I've seen such wonderful things come from the prayers of the women on this forum, and I'm hoping you ladies are ready to start praying again.

Friends of my husband and I recently had a baby girl (Addison) born at just 26weeks gestation. Addison is in NICU and has been making some progress, but there have been setbacks as well. It's absolutely heartbreaking to see a child go through so much so early in life. You can go to www.carepages.com to read about her and see pictures of her. You have to set up an account to see her, but it's free. Her care page name is AddisonAdams.

Count me in. Prayers for her, her family, and her caregivers (it's hard on them too, believe me) will be lifted up to God. Wish them all well. And I wish you well too, thanks for telling us.

This is right up my alley. I work for the March of Dimes and I work in the hospitals providing support to NICU families. If you know the name of the hospital then I can see if a March of Dimes NICU Family Support Project exists in the hospital. This would be a huge resource for this family. I could also send them some information. I know this is a very over-whelming time for them and any resource will help.

I just signed up and viewed all the pictures. She is so tiny, but in the best of care, Prayers for baby Addison, mom and dad, friends and family, and to all the doctors and nurses caring for her.
My SIL and BIL went through the same thing almost 5 years ago, their daughter was a preemie also and weighed only 1lb.9oz. she was in the hospital for 144 days if I remember correctly. Today she is a healthy, soon to be 5 yr. old.

Good news and bad news today. Bad first... The doctors do believe that Addison has developed the NEC symptoms that I mentioned yesterday. Good news... they don't believe that she has it to the extent of dying intestinal tissue. They think that they caught it in time and are working on fixing the problem. They have put her back on TPN and lipids and taken all foods away from her. They say that this is part of the treatment for NEC along with antibiotics. More of the just Wait and See days ahead. They say that if the NEC has not gotten worse in 24-48 hours from onset, then you have probably gotten off with a mild case... lets hope for that. We are over the 24 hour mark... working on the 48 hours.
Love to all. Thanks for the continued prayers. Please continue to pray for Addison to get over this bump in the road and have lots more good days. Also please continue to pray for her doctors and nurses that they might be the instruments of God to protect and heal our precious baby.

This is the latest update on Addison...

Hey all, another day closer to my baby being well. That is how I have chosen to look at it for now. Things may change, but that is my take on things.
Today, the doctor said that Addison may have to have surgery on her intestines. He says that he sees something on the x-ray that indicates that she has some damaged intestine. If they have to operate, they will cut out the damaged section and give her an ostomy bag. This is where her feces will come out her abdomen into a bag instead of through her hiney. After the ends of the intestine have time to heal, they will then go back in and reattach the intestine and take out the ostomy.
Sometimes it seems that everytime I think she is doing good and say so on this site, things change. I am trying to keep up, so bear with me.
Otherwise, Addison is doing well. There are no bleeds indicated on the sonogram of her head. She is still intubated, but breathing mainly on her own... the ventilator is on a demand setting where it only kicks in as needed and she ain't needing it too much(according to the nurse).
Again, thanks for all the support throughout this time.

Ronnie, Emily, Harley, Bailey, and Addison.

I just received the latest update on baby Addison.

April 21, 2008 at 05:24 PM EDT
Went to see little Addison today. The Umbilibcal artery line is OUT as well as one of her IV lines. Her Belly is still swollen. We are hoping that they will do the tests on it in the next couple of days and let her start eating again. Right now... only IV fluids for nourishment.
She is still having a few of the apenic episodes, but they say that she will grow out of them in the next 3-4 weeks. Lets hope they are right. Right now she is still on the vapotherm machine which is a nasal cannula oxygen device at higher pressure. They hope to get her on the regular nasal cannula soon and off of the high pressure.
Every thing else seems to be going fine. Still gaining a little weight (up to 2 pounds 10.5 ounces) and still not on any antibiotics.
Love to all
Ronnie, Emily, Harley, Bailey, and Addison.

Update on baby Addison...May 1

May 01, 2008 at 04:10 PM EDT
WOW, what a difference a day makes. First of all the good news... 3pounds 1 ounce. Still working towards the bigtime.
Now the bad news. Addison had to be intubated again. They had to put the tube back in her throat that helps her breathe. She started having the periods of apnea again today... only worse. She would stop breathing and her heart rate would drop, when vigorously stimulated, she would start breathing and her heart rate would come back up, but would not stay. When you stop stimulating her, she would quit breathing again and her heart rate would drop. They do not know exactly what is causing it. They just keep saying "she is a premie and premies do this." Another of their wait and see situations.
They keep telling us that the situation with a premie is like a roller coaster, it has its ups and downs...well i, for one, am tired of this roller coaster. I am ready for it to be over with and my baby to be better.
Please continue the prayers for Addison and the rest of us as well.
Love to all

Baby Addison needs more prayers today, she has pneumonia right now and is in isolation.

May 02, 2008 at 10:39 AM EDT
Well, they told us that this was a roller coaster ride... it just seems like right now the only way we can go is down. Addison has been diagnosed with pneumonia in her right lung and she has an antibiotic resistant infection that has gotten into her blood stream. They have moved her from the NICU floor to an isolation room and we will now have to glove and gown to see her. They have started her on some high power, high dollar antibiotic that MIGHT help with the infection. Just have to (again) wait and see.
Love to all,

Thank you so much, Carol, for updating this for me. Things are pretty rough on Addison and her family right now, and I am so greatful to see you ladies are still checking on her and keeping her in your prayers. She may still need surgery on her intestines as well, so Addison could be in for some really hard times even after she kicks the pneumonia.

May 04, 2008 at 04:29 PM EDT
hey all. Addison having another bad day today. Her abdomen is REALLY swollen. It has increased by 2.5cm since Friday. They are keeping an eye on it and are "concerned", but do not see anything right now to indicate even an exploratory surgery. They continue to monitor it.
Today, she looks like she feels bad. Just has that look about her... I do not know how to explain it.
We will try to keep everyone updated as much as possible.

Today's update....

Hello, Addison's belly was 30cm this morning, biggest it has been yet. She is going in for an exploritory laprascopic surgery today. The doctor thinks she may have a hidden periforation of her bowel that they cannot see on the xray. We are nervious and happy at the same time. We hope that the surgery will be a success and her belly will get better. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Sorry for all the missed spelled words. Emily

I don't know what time the surgery is. It may have been done already, but I haven't heard anything from them yet. Please keep praying. She really needs us all today.

Surgery update....

Surgery was a success!!!! Addison came through her surgery with no complications and is doing fine now. She is a little pale, but that is due to the loss of blood during the surgery. They plan to give her a transfusion later this evening and that will help with the paleness.
They had to take out a total of 13.5cm of intestine. 13 of it in one clump of dead and decaying bowel. This also had some feces in the area from the perferation of the bowel. The other 0.5cm of bowel was from another small spot that he took out as a precaution. He said that this was probably the cause of the blood infection this past weekend and was the cause of all of the swelling. She has a flat tummy now.
She does have an ostomy. This is where the bowel is rerouted to
the outside of the abdomen and the feces will drain into the ostomy. The surgeon said that in 4-6 weeks, he will go back in and reconnect the intestine and remove the ostomy and she should have a normal system from now on. They plan to start feeding her next week.
We still have a long way to go before our baby is home with us, but this feels like a HUGE step forward in the process.
Again, Many thanks to everyone for the continued prayers and thoughts. There is no way that we could have made it this far without your prayers and the love of a mighty God to lead us. We ask for you to keep us in your prayers as we keep you in ours.

Love to all

Ronnie, Emily, Harley, Bailey, and Addison

Great news today!!

May 14, 2008 at 02:53 PM EDT
Today, Addison looks the best that she has ever looked. She is finally getting the breast milk that she needs. They started her last night on a special formula for babies with history of stomach/intestinal problems. The plan was to keep her on it until she tolerated the formula well enough to go over to the breast milk. At noon today, they swapped her over to all breast milk.
She is still on the vapotherm oxygen system that is pressurized to keep her lungs inflated, but it is at the lowest setting and at the same amount of oxygen as in normal air... no additional oxygen.
She still has the ostomy in her tummy, but is doing well and the surgery site looks good. They have said that if she does well, she could go home even with the ostomy. We will just have to learn to clean it until they decide to return her intestines to normal... I think me and Emily should be able to handle that though.
They next step is to move her to a regular crib. They seem to think that this will happen in the next week to 10 days. After that... Home sweet Home.
Thanks to everyone for the prayers and support.

Things are really starting to look great for Addison! It's amazing to me how strong such a tiny little baby can be.

Today, Addison made the big move. She is out of the isolet bed and into a regular crib. They have her wrapped with blankets to keep warm and she is doing well at maintaining her temperature.
She is on Breast milk and responding well. She is not absorbing the nutrients as well as they would like so she still has the IV nutrients to suppliment her milk. Hopefully, when they reattach her intestines, she will absorb properly and not have any problems. They are still saying that the reattachment surgery will be in 3-5 weeks from this week.

Again, Addison continues to do well. They have moved her out of her private room and onto the main floor of the NICU.
We talked to the surgeon today. He indicated that we are looking at about 6 more weeks in the hospital. Three more before they repair her bowels, and the about three more to get her feedings up so that she can go home.
Still no supplimental oxygen. Still doing well. Please continue to pray that we stay on the uphill course that we are on now.

Addie continues to improve from her recent illness. She is still having a few of the episodes of slow heart rate and apnea. Still not sure what is causing this.
The surgeons came by today and said that either tonight or tomorrow, they are going to run a test to see how her lower intestines are doing and to see how near that the intestine is to being ready to repair the hole they cut. Will try to update as soon as we find something out.

Hi everyone! Addison is finally five pounds! She is doing very well. There is still contrast in her belly from the last fistula gram and they cannot repeat the test until it has cleared, which has set us back about two weeks.
Yesterday I was in tears, someone had put a three month size outfit on her, it was way to big. What upset me was that she is almost three months old and is still in the hospital. I want her home so bad, I called the nursery to get report on her and the nurse called her self Addisons "mommie for the night".
I just want her home. Thanks again for all the prayers! We love you all. The Adams Family.

Hi everyone! Good news! Addisons surgery to reconnect her bowel has been scheduled for the 25 of June. The surgon has a few theorys on the contrast still in her bowel, he thinks that it has coated her bowel and is not a solid mass, because she is passing breastmilk through her ostomy. He feels that he can irrigate her bowel shortly before the surgery and remove the contrast if need be. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Emily, ronnie,Harley,Bailey and Addison.

Hey all, Addie continues to do well. She had the Barium test yesterday and they FINALLY got it right. They actually put the barium in the correct fistula this time. They said that all looks good and she is a go for the surgery next Wednesday. They have also begun to irrigate the lower part of her intestines in preparation for the surgery.
She had an eye test Monday and they diagnosed her with Retinopathy of Prematurity(ROP). They say that she has stage 2 (1 being the mildest stage and 5 being BLIND). Usually, Stage 2 will correct itself within a few days. They are going to retest her weekly for the next few weeks and monitor the ROP. If it gets worse, they can try a laser surgery to correct it. We hope and pray that it gets better and she does not have any eye problems in the future.
Thanks to everyone for the prayers and concerns. Love to all.

June 23, 2008 at 08:14 PM EDT
Addison continues to do well. She is getting prepared for her surgery on her stomach on Wednesday. They still say that she is looking good for the surgery and do not expect any major problems.
As far as her eyes go, they have said that if Addison were going home in the next few days, that they would go ahead and do the laser surgery to correct the ROP. Since we are going to be there a few more weeks, they feel like they can hold off and just watch it a little longer.
Please continue to pray for her in the coming weeks. She has a big challenge ahead with the stomach recovery and hopefully her eyes can clear up and not need surgery.

Addie continues to improve from her surgery. They have taken the breathng tube out of her and are working on getting her off of all oxygen and pain meds. They have to slowly work off of the meds because they do not want her in any pain but need to wean her off the meds. They hope to have her off of the meds by today. They are also working her off of the oxygen. This too is a slow but steady decrease until she can tolerate being without the supplimental oxygen.
Thanks to everyone for your prayers and support this week and throughout this entire situation.

Addison is off the oxygen and the pain meds. This is the first time we have seen her without a tube taped to her face.I was very excited to change my first poopie diaper today! That means the plumbing is working. They are holding off the feedings for now. I hope tomorrow they will feed her, she is so hungery!! They give her sucrose to help with the aggitation, it really just makes her want to eat. She is so beautiful, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, she is coming home soon!

Things are really starting to look great for Addison.

Today has been a BIG day for us. Addison had her first real feeding with real breast milk since her surgery. She seems to be tolerating it well and likes it. She gets 10ml every three hours. Her target is to get 45ml every three hours. Then we can bring her home. Her doctor told us today that there is a possibility that we have a chance of maybe, possibly, hopefully bringing her home the first of next week!!!!!! He said that it is only a guess and not a guarantee. We are trying not to get our hopes too high but it is hard. We can FINALLY see the light at the end of the tunnel. Please pray that she continues to take her milk well and that her stomach and intestines continue to absorb the nutrients and not have any problems.
Our only other concern for now is her eyes. They have not rechecked them since last week so we do not know if they have gotten any better or worse since then. Pray for improvement!!!!

Love to all

Today has been a pretty good day. We had to learn how to maintain Addison's nasogastric tube for her feedings. Tomorrow we have to learn to use the pump that will assist with feedings. All things we will go home with. IT IS COMING!!!!! We do not know exactly when, but we are learning all of the things that we need to know in order to come home!!!
This means that she will come home with a apnea monitor and a feeding tube, but we will continue to monitor her and maintain her therapy on an outpatient basis. All things that Emily and I will have to do... but who better than a paramedic and a nurse to take care of our little baby. We can handle any thing with the help of Christ, family and prayers.

Addison has started dumping her feeds again. That means that she is not absorbing the nutrients from her feeds again. They plan on testing her for the dumping every day and adjusting her feeding times every day. On the days that she is not dumping, they will drop her feeding time by 15 minutes. As of today, her feeds are over a 2 hour time period. When they get down to one hour, they are going to let us go home. That could be as little as 3-4 days or it could be a lot longer. Just according to her tummy.

Thanks to everyone for all of the prayers and support.

Wow! Sounds like this precious little Addison has been through a lot already. I am so glad she will get to come home soon. :)

One of my sisters was premature. This was way back in the day before they had all the knowledge and equipment they do now. They were trying to get her up to 5 lbs. before they would let her go home. She was losing weight instead. Finally, my mother insisted she take her home. Glory be! After Mom got her home ... complete change in my sister. She ate fine and put on enough weight that before long you couldn't even tell she was a preemie.

I hope and pray Addison does just as well!

Addison is doing well. They have said that she is no longer dumping her feeds and have decreased her feed time to 1.5 hours. 1 hour is the magic time for us. When she gets to 1 hour and no dumping, we can go home!!! We are very anxious to get home and be with our family outside of this hospital setting. We well know that there will still be trials and many doctor's appointments, but we are ready for the next phase of this journey. Please keep up the prayers.

More of the roller coaster ride this week. Addison had been doing so well and then, she starts dumping again. This sets us back a few days at best. Every time she dumps, it sets us back by 2-3 days. Please pray for her intestines to start absorbing the nutrients again and not to dump any more.
She also has an abcess on her stomach at the incision site. They are treating it with antibiotics and looks much better today than yesterday when they started the medicine.

Finally, feedings are below 1 hour time. Today the doctor reduced her time to 45 minutes!!!! If all goes well, we are really looking at this Wednesday for coming home. Possibly sooner!!!!!
They could find no signs of infection except the small red area around her surgery site. Everything looks good. She does have a herniated area at the surgery site too. This is fairly common with abdominal surgery and can be repaired at a later date. They have talked about maybe looking at it next year.

Please continue to pray for her as we get ready to bring her home and that she will do well with her feedings from here out.

Tomorrow is the day. Addison is FINALLY coming home. They are going to put her on a higher calorie formula tonight and see if she absorbs the formula. They are then going to take out her central IV line in the morning. As long as there is no dumping, and she absorbs the formula correctly.... Update on Addison..........

This has been an interesting week with the little one. She took her first trip to church on sunday and did well. We had to leave early as it was running in to her feeding time. Feeding is every three hours and takes an hour at a time. That is really rough around 3 in the morning!!! Really tough for Emily when I have to work all night. Yesterday was the first day that I went back to work and Emily had her all by herself. On Monday, we took her to her pediatrician and she had lost 2 ounces. We had to take her back today to recheck her weight and now she had gained one of the ounces back. Had she continued to lose weight, they were talking of admitting her back in the hospital to see what is going on. Continue to pray for us as we still have a long way to go. The surgeon is going to remove Addison's central IV line tomorrow(8-27) at about 8 am. He has said that he can do it in his office and not have to completely knock her out. If he can do it this way, she will not have to spend the night in the hospital. If he runs into complications, he will have to take her to surgery and put her out for the procedure. Keep fingers crossed and prayers lifted.

Thanks

Addison continues to do well. She is up to 8 pounds. She has begun to show a personallity... smiling, laughing, such as that. She has been evaluated by both speech and physical therapists and they think that she needs some therapy... not much... but some.
Bailey continues to get used to the idea of not being an only child. She shows her jealousy sometimes when she wants us to do something, but we have to take care of Addie first. She is learning though, after we get Addie set, we are her willing playmates.
Harley is the star of her school's fall play. She has the lead role and seems to be doing great at it. The play is the 19 and 20 of this month and she says that they are ready for opening night.
Emily and I are still kicking. We are enjoying our family, just wish Addison would take a bottle and get rid of the feeding tube.

Thanks to everyone for the continued prayers and support.
