first). Remove pie from fire/oven, slice, and enjoy.

Ok, sorry for the wait- we just got back from eyedoctor's appointments.
Possum Update (beep, beep, beep, beep beep...or insert news music here)
Colin got home and could NOT find the possum! The F bomb flew! And flew...and flew as did things in the basement. He yelled at the possum he could not find, yelled at the kids that would not help him- since they do NOT want to get rabies shots...my girls know better ;) They have heard about Daddy cutting of the head of an animal to send it away for testing and seen Daddy have to go for rabies shots- NOPE! They aren't going in the basement! Then he told them (I was in the shower at this point) they would starve tonight, my arm/wrist is killing me- I might have a ruptured disc, bone spur or pinched nerve and have to go for MRI on Thursday- because he won't be making supper he will be catching a possum!
I get out of the shower- they tell me this and I get on the phone and let him have it! Since he was already gone and he said the possum was probably in the air conditioning vents.
He is on the board at the Humane Society- they won't know what to do with this...Animal control up here (he said) is ONLY for outdoors...I told him I don't know how much I believe that. And he told me the only way to get rid of it is to call a exterminator...I told him he has tonight and then I'm calling tommorrow! He's yelling that I just want to spend money...ummm, NO I just want to keep my family safe!
But now I don't know if I want to sleep here tonight- if it is not gone...I think I'm going to a hotel with the kids. He doesn't get it....ARRGH!!!
Should I call him and say exterminator or me in a hotel?

Bless your heart. I'm sorry for making light of the situation since you are obviously truly distressed by the opossum. I grew up on a farm so this was a usual occurance to us. Sorry.
Here is a link to a Pro Wildlife removal service. I believe you will find they are the ones for your area.
Good luck!

No, I liked your pie ;) However, be have been having a bit of rabies up here in certain animals (not saying this one is- but I'm not taking any chances either) Thank you for the link...I actually looked these people up under "pest control" a little bit ago.
Have to go and get something to eat.

OK, I get home with the kids...they had a craft class/movie night (movie didn't work...must be my fault today!) I get home at 9pm DH has the garage door closed stuff outside...not too much- figured he must have got it- NOPE! He is taking tons of stuff in his SUV to the office to be thrown out so we could find the thing.
He's to the point he doesn't believe we saw it! So I was Pi$$ED and went down there (what he wanted me to do) and go a flashlight..and started banging on things- THEN he tells me he found evidence it WAS there- I guess he put candy making chocolate down there (that I use sometimes) and it ate it!
So we (he, me and the girls are down there with flashlights and poles, brooms,etc.0 and banging around and out jumps Bella our black cat...the kids yell- hopefully she went outside. Then we are doing it some more then Colin opens up an old cupboard out jumps a big white thing ...I yell, the kids yell- it's our cat Twinkle...my oldest DD almost hit her with the broom! But she saw her black spots in time...I hope she made it out the door in time- we are trying to get them all out- I want to call pest control tommorrow. Colin thinks it's either in the air conditioning OR in a hole in the concrete ...EEWWW!
Now he just came up and told me Twinkle is still down there freaked out- she NEVER leaves the basement - unless I'm home alone and the door is open. :(
I have to go down to see if I can get her. The drama......

Oh man!!!! They also give off a very unpleasant odor(rotted smell) when they feel threatened. Daniel found that if he went down in the basement and was very quiet for like 20 mins and didn't move- thats when the babies would come out. Maybe you could try just being so quiet and pull up a chair in the basement and just wait. Eventually- it will come out when it thinks you are gone!!

I have a grey tabby that I used to let go outside and one night I saw her on the porch wanting in. Let me add, my outdoor light was blown at the time....well imagine how high I jumped when I went to pick her up only to realize it was a darn possum! That thing hissed and I about broke my neck trying to get back in the house. Then I was afraid to come out thinking he was waiting for me.
There is a lady who lives down the road who has them as pets! She is a wildlife rehabilitator and she keeps them in the house raising them to return to the wild. She finds many as babies that survived after the mother was killed. They even use a litter box! She is clean as a pin! Gives me the "hebegeebees" just thinking about it. Once, she had pictures of them taken dressed up for Christmas! I am all about loving animals but I am scared of possums!~

The first time I saw Opossum I was on my way to work, as I was going down the street I saw this "thing" sitting up in the middle of the street, blood coming out of it's mouth and breathing heavy, I stopped and stared at this thing, I had never seen anything like this. I got to work and told my boss I saw the biggest rat sitting up in the middle of the street, she laughed and said that was not a rat it was a Opossum. They are not attractive at all!

You can try mothballs, they don't like the smell. Yes your house will smell like your grandmothers, but its only for the short term. This also works great with snakes, mice and rabbits. Good luck. If you don't want to take the smelly route, try your local humane society. The ones around here will take all the training that they can get. Or try the local wildlife agency.

NO...it is not out...possum, opossum whatever you want to call it. I still have two cats downstairs afraid to come out :( - I thought it was just Twinkle but Bella was stupid enough to say in there too! Now they are both where Colin thinks the possum is in the air vent...Bella is crying- I'm ready to cry. I'm trying to get them to come up the stairs with food and they are sitting onthe stupid air vet or under it (Twink is under it and silent)
We have a guy with traps coming on Friday to fix the vents and catch the possum, I think  ...I know he's supposably going to try to catch the Possum- this is a do-it-all guy my husband knows. I am ready to call. The professionals tommorrow- at the movies, when I'm there with the kids and I know DH is home and just have them 'show up' hee hee (insert evil laugh here) he won't know what hit him!
Ok..so that is possum update...I'm going to go sit at the top of my basement step now and call to the two stupid cats and see if they come...I just hope the opossum doesn't!

This JUST in!......
The possum was spotted. The possum was spotted. Yes, the possum WAS spotted by COLIN!!
In full view running on top of the old duct work in the basement...then it went into the duct work- where Nancy has been hearing it for the past couple days (but NOOOOOO, it couldn't be there! )
Now that my husband finally believes me he is bringing up the heavy bags of dog and cat food (like we couldn't do that the other day?) I can't do it because I am waiting for a MRI- possible ruptured disc in my neck :( ( long story for those of you that don't know)...don't be thinking I'm lazy!
Told him about the mothballs...he just looked at me weird  I might be getting those tommorrow..if anything they will be at the top of the stairs!
Again, the top of our news story- Colin has spotted the Possum! What will he do other than keep firing the F-bomb tune in tommorow...
'Night all! Thanks for asking!

we have lots of possums here ... they always scare me to death but you could try the possum in a trashcan trick...
If an opossum gets into your house or garage, it can be safely trapped by leaning an empty, tall kitchen trash can at a 30-45 degree angle against something the opossum can climb onto. Place cat food or ripe fruit at the bottom of the trash can. The opossum will be able to climb into the trash can but will not be able to get out

OK, the cats won't come up :( I sat for an hour at the stairs trying to get them to come up and all Bella did was cry at the other hole (we are remodeling...for only 4 years! AARGGH)
I got up early fed all the other cats (they go outside too) and put them outside. And started calling for the cats. The dog comes up- it raining here. I pen him in the living room with the couch, chairs, etc. he jumps over it twice! He's going on 13! So I put him outside, in the rain...(sprinkling then).
I go and sit at the top of the stairs and call to the cats- DD is still sleeping- older one is at friend's house...they come up only if I'm there and NO one else. Nothing. So in the crappy, pulled apart dirty room I get a shopping bag and sit down. Don't want the possum coming up! I wait, and wait, and wait....Nothing.
I hear somthing...it's...the possum! Dirty, fithy,$*&^%$#@%^&*&&^%^$%#@@$%^&&&&^%$#@@#%^&&*&&^%%$###$^&&****^$%#@%&^(&*^$$#%$^&*(*(^$#%&^&^*$@#&^*(, thing! It's moving all aroung the basement!
I can take NO more! I call DH...I tell him I can't get the cats up I tried every trick I now have...they are not coming I am calling in the professionals! he told me he "almost had" the possum this morning. I said "Really?" He said "Yeah, I hit him with a broom- but then I didn't realize it wasn't the BIG, heavy broom so he got away" So I asked my VERY smart DH (he really is VERY smart- his IQ is amazing) what he was going to do after he hit the possum with the broom. Long silence. I said, that even IF he does get him out won't it come back? Then he got mad. I didn't care.
I hung up and called who I should have called day one. Now, unforunately, the people I called, that deal with pets don't deal with possums- so I had to turm to a special number they gave me (as my huband said "they won't get back to you right away") The answering machine said 24-72 hours! These are the same people I looked up here via the link! :(
So now I have two cats without food or water since Moday in my basement with a Possum  a wet dog on the porch with my DD (who is not wet) and today I will be taking 4 girls to see Wall e in the rain after lunch then for shopping...at least I won't be with the possum!

well nancy, with the luck you're having with this i would probably get the biggest trashcan i could find :D but seriously a tall kitchen garbage can should work or one that you use for outdoor trash if you have one of those...the plastic is so slippery that the possum can't get a foothold to climb out...
maybe you need to hit DH with the broomstick and knock some sense into him

This happened like about 3 years ago when we lived in a shack of a house that we were remodeling on family property. We have since moved I had posted it on our 4x4 web site:
So I'm surfing the board and I look up only to see a BAT, yes that's right a BAT flying around the livingroom. It flies into the bathroom of all places (go figure, that were all the other creatures go to too.) and I lock it in there. Then like 5 min goes by and I see a bat flying around the living room. Not sure if it's the same one or a different one I'm to chicken to go look in the bathroom. There's a small gap between the door and floor. Gawd I really hate this house.
I hate BATS. After I signed off the Bat that was flying in the living room flew into the laundry room so I was able to lock it in there. I hate bats. When Aaron got home there was not bat to be found in the bathroom or the laundry room. Do you know that I hate bats? Now I hope no one thinks that I just made up the fact that there was a Bat/bats flying around the livingroom today. I hate BATS and all the other creatures that make there way into the bathroom!!!

OK, my friends we are going on Day #4 of Possum in Basement...
Yesterday, I called the 'Animal Wildlife Recovery, Inc.' (Pest Control people) left message...when I had two girls in car and going to pick up two more in a huge thunderstorm the man calls me on the cell  Emily answers it- I ask him to call Colin at the office since he will be home in a littel while...well, THAT doesn't work! He is on a horse call...doesn't have his cell phone on him, guy leaves two messages on home phone- DH NEVER checks that...why would anyone check their own answering machine? Staff doesn't give him message (supposably) ARRGHHH!!!!
So, I get home at 10:30pm with my girls...to find seven messages never checked by my husband. TWO of them being the pest control people! I was so  **&^$%$&^^&^&$$#^*(()##$@^%&*()_(_%#$@#$&) ...I can't even write what I said...oh, then he locked us out of the house too and went to bed! (He had an asthma attack in the basement) He set up a trap and two or three garbage can traps.. He'll get him. (yeah, right)
This morning, I caught one cat...Twinkle finally came up for me...for food! WOO- HOO! Bella looked, cried and took off back down stairs. But I got the white one with black spots!
So today I had to get up early for my MRI, I go for that- my Mom takes the girls out... we come home and I call the pest control guy again and apologize up down and sideways for my husabnd not calling him back and gave him all the numbers again- I thnk this guy is thinking "yeah, I'm going to waste my time on these people!"
Then I hear my older DD scream from the 'old' living room (we had three sories put onto our house and it is in contast remolding) - the possum is trying to come out of the old vent! She can see it- yep I can see it! I said, "Is there another one? This one looks smaller." it really did. Now the vent it moving I am pushing it back...Victoria is screaming and calling her father...this this isn't scared of us...only Colin! And it didn't like any traps or food in the traps! Finally, when she stops screaming it looks at us like "dam8, you need to let me in and feed me people!" and turns around and goes away...we then put the heaviest boxes (rubbermaid) in front of the vent that we have! And stuff in front of that! I don't want that thing in here!
I call DH and give him an earful- then tell him I have to go to other DD's doctor appointment and after that I am going shopping! And I don't care if this place looks like a sh8th0le...I am not going to stay here! He's gets mad at me...
Ok, I come home...he says "when John is coming tommorrow to take out the air anyway- I'm just going to do it early" gets mad at me again...goes downstairs smashes the airconditoning vents...and comes up with Bella! takes her to the office to 'hide' with Twinkle...they can be feed and scared together.
Two cats down now we just need the possum...kids think it is 'cute' (YUCK)...it was a little cute in the vent BUT I didn't want it in MY house! I swear I think there is more than one down there. The 'cute' one and the big one! (At least)
If my Dh let the only people that get possums out of your house go- I will be Pi$$ed!!!! I'll tell you one thing his price will go up ALOT more when he knows the thing is trying to get into our house!...and we NEED him now!
Ok, going to bed- I am sleep deprived...

OK...this Possum is smart- smarter than my husband! Maybe we should give the possum a doctorate!
It has not eaten out of any traps (I wonder if it can't get out of the ducts)...
John, my Dh's 'man' came over today to fix smoke alarms, air conditioning and I thought trap possum... I talked to him a bit. Then got in the shower. Got out he was gone. The girls said he talked on his cell phone and left  When I asked him what he did they said they didn't know but they asked him if he got the possum he said "Nope- you guys are on your own!" I called Colin. He said "He called me ...he looked at the alarms and hooked up one. We'll wait a couple days to see if that goes off." WHAT?!?! I COULD HAVE DONE THAT?!?! I said what about the possum? He said, "John said we have to catch it" I said "What happened to John is coming on Friday and he is going to take care of it!" Then he got mad at me. Told me he's sick of me telling him "off" (no, he's sick of me telling him that I'M RIGHT!)
Ok, then when Colin came home pi$$ed off at me he went into the basement possum came into the new vents- and is trying to come into the kitchen- he can't get in that way but we could all see him... Now I hear him back in the old vents trying to get in that way. ARRGH!
Now I just hear alot of movement down there...I hope it got out of the vent.
I have to leave- see the prayer section- going to put something there about DD...you can say one to get rid of the possum too, PLEASE!
Thanks!

Possum Update Day # 6
Ok, Possum is still in the vent in the kitchen trying to chew it's way out...I have a new phone book with all the OTHER pest control people that can do possums out ...just waiting for Colin to get home.
He comes home- goes into the basement. I hear the garage door open  Alot of cursing. I ask oldest DD to ask him if he wants me to call the pest control people that I looked up. She goes down. He tells he to get a broom...the other garage door goes up  I send youngest DD down with sneakers on to see what he is doing (my arm is killing me today)- before she gets there alot of screaming from oldest DD! Alot of banging -around more screaming- more banging- more cursing- more banging.
Youngest DD comes upstairs and says, "OK, the possum finally ran outside into the woods" I told her go downstairs and make sure her father shuts the doors! DH comes up and says, "The possum was stupid! Both doors are open and it would go out it kept running past the doors into the other corner!"
But youngest DD says it was "smaller" than when she first saw it. Dh said- "No kidding it hasn't had anything to eat for over 6 days!"
But it is GONE!! WOO- HOO!!!!! :D
Thank you everyone for possum advice...the little bugger never took to the traps (we had ripe fruit, cat food, etc. in all of them).
Now I can relax a bit in my 'dirty' house ;) since I haven't been home...

Thank goodness Nancy! Glad that the dirty thing is out of your basement and back in the woods. Though, after all the upset it's caused for you and your family, flattened on the road by a Kenworth would be even better :p
Yep, that way I would know it wouldn;t be back in my house! :p

Nancy I'm so glad to hear it's finally gone. We seem to keep getting mice. We moved out of the house withe the bat and now we get mice. I hate rodents!!!! I feel your frustration. The our mouse last year took 3 weeks to catch. The first year we were here it was a week. Our cat will catch them in the field across the street and bring them to us dead but when they are in the house he won't touch them... That is until a few weeks ago when he wouldn't let go of it til he ate it. I can't imagine a possum. I'm so glad to hear the good news. And Hopefully the Hubby learned his leason.. I'm sure you won't let him forget it anytime soon either. :D

No, I won't let him forget it! Girls won't either...he left the back door open yesterday- so the cats could go "in and out" and they had a fit! (Even though he was right there - it was funny!) Our cats like to bring us dead stuff and when he has the door open they bring it into the house YUCK! We had one mouse and one bird- thank God only that! Thank God both dead and thank goodness the cats dropped them into the 'old kitchen' (area we are remolding ..were they are fed) onto a plastic bag both times! (It was like- "Here Mom- we know you don't want to touch it and we aren't done with it yet!") Colin had the bag on the floor in that spot because we are having a water leaking problem with the pipes from the bathroom above and he wants to see if anything collects on the bag  to show his 'man' John...who hasn't been back yet!
I could start a soap opera (a boring one) "As the Stomach Churns"....
Thanks for the support!

we get home from the beach a day early. DH has to see some animals at the office...they are in need of him
So we walk into the front door and an awful smell hits us...like something died! YUCK! Now the girls have been there to feed the cats and they said nothing- one even took a nap on our couch on Saturday because she had a migraine.
Now DH starts looking for something...thinking "Did the cats bring something in here?" Youngest DD goes into the basement to find him with a broom and a box. She asked "What are you doing?" "Nothing!"he says. Yeah, right ...he only has possum # 2 in the box...that what was stinking. NO, it was not dead. It was still alive...I wonder if there are anymore down there?
Told him the one that looked in the vent was too little and "cute" (compared to the one that hissed at me)!
Best part of it was he wasn't going to tell me until DD caught him in the act of getting rid of it!
That is the possum update of today.....

Don't ya just love catching them in the act? Gosh, I hope that was the last one! I am sure you and your girls do to. Men, they love to try to pull one over on us girls...... I hate possum, we used to have them come up on the deck to eat the cats food. Not anymore, we don't feed them there now! Good Luck! Glad to have you home and back at SS!
