This is a good company to sign up with if you want to start earning money towards college for your children. There are several ways to earn money in your account.
1) Certain grocery/drug store cards you can link to the account and when you buy products like Coca-Cola or Gortons, etc. they deposit money in your account. There are also "coupons" you can sign up for at the beginning of the month and when you buy those items at one of the participating stores, you get an extra amount of money added to your account.
2) When you shop online through their website you earn money in the account. JCPenney.com, Walmart.com, and even Ebay.com all give you money towards college when you shop through the upromise site.
3) Some stores/gas stations give you money towards this account when you link your credit card and shop with it at these stores.
4) Some restaurants work the same way when you use your linked credit card.
5) You can sign up for a Upromise credit card and get 1% of everything you charge in this account.
Plus there are even more ways to earn. Check out www.upromise.com if you are interested. I know that the site is legitimite. Some grocery stores even have their symbol on the shelves by participating products. I have over $120 in my account. I never invested it, but they have that option which would be great for long term planning. Oh, and you can also have your "friends and family" sign up to help you, which really can help it to add up.

I signed up for Upromise for my daughter in January of this year and so far we've got a whole $4.45 in her account! I have two credit cards linked to it, my CVS card and multiple grocery stores and I always go through the Upromise site when making online purchases, but I guess I'm just not buying the right things. It also doesn't help that only a couple of restaraunts in town participate in the program. Oh well, I'll keep using it and maybe it will start adding up. Just wish someone would have told me about it last July when my daughter was born - then we might have had a whole $7 in her account by now! LOL
cath 31 - How long have you been participating in Upromise? Just curious since you already have $120 in your account.

I actually have been a member for quite a long time. I joined in Oct 2001. My son in in college now and I am going to cash it out to go towards books (probably one at today's prices). The way I look at it, I really haven't done much of anything to get this money. It hasn't inconvenienced me in any way. Don't be discouraged- since your daughter is so young, just think how much you could have in that account by the time you need it for college. I think every little bit counts. Also make sure any relatives/friends help by signing up on your account. That will really help it to grow. I already had a credit card with money back or I would have signed up for the Upromise one. If your credit card doesn't give you anything back, it would be well worth it to change to the Upromise one since you would be getting 1% back on everything you purchase. You also have plenty of time to link it to a 529 college savings plan if you want to (I joined when my son was older so I didn't bother with that). Also you can download the Upromise toolbar so that you are sure to get credit for anything you buy online that qualifies. Good luck!

Oh, I'll keep using the card, but I don't expect it to make a very big dent in my daughter's college expenses. I agree that every little bit counts and I will take anything I can get! :)
We already have a cash back credit card too, so I'm not going to sign up for the Upromise credit card offer either.
As far as having friends and relatives sign up on my account - my mom started her own Upromise account for my daughter. I sent her an invite e-mail to link up to our account, but for some reason she couldn't get that to work, so she just started her own account. I really don't have anyone else that I can ask since all of my friends have their own kids. I've thought about asking my inlaws, but they're older and I know they wouldn't give me their credit card information to link up to her account and they would feel that helping her would be unfair to their other grandchildren - although two of them are already grown.
I'll definitely keep using my daughter's Upromise account, but I joke around that by the time she's ready for college that she probably won't even have $100 in there. I'm thinking of signing her up for the prepaid college program to at least cover 2 years of community college.

I thought I'd give an update on this one. I requested a check from Upromise and got the $128.75 that I earned. You can transfer your balance into a 529 account if you prefer, but since I started it when my son was older I never looked into this. I did want everyone to know that I did receive the check so that you know it is a legitimate site. I urge anyone with kids to look into it.

I have just ended with them my son graduated, I did the request got my money, it is not a fast process ( about 12 weeks) but it was nice when i got it. I had been using albertson grocery card which they just did away with, but there are other ways to get the money slow & steady it adds up. I hate to leave them but it was nice to work with them. Good luck to all

I originally posted about this. I was wondering if anyone else likes this program as much as I do.

I have all my shopper cards linked to it, including my mom's but I only have
$.08 cents in there. We don't use credit cards for regular purchaes (only major appliances/hotels), and there are not a whole lot of places around here that participate.
Now, I have been using a site called E-Rewards (www.e-rewards.com) that I have much success with. You do surveys for the money. Since Upromise is a program sponser, all money you accumulate goes towards your savings. Once you reach 'levels', you can turn that money into the savings.
If anyone would like any more info, just let me know!

I have been signed up with upromise for a little over 3 years. I have over $150. The good money comes from online shopping. When I need something I will check online and see if I can get free shipping. As long as I can get free shipping, it doesn't make sense to go to the store. I ordered my double stroller and car seat from Target when they had free shipping. So I had these big items delivered to me, plus I got my upromise money. I have the money rolled into my kids' 529 accounts, so from there it gets invested.

I recently started using E-Rewards as well. I like that you get points even when you don't qualify for the full survey. What I don't like about it is that they make it look like you have, say $16 in your account, but in order to get
$5 in Upromise, you need $25. To me that is very misleading. I think they should use a point system, not a monetary system that makes it look like you have more than you really do.

Yes, I totally agree with you on this one. I have roughly $82.00 in my account, but I need to get to $100 to get the reward level. I think I'm going to ride it out for a bit though. My student loans are very doable right now!

I didn't realize that! I am a member of both Upromise and E-Rewards. I need to check into this and see how you transfer the money to your Upromise account. I have a K-12 loan since my little girl is in private school.
Thank you for this information!!
Sadly, I have only earned 20 cents so far with Upromise - LOL. :o
Edited to add: I have been to both sites and can not see where the two can link together. Can you help?

I am wondering the same thing! I have been doing U-Promise since 2002 and e-Rewards for a couple of years. I had no idea that the two could be linked. I have looked through both sites and cannot find any information about it. The e-Rewards prizes are not the greatest and I would love to move my credit to U-Promise. Can anyone help?

For me, when I go to the e-Rewards page, I can click on "REWARDS" at the top of the page, and it lists "rewards by category, level and company". Under the 'company' listing, Upromise is listed. Once I click on that link, it then brings up the levels that can be used-$25 level is $5 in Upromise savings, $50 level is $20 in savings, and the $100 level is $50 in savings. After I click on that, it brings me to a login with email and password. Under the terms and conditions, it states you must be a member of Upromise in good standing and the transfer can take 30-45 days to complete.
Hope that helps!

Upromise is not listed under companies on my page:confused:
I am going to email e-rewards and ask them about this.
Thanks for you help Cindy!

If anyone else is interested, this is the reply I got from e-rewards:
Good day,
Thank you for contacting e-rewards. We apologize for the confusion, but
there is no way to link both accounts. Only members who enrolled to our
program through Upromise are eligible to redeem Upromise savings. In
case you are interested in redeeming Upromise savings, we will require
that you cancel your current account, forfeit all earned points on it
and please visit the Upromise website to re-enroll using another email
address.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have further questions.

That's really interesting. I signed up for it thru Upromise and the only rewards you can get that way are credit in your Upromise account- I didn't even know you could sign up for it differently. I am curious, what other rewards are you able to get from them since you signed up another way?

In my opinion, the rewards are not that great. They offer lots of magazine subscriptions, but most are titles I am not interested in. They also offer airline frequent flier miles and points. They also offer some gift certificates for e-retailers and coupons for discounts on purchases.

Thanks for the info. I prefer my Upromise being linked to it rather than what you describe as well. It's ashame you can't just transfer your points, but at least you can earn towards Upromise in the future once you switch over.

UPromise must really be growing. I received a letter concerning a 529 plan account with a big nationwide bank. The bank's 529 plan offerings will be administered by UPromise starting later July.

If you have been thinking of joining this worthwhile program, I can send you a referral. If you register by July 31st, I would get $2 in my account. If you are interested, PM me your email and you will get an invite from Upromise. If you have any questions that weren't discussed in this thread, just ask :) Thanks.

Upromise is free. I have been a member for a few years and last year I got the upromise credit card and I am close to $250 in my account (we are opening a 529 soon!) Stores never charge you. It may cost money to set up a 529 account depending on where you live, how much you contribute, who you get it from. You can choose any 529 account not just the one on the upromise site. Check around.
Here are a few ways in which you can earn money for your or your childs education.
*First sign up for the program.
register your participating grocery store reward cards-for example my local piggly wiggly store participates. When I buy participating items (listed on the upromise website) and scan my pig card I get a percentage back into my upromise account.
*register your credit cards and you get certain % back at participating gas stations and a few stores
*Shop on online through the upromise website,
*register for the upromise credit card and get 1% back
You can do all or one or in between.
hope this helps

I have almost $30 in my account............will help pay down that $15,000 parent plus loan I took out to send my son to college. Course, him and DIL have $35,000 in loans. I got $5 in the account when I filed w/Turbo Tax.
At Christmas, I shopped online quite a bit through the site........walmart.com,
Target.com, Kohls, etc. Love the site and only wished I had found it sooner.
