The U.S. election is only a few short months away. Just between us Startsamplers, I thought it would be neat to see how we all here will be voting this November, and for which party. Take the poll so we can get an idea on where the country stands.......via startsampling!

The most important thing is that this year, more than ever, people are getting involved and taking a real interest in our countires elections. Our younger generation is coming out in record numbers to support both sides of election and it is wonderful. No matter who wins this election, the one good thing that has happened is that our children are motivated now to get involved and educated themselves in the process and they are more likely to stay involved from here on out.

I voted. Like some others, I'm ready for this to be over - I'm tired of hearing all the "bad" publicity that is slung back and forth. We've known from day 1 who we were voting for, and the info that comes out just cements our choice. I must say though that I think sometimes it is a matter of chosing the lesser of two evils as I've heard some relatives say. Some things being talked about are just plain scary!

I watched the First Presidential and the VP debate and will be watching tonight as well. Tonights debate is a townhall debate in which all of the questions are from the audience and people online.

I've known since the primaries who I was voting for...I have lived in Illinois since 1994 and have been very familiar with Obama's record as a IL state senator, and as a result I worked for his opponents's campaign in the 2004 US Senate election. I've watched what he has done since being in the Senate and thats partly why there is a McCain/Palin sign in my yard, as well as signs for local and state candidates.

I also just signed on for another 2 year term as an election judge.

Its a long, busy day...the polls here open at 6:00am and close at 7:00pm...we have to be at the polling place at 5:30 at the latest to set up for the day and we usually don't get out of there until 8:30-9:00pm. I take a big bag of snacks and drinks, and a friend usually brings me lunch. We have to keep the lines moving smoothly, make sure election laws and procedures are followed, help answer questions and provide assistance to the elderly and disabled -all while remaining neutral and non-partisian during the day, it can be really hard to read the ballot questions to a person and not put tone or inflection in the voice or influence "our" choices....we get paid $110 for the days work.

I voted on the poll right after Pam put it up. Haven't changed my mind on who I am going to vote for Pres. (and now VP)

I have a friend from high school who knows one of the persons running for VP personally. She lives right around the lake from them. She told me, what you see is what you get! (Meaning that in a good way!):) I had already made up my mind when I spoke to her, but her input sealed the deal for me and my family!

I have a S-I-L and family who live in IL, their sentiments are the same as kuanyin's.

Hugs,
Mae

I am actually democratic, but I do understand that the kind of change Obama is going for is definitely not going to help, but only hurt us. It's not necessarily about Democratic or Republican presidents, it's about the choices they make. I think McCain has a much better understanding of what we need.

I am for all ways of cleaner and safer energy for our country and for our environment- as for drilling offshores- we would not have enough oil to compensate our demand for it- drilling would only take the edge off our consumption use- so we need to lookinto other means of getting our energy- what we don't need is a President who helps the BIG OIL and keeps making us dig deeper into our pockets while enrichening theirs!!!

I can't believe that McCain admitted that if the elect was only on the things they will do about the economy that he would lose. Why would you say that about yourself when the last debate is over the economy problems?! I think he kind of put himself into a hole with quite a lot of people for saying that.

I didn't know that about the Republicans being the the office since 1964 besides Clinton. That is crazy.

Education is so important for our country and I am glad that they are making it a big part of the debate and election. That (since it is my future career) is what I listen to the most. They made it the last part of this debate, but it was good because it made me listen in until the end. I have to say that the debates they gave on education just made me sure on who I am voting for!:D

Early election, can we do that anywhere? I know where I am registered to vote at, but I don't think they have early voting. I have not been over there since before high school:eek: Anyone know? I need to look it up.

yes, the republicans have been in the office of the presidency since 1964, except carter and clinton...but this has nothing to do with anything at all...this country just doesn't work like that...what about the house and the senate? the president doesn't have all the control...

A little off topic,.. you must have all heard about Rep. John Murtha, who called western Pennsylvania "a racist area."
Why do I suspect that this guy is playing mind games! Hey, perhaps they'll go vote for Obama so people will not accuse them of being racist, even though the values they believe in is more like McCain's"

I am completely outraged about the busing in of mexicans/possibly illegals on Friday in Tennessee...(in Nashville) that did NOT have proper ID, only voter registration cards. None of them could provide ID, such as license, registration, credit cards etc...anything with signature etc. to show who they were.
They could NOT speak english...which is a requirment to become a citizen and vote in our country. English speaking persons, (most likely Democrat) drove them in buses, and admitted that they, (mexicans) could not speak english, and that they would go into booth and translate to them.....lwhich they did. Who knows what they translated...but this is completely wrong. wrong. wrong.
No one knew what to do, so they just let them go......and more busses are expected daily.
Someone....someone with Morals, legal expertice, and respect for the future of our voting system, needs to do something about this, and soon, before it ruins our country.
What does this mean for "our" votes? Our legitimate votes? They will not count if we have so many illegal votes in the system. Where is the fairness?
You can be rest assured, that if the Republicans were the ones responsible for the illegal votes....something would be done about it asap.

I'm not sure anyone will answer this, but it's a simple question and I'm gonna ask it anyway...:)

Would you rather live in a country where you are free to make your own decisions and control your own future, or would you rather have your hand held along the way while someone else makes the majority of your decisions for you?

However, I am proud to say I made my boyfriend register to vote, and have convinced my Mother who doesn't always vote, to vote this year! Basically my job in the family has been to make sure everyone votes, I will sign seal and deliver that ballot as long as they fill it out!

It makes me happy because my voice is being heard through theirs, as we all support the same person!

Go to the local library and check out Obama's books....(or in Walmart isleS)!! you can read in his own words

In book, Dreams from My Father "I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."

In book, Dreams from My Father "There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white."

In book, Dreams from My Father "I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela."

Pam, it's all about $$ and power. It's ashame that anyone running for office has to spend outrageous amounts (multi millions) to get elected to an office that pays $400,000 a year.

Lets get real for a second, we can sit here and point fingers about whose done what and whose the bad person but they both have done some not great things and have been involved in some iffy stuff however they both have worked hard for their country at the same time.
I may strongly support one person but I think politics brings out the ugly in people. Everyone thinks they are right and that anyone who doesn't believe what they do is wrong... I mean its America we are all entitled to our own opinions and feelings but in the end one of these two men are going to be elected, like it or not.

Sorry, I just sense some tension here. I hate to see the ugly politics brings with it.

Thank you, I agree. I was slapped around on here for a minute the other day. And thought it was awfully childish. B/c it was simply my opinion and that's all there was to it. People like to analyze and get offended when someone doesn't agree. Looks like a lot of people on here have already made up there mind of who they are voting for. So lets leave it at that and not throw things up in each others face about what each of the candidates have done wrong and all that. B/c after all, we are not the ones running for president (thank God), McCain and Obama are running. Let them do the fighting.

If you are talking about me "slapping you around", I was simply asking you to explain your thoughts. I understand everyone has their own opinions, and I told you that. I just wanted to understand where you were coming from because I didn't understand. That is another problem with threads like this, you don't understand how someone means something by simply reading it. If you are in a bad mood, you will take it in a bad way. Sometimes we all just need to sit back and breathe before we reply.

I have not thrown my opinion out there on who I am voting for because I don't think I should have to defend or justify why I am voting for a certain person. I know people can get ugly on this topic, so I chose to keep mine to myself. The constant bashing of the candidates and their pasts is killing me. All that matters is what they are going to do for our country. Everyone has mistakes in their past, and we have to forget those things. But I agree that the debates were not done like they should have been. I felt like the debates were only bashing what each other did/said, and then them trying to explain what really happened. I don't think they really explained what they are going to do for us and our country during the debates like they normally do. I just have a hard time believing what both of them say because I am tired of candidates saying they will do this and do that, and once they get to be the president they don't do what they say.

I think this whole thread is a prime example of that. We are all very opinionated people and not very tolerant of the opinions of others. I think we have all decided who we are voting for and posting negative things about Obama and McCain will not change that.

If you want to speak your mind---GO VOTE! That is the best example you can set for yourself and others.

I agree w/all of you!
Now lets get real...how can we trust anyone that spends over $600 MILLION dollars on a campaign for a position that pays only $400,000. Why on earth isn't that money being put towards our country's DEBT.....or to help the poor, the sick, towards cancer cure, to feed the homeless, prevent poverty, animal welfare, environmental issues etc.

What does share the wealth REALLY mean? Welfare.
40% of all receipients of welfare are Black.
The biggest turn out for voter registration in the black community across America, is 2008.
Ask any Black American what Obama stands for.....the only answer you will get, is that they never thought they'd live to see the day.....blah, blah, blah.

I wouldn't mind if a Black American were voted in as President.....just not this one. Not with his political & radical ties, & his lack of experience & his background. He cannot make a speach on his own that is NOT unscripted. As far as his "eloquence"....even that is changing!! he is taking the "g" off of his words to suit his black majority, and is beginning to talk slang or "ebonics.
I even would've been happier to see Hillary become President.

Can we please quit with all the bashing of candidates?! It really isn't needed. Show your support for your candidate by voting, not by bashing the other. I am so tired of people putting one down. Everyone has their opinions and they are entitled to them, but talking about all of it on here is just causing tension and drama. So many people said how they have been taught to not talk about politics, and this is why. I don't because I don't feel like I should have to give reasons for my opinion. If I don't understand where someone is coming from, I will ask because I am interested in seeing where they are coming from, but that is about it. I hate the election just because of all the problems it causes between people. I can't wait for it to be over with. I feel like this thread has caused a few problems lately, and it is annoying. If someone states their opinion, don't jump on them, simply say you don't agree if you want. I won't say who I am voting for because I don't think that anyone has the right to tell me I am wrong or look down on me for it. Most of my friends don't even have an idea of who I am voting for, and it will stay that way. I just hate the constant bashing.

FYI...I don't give a crap whether obama is black, white, purple, blue or pink. Fact is...his skin color IS black. No differance to ME.
But, my point was.....that there ARE Blacks who are voting purely based on that fact. His skin color. Not by his political stances. Thee "blacks" in whole or part, do not care. They just want a "Black" man in office.

FYI...he had a Black .....excuse me, Politically correct would be "Negro" Kenyan father, Obama's mother was Caucasian.
Barack Obama is a mulatto. Several dictionaries define mulatto as: "The offspring of one white parent and one black parent; a person whose ancestry is a mixture of Negro and Caucasian."

"I" was not "bashing" Obama. There are quite a few facts that can be found through the proper resources.

As for Obama being "African-American," do people even understand that words have meaning? African-American isn't a race. Africa is a continent. American is a nationality, like being French (France), German (Germany) or Australian (Australia).

Theodore Roosevelt’s ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1917:
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American. … There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. … We have room for but one language here and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
Theodore Roosevelt 1917

Every American citizen needs to read this (above) and fully understand it!

I don't intend, or imply intent, to change anyones opinions on their choice. However, I am using my freedom of speech, (or writing of it) while I still can. One, assuming to be of strong character, can be equally tolerable of both parties views. having said that.....Nothing ya'll say on here offends me.

I hope who ever does get in office, that they turn our country around for the better. I hope our freedoms aren't lost...or taken away, with the incumbant President. I also hope all those who have or will vote for whoever does get into office, that they don't cry about it once they do!!

everyone needs to remember that America was founded on free speech. i think that in this form persons should be able to express opinion without a response from anyone...of course that is just my opinion. i do know that expression about opinions."that opinions are like a**holes everyone has one"..

I like the way the discussion is going. It's too bad we only have two real choices. It seems our country is pulled in two different direction by two different powers. Capitalism and So c i a l i s m. And each party seems to be moving further and further in each direction. Capitalism run amuck turns into Fascism (where the government is run for the corporations). That's the direction we have trended toward the last 8 years. So c i a l i s m run amuck is too community orientated and stifles innovation, which is bad for long term economic growth. Our greatest strength as a country, is that we have balanced these two forces. Unfortunately neither of the two major candidates, seems to be in the center enough to understand that. And neither do enough Americans. Otherwise, candidates like Ron Paul would be major players, instead of minor characters.

As far as share the wealth goes, up to even 30 years ago, the average CEO was making 100 times the average worker. Nowadays the average CEO is making 500 times the average worker. (The minimum wage has not gone up 5 times it's amount in the last 30 years.) The basic problem with, "The Reaganomics Trickle Down System" has been that the money doesn't trickle down. The rich get richer, and they dole out just enough money, for workers to just survive. There's nothing left over, to better yourself. (Educate yourself, buy things, improve your life.) Yet, this is the engine that keeps the economy going. Henry Ford understood this, that's why he paid his unskilled workers, twice the average salary. And in so doing, he created the Middle Class.

There is an old joke that goes ( the difference between a rich man and a poor man, is that, a rich man invests his money and spends the rest and a poor man spends his money and invests the rest.) The rich don't become rich, by spending their money, they become rich by saving their money and investing their money. Investing helps the economy, but it is not what keeps the economy going. What keeps the economy going, is by putting it in the hands of the people who will spend it. That is what share the wealth means. In my opinion. Allowing those workers who are just now barely making it, to improve themselves and in so doing, be the engine that keeps the economy going.

Very well put. You explained your opinion very well.

I don't think discussing what you think will help us is a bad thing. I just hate that everyone wants to bash the person they are not for. Everyone has made up their mind, so getting into arguments with others is just making tension. I think people should state their opinions but not bash what everyone else says if it is different. Being polite is all I want. Very well put though. You made some really good points. I didn't think about what you wrong in the first section. It is really true.

I am dropping off four family members ballots today. I am so excited. Though I can't vote my family has allowed me to be involved in as many ways as possible. I basically explained each and every state measure to them and made sure they filled out their ballots and now I am taking them to a drop off location.

I am happy this is all over tomorrow, but a little nervous on the outcome. This is a huge election and hopefully America makes the right choice, which ever candidate that may be.

Thanks Carol, I have been following politics since John Kerry was fighting Bush for the White House. I am a huge political person, I actually received good news a week or so ago, that the internship I interviewed for down at City Hall is now mine! I am going to be an intern for one of Portland's City commisioners. So yay!

Man, I just saw this thread and boy did it give me a few good chuckles and a couple of hearty belly laughs.

There is one good thing that has come out of this election: It has inspired tons of people who normally don't care about politics to get involved. For that we can all be thankful.

No matter what side you are voting for, the bigger issue is that we as Americans get involved. That is what this this election did for our country. From people who never voted, people who had lost faith, those who never thought their vote mattered and to us here on this site who are voting (and vocal, lol) it has made Americans stand up and want to be heard.

No matter who wins Americans need to realize the power to change goverment is in our hands. Not just at elections but everyday. If we all realized that then we could make our appointed "hired" hands listen to us. If we stand together on the 4th and everyday we could make goverment answer to us whether Democrat, Republican or any other party. They are your employees, so make them work for you.

Thank you all!

Be proud of yourselves and each other that at least we are are taking our part in keeping this country what it should be, a Democracy!!

I agree that we all need to come together as a country. Yes we need to pray for our country, but no matter who was leading it we always need to do that. Everyone thought Bush would be an amazing president, and well we see how that turned out. So maybe all of you that think Obama will be a bad president will think differently in the next year or so after you see him in office. Our country is really messed up right now, so whoever is in office will need our prayers and support to help it get better. Like Obama said last night, those of you that I don't yet have your support, maybe you will see soon that he is going to do the best he can for our country. Give him a chance.:o

I understand where you are coming from, but it was not meant to throw the verses around. Bible verses were thrown around to dis Obama if you want to look at it that way. Tons of people said the bible was against Obama (not speaking about anyone on here, I am talking about emails I have received, just to note). I understand alot of people didn't want Obama to win, but it is over with and there is nothing that can be done to change that. No one knows what he will or won't do for our country. Absolutely, there are always bible verses "thrown around" when it comes to politics...my problem simply falls in those verses being taken out of context and then used to tell me that I am supposed to support him because the bible says so ...which is clearly what just happened...that's all...I have made the decision not to support him, not now or in the future...and I believe I have made the right decision...

I understand the point you are trying to make here, and completely agree with you to a certain extent. However, I don't think the Bible verse was used to tell you to support Obama because the Bible says so.

Clearly, the verse was taken out of context. People do this all the time with Bible verses and with quotes. It's done as a means to help better express a feeling or a point of view. :)

I think in some cases this is true, but not in all. You just have to look at the person who said it and decide on their intent. Personally, I don't feel like Ashley intended to use it to control or manipulate. I think she was using it as a peacekeeping ploy. I think this is probably true of her friend as well.

You do not have to agree with Obama being in office, of course. This is America, after all. And, you can do something about it, you can write your senators and congressmen and tell them to keep him accountable.

I was simply just trying to make peace. I don't want to throw around verses like they are nothing, because they are not. Through all of this there has been lots of tension, and now that all of this is over I just wanted everyone to be peaceful with each other. Didn't know that it would offend anyone, just thought it was a good thing to think of. God works in many ways, and I don't think he would have let things happen if he didn't think we could handle them. I know alot of people don't like Obama, and won't (or atleast until he proves to them he is right for the job), but I never said anyone HAD to like him. I have been saying that from the beginning. And yes I think we can have wonderful conversations without fighting. That is what I wanted from the beginning also. To understand where people are coming from.:o
