In the interest of helping out people interested in participating in the book club, (or those who just want to find a book and not pay full price!) here is a list of places I like to go:

PLEASE add to this if you know of other places!!

www.half.com
I almost always start here! Most books are very cheap, and you can select the condition (New, Like New, Good, etc).
Most tend to be at least 1/2 off.
Must pay shipping.

www.amazon.com
I always go here to read reviews. I don't generally buy a book from amazon unless it is through the marketplace (people like you and me post their books, similar to half.com)
Very good prices in the marketplace (used books)
Must pay shipping.

www.abebooks.com
I usually look here as well. Some new, many used. I can usually find the harder-to-find titles here.
Usually really good prices, especially on harder to find titles.
Must pay shipping

www.paperbackswap.com
Book trading site (post books, send them out, you pay shipping to send out - its really cheap to send media mail - get credits for sending them out, use credits to request free books - the shipper pays shipping)
You can purchase credits instead of trading books. $3.25 per credit (if you do this, you use your credits and pay nothing additional)
If anyone is part of paperbackswap, or joins, please buddy me and PM me telling me to buddy you! We can share books that way, or browse/request from each other directly! It is a great way to help each other gain credits and get new books! My profile name is the same as it is here.

www.frugalreader.com
Book trading site (post books, send them out, you pay shipping to send out - its really cheap to send media mail - get credits for sending them out, use credits to request free books - the shipper pays shipping)
You can purchase credits instead of trading books. $2.99 per credit (if you do this, you use your credits and pay nothing additional)
I'm just learning about this site, so PM me if you are on it already and I'll see if I can set you up as a buddy or something - my profile name is the same as here also!

Then there are always local used book stores and the library!

They recently opened a used book swap/purchase store in the neighboring town. I haven't checked it out yet, but I think it's pretty exciting! :D

Here is a website I like to use when looking for books

www.cheapestbookprice.com

Step 1: Search for cheap books by using the book's Title, Author, Keyword or ISBN.

Step 2: When you've located your books, click on the "Find the Cheapest Price!" button. The Multi-Store Book Search will search through multiple online bookstores, in order to get your books cheap.

Note: Please be patient. Sometimes it may take up to 60 seconds in order to retrieve the results from all the online bookstores.

Step 3: Locate the best deal using the results provided. Click on "Select" to buy the book, knowing that you found it at the bookstore that has the cheapest price!

Have you checked it out? We have one of those, but when I take books in, they rarely want them. They do tell me they'll take them off my hands for free though.

Their book prices are also pretty pricey for used books. I can usually do better on eBay or half.com even with the shipping charges.

Let me know how yours is.

And there's another book site similiar to Paperbackswap (http://www.paperbackswap.com). It's called BookMooch (http://www.bookmooch.com), it's not US only, it's international but if you can't afford to send overseas then you can set up your account to US only. I also use BookCloseouts.com (http://www.bookcloseouts.com)

Thanks for this post. I have been using Half.com but sometimes they aren't that cheap. I will have to look at the others I didn't know about. There are quite a few books I want!

I go to our local Goodwill stores for my books. If I go to the ones in town and the one in the next town over, I get paperbacks for 59 cents each, sometimes buy one get one free. I also love the dollar bag sales at the thrift shops...you buy a brown paper bag for a dollar and you stuff everything you can fit in there. You can get about 40 paperback books into a brown paper bag and still have room for 20 small packages of Clifford stickers and 40 Crayola Halloween Crayon packs....I did that and sold the stickers and crayons on ebay....made a killing!!!! :>

I read about this site on a different forum and I have not done it myself. It is basically a swap site where they match you up with someone else who has that book and you can earn credits for books you have to swap.
You must have a valid .edu e-mail address. http://www.socialbib.com
