The debit function might be linked directly to the bank and the lines might be down which means you might not be able to transmit the balance in your account to said store. The credit function might work differently and not need to transmit if you have enough in your account to cover it.
This is just a thought.

A cashier told you that? she may of been new and was punching in something on the register that was wrong, I mean all you need is your ATM code, and your debit card should work, maybe call the bank and ask them if there could be a problem first, if anything you may have to reset your ATM numbers.

Next time (should that happen again) tell them, look, I am living off my last 2 million so it is impossible that there isn't enough money. ;)

Yes, it makes sense to me. I worked in retail sales for many years.
There is a "code" that comes up on the register when you are checking out. The store is NOT allowed to give you the code, but can only advice you to call your bank for assistance.
Sometimes this happens when you have used your debit card more than 3 times in a short period of time. It will automatically send a "code" in the "system" for your security bar on the back of your card. IE... telling the machine and computer system the card might be stolen since it has been used many times in a short amount of time. Of course you know you card has not been stolen but the "system" doesn't.
I would call your bank and find out what you should do so this does not happen anymore.
Hope this helps. :D

Sometimes here (and this may sound ridiculous, but it's true) the regular line for the debit/check cards doesn't work right if it's really cold outside. Is it really cold there? When that one doesn't work, they run it through another line and it comes out as a charge.

YVW!! I can imagine how embarrassing it was!!! Kinda like everytime I would have film developed at Target their sensors would go off as I was leaving the store, because the cashier did not place it on the demagnatizer pad before putting it in the bag!! I'd ALWAYS have my receipt in my hand because I KNEW it was going to go off!!
When I worked for TRU we were NOT allowed to give out the code. I hated when this happened especially during Christmas!! I would have to call the bank for verification and authorization codes. MOST of the people were honest, but I will say there were a few that I KNEW the card was NOT theirs just by their reaction when the cashier would call for assistance. They'd (the customer) make a BIG stink in the store and say they would go get the cash and come back, they NEVER did!

It did it in walmart, the cashier made me feel about the size of a nats a**,but I understand.I'm assuming being the weekend there was nothing that could be done. The manager assisted me in saying what the code meant and she was sorry there was nothing she could do.

Man, I don't know why anyone would feel obligated or get a kick out of making you feel bad over some stupid error. People can be so rude and insensitive for no reason. :(

If you put the wrong PIN in 3 times, it will automatically freeze the card. However, this should prevent the credit feature from being used too. Sometimes you get a denial on the credit side as well and the authorization has gone through on the bank end but the store can't see it. So now, they run it through again and you're stuck with the double authorization until one falls off!
This just happened to me at the gas station last week. Now I have an extra hold which can't be removed until Tuesday midnight! I had to do some serious scrambling to put extra money in my account because that extra freeze will prevent anything legitimate from going through my account and cause a snowball of bounces.. AAGGGHHH!!!

Your post sure makes me appreciate even more the advantages of being in a small community. I had a problem with a hold, and the bank waived the hold for me when I phoned in so I could use my card and yet not be charged an overdraft.

You really need to call the bank. When you use a debit as a debit card then the funds come out right away. There is something wrong with the bank and the message they are sending to the retailers.
When you use a card as credit then the money is just approved and taken out of your account. When I use my card as credit the transaction is usually pending to my account for a few days and does not post.

This same thing happens to me at walmart all the time. I can usually run it as credit and it will work fine. The cashiers tell me that happens alot. Seems like its just with them because I can use it everywhere else with no problems.

i just recently quit my job at a bank! haha! i remember people had this happen for various reasons...
1- they punched in the wrong pin number (on accident - some stores only give you one shot and if it is wrong it comes up as "declined")
2- you made a lot of purchases with the pin side of your card that day (it flags your card- supposed to help w/ id theves, but sometimes it can flag you too)
3- the magnetic strip on the back is going out (being too close to a cell phone for too long, static electricity, just an old card, etc.)
if you call the 1-800 number on the back of your card they can help you. it's probably just the strip on the back.

Ok thanks everyone, was on the phone today with bank.....drum roll;it was their line down. The poor girl, said she's been yelled at all morning and thanked me for being polite and understanding, and even offered a letter from the bank apologizing for my embarrassement.
I used it today and called the bank to let her know it was up and running.
And Karrie, you are right,my card is getting worn so they are giving us new ones ahead of time:)
Thanks everyone!!

So I was quite close in my assesment of what might have gone wrong. Sometimes the lines go down here...usually I am at the gas pump and have already pumped my gas and then my card isn't accepted! OH how I freak.....thank goodness I have had another means of payment when this has occured!!
Glad it is figured out.

Have you ever went to draw out a couple hundred from an ATM and it's not given you enough? I did that and only got about $60; it messed up my whole account, was a huge phone hassel, etc! Took over 2 weeks to get my money credited back to my bank. If I have to get a larger bit of money, I go into town now instead of the gas station here. Better to spend the extra gas money than to ever go thru that again!

Just another note on Debit/ATM Cards.....
Banks charge differently for different transactions (not all charge the same) but you might want to check into this with your bank and alter your habits based on the way your bank charges you......
Ie. If I use my debit card as a "credit" transaction and sign my name I am not charged for the transaction (the Merchant is charged).
If I use my debit card as a "debit" transaction and enter my PIN I am charged a transaction fee. (The Merchant is not charged)!
This is why when you swipe your card it automatically comes up with a "debit" transaction and you must cancel it out to process your card as a "credit"!!!! :D

Nan, those are good tips! My bank use to charge me $.21 cents if I used my card as a debit card, but nothing if I used it as a charge card, they just changed that rule, thankfully, I guess they got to many complaints about that one!

My bank doesn't charge for debit (thank God! I almost never have cash.), and I just learned about the cancel-use credit deal from the WalMart cashier. My paypal card pays cash back for credit but nothing for debit. Paypal also pays a nice CD like interest rate on your balance if you have the business account!

Bank's have to to make the income from someone (consumer or merchant) :) but I'd rather not pay if I don't have to! :D
