DH got this brilliant idea this weekend that we need a waffle maker...i am completely baffled as I know absolutely nothing about waffle makers...i know waffles are tasty, but that is the extent of my knowledge...anybody have any suggestions about a decent waffle maker? Are they all pretty much the same? I know there are regular ones and belgian ones...it seems the belgian ones are thicker? Oh and he said he wants one that makes round waffles...OH my!!! :D

If it were me, I would tell DH that they do not need to be round because once they are cut up to be eaten ... well then they are all the same shape. If you get a square one, you could buy one that has reversable plates so they can do double duty .... waffles on one side and a griddle for eggs, steaks, bacon, pancakes, etc. on the other. :)

Also, if you want tasty waffles like from a Waffle House restaurant ... use a boxed white cake mix. Add 1 egg and then enough half & half to make the batter the same consistency as a pancake batter. Yummy!!!

As to the brand, I always used a Sunbeam. For me, there is no need for a more expensive brand since they don't get used all that often. Even a cheap one will last for many, many years.

I love waffles, and used to have a waffle maker until I moved back to TN. The best one to get is one that you can flip, but they are a little more expensive. Those I think are the best ones to get. I don't like the square ones either. I know it's wierd! But the ones where you pour it in, wait, then flip it over, then wait, then you can eat it, well those are the ones that do a really good job. Haha, now I want a waffle!

We, too, prefer round waffles... We have a couple of waffle makers, one stays out in our travel trailer. (I know, we don't "rough it" very rough...) This is our favorite waffle (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Classic-Waffles/Detail.aspx) recipe, I'll package up a batch of the dry ingredients & take it along when we camp. Just add the wet stuff to it & we have a yummy breakfast, with coffee & a mimosa & some jealous neighbors! At home, we usually make a double batch. Lay the extras out on cooling racks until they cool completely and pack them in freezer bags with wax paper between. Freeze them, stick one in the toaster oven to thaw & warm & crisp back up. They taste like freshly made!
mmm...think I'll have one in the morning... good with lingonberry jam....
:D

Homemade waffles are so much better than the frozen ones from the store! I make extra batter and cook it all. I then freeze the extras and zap them in the microwave for a quick breakfast before work and school.

Funny thing about food, we eat with our eyes first!
I think I'll have to pull out the old waffle maker and make some waffles soon, maybe this weekend, try it with grated a grated apple in it, outstanding! and good for you.

Ok great ... now I want waffles also! :)

My fave waffles are made with the white cake mix I mentioned earlier. But then add some unsalted pecans and a little bit of vanilla extract to the mix before cooking. OMGoodness they are delish!!! I like those with just butter on them ... no syrup because they are rich tasting. :)

AGREED! I make extra pancakes, too, and do the same thing with them. They are such a nice treat for hubby's lunch!

We didn't! Hubby started making himself some oatmeal before I could get to the waffles. Maybe tomorrow!

Rather than zap the waffles, try toasting them in the toaster. If you like your waffles crispy that is.

Found a step-by-step guide for waffles ... and yes ... it uses a round waffle maker. LOL

I think this one is pretty neat though I haven't tried the waffles yet. I think it is kewl because it lists alternatives for those with allergies. I know I plan to keep the recipe for use with one of my g-babes who seems to be allergic to so many things.

My family wouldn't consider it a successful waffle breakfast if we didn't get some waffle batter stuck on the iron...lol
