What would you do with your tax rebate check? It is expected that your tax rebate check will be paid out in May or June (and knowing our Government much later!).

The way things are going right now I am paying off all the bills I can. Then I am going to start dumping everything extra from our check into the savings account. This world is getting strange! I'm scared!:(

Well I've heard so many different things. I have heard for federal no, but if you pay state tax then you have to claim it for state.
I am really hoping that is verified soon. I would hate to think we get a tax break and then we have to pay taxes on it.

As much as I'd like to use it to do something special with my family (weekend trip to Leavenworth - a three hour drive to the mountains for wine tasting, walking, etc), I'll probably use it to pay something down - utility bills are always high this time of year. Maybe a little of both now that I think about it depending on how much we get - $300 for weekend trip to the mountains - the rest to pay bills!

I agree I would love to just go spend it all,but need to get rid of a few bills and save the rest.

We're using it towards hardwood/laminate flooring throughout the whole house!! :) The lady we bought our house from was a chain smoker with a dog that she let pee throughout the whole house, and after her living in the house for 7 years and our puppy's potty training last year, the carpet is ready for the dump!! :)

You will not have to pay taxes on it as it isn't something that you will claim. It isn't considered "income" it is more like a "rebate". They did this several years ago under the same principal. It was in order to "boost" the economic downfall.
Basically, all it is is a surplus of money that they are putting back into the economy with hopes of everyone spending it to boost sales and keep interest rates from falling any further. Not that it will do a lot for anyone, unless you have lots of kids, but I guess every thin dime helps. I wish they would use those billions to pay down our deficit so that the American Dollar was worth something again. Pretty bad when the Canadian dollar is worth more than ours! Last time I saw it, for every $1 you gave, you got back $0.96 in Canadian.

http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/01/tax_rebate_could_be_coming_you.html
From that:
Q: Why do some people call these payments "prebates"?
A: Because they're technically going to be credits based on tax year 2008. The government doesn't want you to wait until 2009 to get this money, so it's issuing checks now.
.. So remember, that means less when you get the next return!!

But as previously stated, it may be a "pre"bate and is just an advance on any money you'll get on your 2008 tax return. Here's another good article on this.
http://www.usnews.com/articles/business/economy/2008/01/24/how-tax-rebates-would-affect-you.html
So if it's a "pre"bate, what happens if the money you get this year exceeds what you get in a refund for 2008? Do you owe the money to the IRS then?

The politician did not mean that we would literally be borrowing the money from China.
Since the US is a free enterprise system, China is perfectly within its right to invest in American banks. Some people believe that foreign investments are what's keeping the U.S. afloat.

I read it on the IRS website. I will see if I can find it again. It pretty much said that if you got your income tax back direct deposit that is how you will get the money back in May. If you got it mailed to you then they would actually mail you a check in May.

Basic Information on the Stimulus Payments
You've heard about it. Now find out how to get yours.
What is it? It's an economic stimulus payment that more than 130 million households will receive starting in May. It's not taxable, and it won't reduce your 2007 or 2008 refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.
Are you eligible? You're eligible if you have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) and show qualifying income of at least $3,000 on your federal tax return. Both people listed on a "married filing jointly" return must have valid SSNs to qualify for the payment if only one has a valid SSN, neither can receive the payment.
Not eligible at the current time? If your circumstances change and you become eligible after you file your 2007 federal tax return, you can always file an amended return using Form 1040X. If you're not eligible this year but you become eligible next year, you can claim the economic stimulus payment next year on your 2008 tax return.
How do you get it? Just file a a federal tax return for 2007, even if you normally don't have to because your income usually doesn't meet the filing threshhold. You can't get it if you don't file.
How much will you get? The actual amount depends on the information contained on your tax return. Eligible individuals will receive between $300 and $600. Those who are eligible and file a joint return will receive a total of between $600 and $1,200. Those with children will get an additional $300 for each qualifying child. To qualify, a child must be eligible under the Child Tax Credit and have a valid Social Security number. We have various examples for you check out.
The payments phase out at certain income levels, so those with higher incomes may receive a reduced payment or even no payment.
How will you receive the payment? Be sure to choose direct deposit when you file your tax return, even if you aren't due a regular tax refund on your tax return. That way, the stimulus payment will go right to your bank account. Otherwise, we'll mail you a check.

This comes directly from the IRS website:
What You Can Do to Report Phishing, E-mail Scams and Bogus IRS Web Sites
If you receive an unsolicited e-mail communication claiming to be from the IRS, please forward the original message to: phishing@irs.gov using the instructions provided below. You may not receive an individual response to your e-mail because of the volume of reports we receive each day.
The IRS does not initiate taxpayer communications through e-mail. In addition, the IRS does not request detailed personal information through e-mail or ask taxpayers for the PIN numbers, passwords or similar secret access information for their credit card, bank or other financial accounts.
Do not open any attachments to questionable e-mails, which may contain malicious code that will infect your computer. Please be advised that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers via e-mails.
How to forward a phishing e-mail
It is important that the original communication you received is included, as well as Internet headers. The following instructions will assist you in forwarding a phishing communication to the IRS.
In MS Outlook
You can forward a message without double clicking to open it in a new window. Highlight the e-mail in the message list of your inbox and follow the directions for your particular mail client:
Create a new message
Drag and drop the phishing e-mail into the body of the new message. This ensures the original message is contained as an attachment with the appropriate Internet headers)
Address the message to phishing@irs.gov and send it
Or
Open the phishing e-mail message*
Select View > Options. The Internet headers will appear. You can copy these as you normally copy text
Forward the original message to phishing@irs.gov, with the copied message headers pasted into this message
In Outlook Express
You can forward a message without double clicking to open it in a new window. Highlight the e-mail in the message list of your inbox and follow the directions for your particular mail client:
Create a new message

Address the message to phishing@irs.gov and send it
Or
Open the phishing e-mail message*
Select File > Properties > Details. The Internet headers will appear. You can copy these as you normally copy text
Forward the original message to phishing@irs.gov, with the copied message headers pasted into this message
In Mulberry
You can forward a message without double clicking to open it in a new window. Highlight the e-mail in the message list of your inbox and follow the directions for your particular mail client:
Select Message > Forward
Select the option Include Headers in quote. Click the Forward button.
Address the forwarded message to phishing@irs.gov
In Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird Mail
Select View > Headers > All
Select Message > Forward As > Inline
Address the forwarded message to phishing@irs.gov
If you are using an alternative to these e-mail clients, please consult your provider for instructions on how to forward messages with Internet headers.
If the methods above do not work, at a minimum, please send the underlying link of the phishing Web site.
If the suspicious e-mail includes a file attachment, it is safer to simply highlight the message and forward it. Some configurations, especially in Windows environments, may allow the execution of arbitrary code upon opening and viewing a malicious e-mail message.
The IRS can use the information, URLs and links in the suspicious e-mails you forward to trace the hosting Web site and alert authorities to help shut down the fraudulent sites.
What to do if you become aware of an IRS related phishing or bogus Web site
If you identify a Web site posing as IRS.gov, please forward the URL to: phishing@irs.gov
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
The IRS does not initiate taxpayer communications through e-mail. Get your tax information at IRS.gov, the only Web site sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service.

where did you read this? it should only be check form-direct deposits onloy apply to tax refunds. when you do an amendment to a tax return, you always get a paper check even if you had direct deposit for your refund in the same year.
It came directly from the IRS website, you can check all the info on there site

Unfortunately, you can only get back what your tax liabilty was for 2007 or the 600/1200 plus 300 per kid maximun. Since I was on layoff last year, I didn't make enough in total to have one after my standard deduction and exemptions, so I only get the minimum.

Here's a good website that explains the process:
http://www.smartmoney.com/tax/advice...-Money-to-Most
Here's a good link I found explaining the rebate. I think that is you qualify for the rebate, then you can get UP TO the maximum the bill allows if your tax liability for 2007 is equal to or greater than that. So for example, a married couple with no children who make less than $17,500 would only get $600 in total because their income does not exceed the standard deductions plus 2 exemptions (10,700 + 6,800 =17500). They make more than $6000 in total, ,but have no liability after the dedcution and exemptions so they only qualify for $300 each.
Similarly, a single parent with one child who claims head of household and makes less than $14,650 (7850+6800=14650) would only get $300 for themselves and $300 for their child.
Also, say someone meets these threshholds but does not pay the full amount of the credit in their tax liability, then they would only get up to their tax liability amount. So if they are married and make more than $17500, but only had a $750 liability, then the receive $750, NOT $1200.
Kind of a bummer, but money is money-I'll take whatever they want to give me!

IRS Announces Economic Stimulus Payment Schedules, Provides Online Payment Calculator
IR-2008-44, March 17, 2008
WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service announced today that it will begin sending more than 130 million economic stimulus payments starting May 2. The initial round of weekly payments will be completed by early July.
The IRS also announced the availability of a new online calculator on IRS. gov to help people determine the amount of their stimulus payments.
Stimulus payments will be made by direct deposit to people who choose to receive their 2007 income tax refunds through direct deposit. All others will receive their economic stimulus payments in the form of a paper check.
To receive an economic stimulus payment, people just need to file their tax returns as they usually do, said IRS Acting Commissioner Linda E. Stiff. The payments will be automatic for the vast majority of taxpayers. Some lower-income workers and recipients of certain Social Security and veterans benefits who dont normally need to file a tax return will need to do so in order to receive a stimulus payment. IRS. gov has all the information people need to help them obtain a stimulus payment.
Stimulus payments will be sent out in the order of the last two digits of the Social Security number used on the tax return.
Because the IRS will use the Social Security number to determine when checks are mailed, taxpayers may receive their checks at different times than their neighbors or other family members. On a jointly filed return, the first Social Security number listed will determine the mail-out time.
The IRS expects to make about 34 million payments within the first three weeks after the payment schedule begins May 2. With more than 130 million households expected to receive stimulus payments, more than 25 percent of the payments will be made in the first three weeks.
Taxpayers who choose direct deposit on their federal income tax returns can expect to receive their economic stimulus payments between May 2 and May 16 provided their returns were received and processed by April 15, 2008. For taxpayers who did not choose direct deposit on their tax return but whose returns were processed by April 15, the paper checks will be in the mail starting May 16, with the initial mailings completed by around July 11.
The IRS is also announcing today the availability of an on-line calculator on IRS. gov to help taxpayers determine if they are eligible to receive an economic stimulus payment and if they are, how much they can expect. Anyone who has prepared a 2007 income tax return can use the calculator. It will ask taxpayers a series of questions, so they should have their 2007 tax returns handy. After answering the questions, the calculator will provide the projected dollar value of the payment.
Below are the schedules for economic stimulus payments related to tax returns processed by April 15, 2008.
Stimulus Payment Schedule for Tax Returns
Received and Processed by April 15
Direct Deposit Payments
If the last two digits of your Social Security number are: Your economic stimulus payment deposit should be sent to your bank account by:
00 20 May 2
21 75 May 9
76 99 May 16
Paper Check
If the last two digits of your Social Security number are: Your check should be in the mail by:
00 09 May 16
10 18 May 23
19 25 May 30
26 38 June 6
39 51 June 13
52 63 June 20
64 75 June 27
76 87 July 4
88 99 July 11
A small percentage of tax returns will require additional time to process and to compute a stimulus payment amount. For these returns, stimulus payments may not be issued in accordance with the schedule above, even if the tax return was processed by April 15.
All or part of an economic stimulus payment may be applied to back taxes or certain other debts of the taxpayer, such as delinquent child support and student loans. In such cases, the IRS will send a letter to the taxpayer explaining the offset.
To accommodate people whose tax returns are processed after April 15, the IRS will continue sending weekly payments. People who file tax returns after April 15 and receive a refund can expect to receive their economic stimulus payments in about two weeks after receiving their tax refunds, but not before the date they would have received their payment if the return had been processed by April 15. To ensure taxpayers receive their stimulus payment this year, they must file a tax return by Oct. 15.
Two bureaus of the Treasury Department are involved in making the payments. The IRS will calculate the amount of each economic stimulus payment based on the tax year 2007 income tax returns it receives. The IRS will then forward the information to the Financial Management Service (FMS), which is the bureau of the Treasury Department that makes federal payments such as Social Security benefits, federal income tax refunds and, now, economic stimulus payments.
The IRS reminds taxpayers that they can get their stimulus payments faster by using direct deposit when they file their tax return.
In addition, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically. For people who normally dont need to file a tax return, the IRS and Free File Alliance have a special program set up to allow for free electronic filing.

Wonder how they determine how much you qualify for? I am curious....
Most Americans will soon receive rebate checks from the IRS worth anywhere between $300 to $1,200 or more, and many businesses have already launched marketing campaigns hoping to lure those potential customers.
Yet, many folks will not be eligible for a check at all and could end up in a bind if they've already hit the mall and put extra charges on their credit cards, counting on the rebate cash.
More from MarketWatch:
• Stay on Top of Your Taxes
• Stimulus Payment Mail Schedule
• Beware These Top Tax Scams
The global tax firm of Grant Thornton says if you belong to any of the following six categories of taxpayers, you should think twice before charging a purchase with plans to pay it off with that "free" government money. You may not be eligible for a rebate -- or at least not for a full or timely one -- if:
1. You owe the tax man money. The IRS has acknowledged that it will deduct from all rebate checks any federal tax debt. The agency will also withhold on behalf of all 50 states, and even Puerto Rico and American Samoa, any money owed in state or territory taxes. If you owe back taxes to the IRS or any state government, you could see your rebate reduced or gone altogether.
2. You make too much money. The rebate payments will begin to phase out for individuals with gross incomes above $75,000, and for married couples filing jointly with incomes over $150,000. If your adjusted gross income is above those levels, calculate your rebate carefully before going on a spending spree. Payments to high-income taxpayers will be reduced by 5% of all income above the phase-out thresholds.
3. You don't make enough money. If you have less than $3,000 in qualifying income, don't expect a rebate. Only those with $3,000 or more of income will be eligible. However, you will be able to count income typically exempt from taxation, like Social Security or veteran's benefits, to reach that minimum.
4. You don't file a tax return. If you don't file a tax return, you won't receive a rebate. Many people with low incomes are not required to file a return, but will need to in order to receive a rebate. If you have over $3,000 in qualifying income, file a return even if you don't have to.
Want More Money-Saving Tax Tips?
Visit our 2008 Tax Center
5. You're just unlucky. The IRS's recently released rebate payment schedule is based on the last two digits of return filer's Social Security number. However, the IRS warns that a small percentage of tax returns will require additional time to process. For these returns, stimulus payments will not be made according to schedule. Taxpayers who put purchases on their credit cards in anticipation of a quick rebate check may be forced to pay unexpected interest if their return processing is held up.
6. You don't have a valid Social Security Number. Some taxpayers without Social Security numbers file tax returns using an IRS-generated Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. These people will not be eligible for a rebate. If married and filing jointly, each spouse must have a valid SSN to receive the rebate.

Because people who only receive goverment payments from social security and the veterans are also eligible to get $300. However, in most cases they don't need to file a return. So, since the rebates are being given based on the tax records for 2007, they need to file a return anyway even if they don't owe anything or get anything back. :)

Ditto for us, right down to our son being a Junior in HS (turned 17 at the end of 2007). Ours will be covering medical bills as well... and what is left (if any)will go towards a vaction fund.
Looks like mine will go towards the $1,000 deductible for the CAT scan I had to have yesterday! :( It's always something!!!

The sad thing is that some people spend it as fast as they get it, then they wonder why they are in debt and cant save a dime! (just know that from working at a bank for so longgggggggg! You are never going to hear the end of people coming in asking if they had a deposit last night!)

Ok now I am crying again. I have been a basket case all night long. Sunday when we came home there were about 5 really small piles of poop with blood in them. It was strange becasue he doesnt poop in the house. But at that point I didnt think it was that bad becasue he was still pretty normal acting. We watched him for the rest of the night and no more blood. Even the next morning no blood in the poop. When my hubby got home yesterday there were about 15 piles of pure blood. Huge piles and it looked like they were blood clots. He rushed him to the animal hospital, he had lost so much blood they put him on an IV and put more blood in his body. They though it may have been a gastro dieseae but that came back negative. So now it is a waiting game. When we took him in they told us he had a 50/50 chance becasue the amount of blood loss. This morning when I called to check on him there has been no more vomiting or pooping blood since last night. They vet is still waiting on a lab test for one other thing. They did x-rays and found nothing. I just want him to get better and come home. They have pain meds in his IV so they said he is just relaxing and sleeping.

me too....sorry....I did the caculator thingy and it said 1,500 I thought the cap was 1,200
the cap is up to $600 per individual, $1200 per married filing joint couples. If you qualify and your tax liabilty for 2007 was as much as or more than the cap, then you get the max. Then, if you have qualifying children (i. e. they are under 17 as of the end of 2007 and qualify for the child tax credit otherwise), then you also get $300 per child. :D

Why in the world would I only receive $300???? Shouldn't I receive $600???
Well, for example. I normally would have received the $600 just for me as well. However, I was laid off for several months last year and my income was wiped out just with my standard deduction and exemptions for myself and my son. I never even got to use the child tax credit because I didn't need it, and then I couldn't use the additional child tax credit because I didn't make enough to qualify for it. So I had no tax liability but made more than $3000. That gets me $300 for me and $300 for my son....but I still don't have it even though I electronically filed and got my refund direct deposit in January 08. Plus my last two digits of my social fall into the first category for payments. Go figure!

Okay ladies...here's the skinny of the direct deposits this week. Although the IRS did start sending the deposits out on April 28th, they are only guaranteeing that all rebates by direct deposit will be in your account by May 2nd. It is still roughly following the original payment schedule set up by the last two digits of your social, but it may not be necessarily so in every case-such as myself. How do I know this? I called the IRS, and got a very nice woman. She has her social in the first group like mine but didn't get hers yet either-and she works for them!!!!! Anyway, the media is not telling the whole story and it's getting everyone into a tizzy!!!

No that's not true. I was just reading up on the IRS website. It all depends on the last 2 digits of your social.
If you sign up for direct deposit on your tax return, find the last two digits of your Social Security number to determine when the tax rebate will be deposited into your account:
00 - 20, no later than May 2
21 - 75, no later than May 9
76 - 99, no later than May 16

It also says this
The "vast majority of people" will receive stimulus payments according to the posted schedule, Burke said, "but it's a big system, a lot of returns go through our pipeline," so some returns may not go exactly according to schedule.
I know I am getting a rebate and I havent gotten it yet, so I think the May 2nd thing isn't exactly going to happen.

I believe that the checks are going out most days, except Thursday. They prepare for the largest deposit on Fridays. Since this is not your "normal" refund and most people are getting them, they are sending them more frequently to alleviate a lot of issues with banks. :D

Mine already came and went. I paid off my computer before the no interest period expired. So it's like I got to use the computer for 5 months before I paid for it! Woo-hoo!

will be giving $400 to Son & DIL for their 4 year anniversary ( I always give them $100 for every year they are married..........) Wait till their 20th ;)
Hubby's b-day today so taking him to casino tomorrow night........there goes another $200.

I just checked my account and it's in there now! We're using some of it to pay our state taxes...we always owe the state since neither one of us pays state taxes...kinda sucks but we always get enough from federal to cover it so I guess I can't really complain. We don't know what we'll be doing with the rest of it though.

We got ours today! Just a little bit more money to get us through to hubby's college graduation! It's in December, by the way. It's been a long, broke four years!
