I am currently looking for work after losing my job in January. I have a problem when it comes to my resume, applications, and my interviews. I was fired from my job by a office manager that, in my words, was undiagnosed with bipolar disorder, but I can't really say that in my interviews unless I know that they will take it as a joke.
On the different applications that I have filled out it wants to know why I left that position that I was currently in, and who is the person in charge. I don't put her name down if I don't have to but I can't think of any other reason for leaving other than 'office manager' problems, and I know that turns a lot of potential employers away. It honestly was NOT ME, it was her. she was out to get me from day one. she told me in my review that she was really jealous of me because I made friends faster than she did and she had been there 2 years already and was not considered a 'friend' to anyone there. She said that I made her look bad, and I really think that was the underlying reason why she fired me. But she will not say that.
Also I am afraid that when potential employers call her that she is giving them a bad review of me, but how can I prove that? I know by law they are not supposed to say anything bad about you but I think that she is really running my chances at getting the jobs that I have already applied for.
Can anyone help by giving me suggestions on how to handle this? what is done is already done and I can't go back and change it. I know I should have kissed her butt to just have a job, but I just didnt' think that having one person bring me down that bad, and erasing my being was something that would be good for me.

Ok - first have a friend call and pretend to be a prospective employer and ask for their opinion of your work. By law a former employer really can only give out the dates of employment and if they would rehire you. They should not release pay info without a signed release from you. If the former employer is giving out any other info then I would report them to the wage and hour board.
As for the reason you left former employment - all you can do is be honest without throwing her under the bus. It is really hard to get around those questions - I would just say that I left due to personal reasons. Let them read into that what ever they want.

Good answer! I have been in and out of management for many years and you are correct when you say by law she can give employments dates and would she rehire. I also think thats a very good answer on why she left her job.
When your getting interveiwed unless they directly ask for your side of what happen I would just let sleeping dogs be.

Thank you so much I will take all the info into consideration and do the best I can with it. It is just so frustrating dealing with all of this.
But I will take the advice and go from there.:)

You just have to be honest. Just say you were terminated. When you are in the interview you can explain and do not lie about it. MANY agencies do background checks and will know if you leave a job and do not put it on your resume. It is better to be honest and upfront.

Brandy is absolutely right. When I was office mgr. at a temp agency, as long as they told me about it before I found out, I'd hire felons or whatever. Honesty is wayyyy better! And, in your case, anyone can understand about working for a dork supervisor. Probably everyone has at one time or another!

Like many of the others have said, just be honest during your interviews.
I have never been terminated by an employer, but I have quit because I had a horrible manager. When I applied for a position with another company, when asked why I left my last position, I answer for personal reasons. I have always been hired for the position using that reason. If was asked to share the details, I was honest and said my manager and I did not get along.
Good luck!

Mae
