Rebate checks diverted to pay $2B in debts

USA today reports: "About $2 billion in economic stimulus rebate checks are being confiscated to pay overdue bills for child support, students loans and back taxes, the government says.

So far, 1.8 million rebate checks have been intercepted by Treasury Department computers showing that individuals owe money to federal or state governments.

The biggest beneficiaries: parents who are owed child support."

Wow... Debt always catches up to those who owe.

I hate to say it, but in one of my relative's cases, I hope this happens. My BIL has not been paying his child support for our niece, and it would sure be nice for my SIL to get the extra money!

GREAT, anyone who doesn't pay child support doesn't need to get anything.

I worked in welfare for twenty-seven years. It is the child who pays the price when deadbeats don't pay.

thats the way it should work if you owe child support then they should take it from you and give it for the care of your child.

I think that this is really good. People who owe money don't need those checks because they will most likely spend it on something they don't need. My boyfriend hopefully will get his because he has outstandind tickets he needs to pay. I wonder if they will take it for that? Guess we will find out soon. Proudly he is working on his debt, and almost out of it. We are taking care of the last of it (besides the tickets) tomorrow! The tickets are being paid with his rebate check, if we get it! I think that people who owe for child support shouldn't even get their other income tax check. That is so wrong. If you are old enough to have s e x then you should be old enough to take care of a child. I know things happen, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. I know someone who has their child, but not custody and he still pays the mom child support even though he has had the child for a year now. She is hooked on drugs and got everything reposed (the house was in his name so it really screwed him). He is working 80 hours a week so he can take her to court and get full custody and no visitations to her. He deserves her money she is getting, but sadly he won't get it.

My brother had a baby with a deadbeatass. She hasn't seen my nephew in 5 years! He gets her tax returns every year. She hasn't paid child support EVER! But no matter what he does he can't get the government to do anything to her!:mad: If it were him that owed he would be in jail!:eek:

It is the law to take income tax refunds. In Ky we also take a portion of unemployment if you owe back child support. Most any money from goverment gets hit. Here they publish the names of persons who owe child support in the paper a few times per year here in Louisville!!

GOOD! I'm glad this is happening, those deadbeats don't deserve that money anyway. so there. now I'll get off the soapbox. :D
