I also have migraines.. I take Depakote everyday for them and Maxalt when I get one and need instant relief. These seem to work for me. Since beginning the meds, I will only get them about once a month and they aren't as bad...

I feel for you!!! When I get really bad ones, it hurts to lay in bed with my eyes closed!!!

Michelle,
Do you feel the Depakota is keeping them at bay,so to speak?I take Midrine right now to stop them, but if I don;t get it right away I'm doomed .I know the closing eyes part, its a real bummer.
Thanks for sharing though, sometimes I think DH doesnt understand the true pain from them:rolleyes:

My daughter and I both get migraines. I was on the depakote, and yes, it does keep them at bay. Makes me feel like a slug though, all the time. :( One of the best things I've found to do is to take a bath, just as hot as you can stand it, and lay back and just very slowly drizzle the hot water over the top of your head. It's best if you have someone who can do that for you so you can relax as much as possible, but it's still fairly effective to do it yourself. It helps to relax the constricted blood vessels in your head and relieves the pressure. :)

I've been getting migraines for years. Some thought it was tied to hormone levels in my BC pills, others thought it was for stress. I have gotten them regularly regardless of being on or off BC pills, or in and out of stressful environments. I have had an arsenal or prescriptions for the last few years-- everything EXCEPT opiates. While they are the only thing that effetively gets rid of migraines for me, I find that while the headache is gone, I'm left drooling and worthless. I ask my doctors not to prescribe any sort of pain killer.

I have taken so many I can't remember them all.. Duradrin worked ok to reduce, but not get rid of, a sever migraine. It restricted the size of capillaries in my brain and had a mild muscle relaxer to work at muscles at the base of my neck.

Topomax is what I have right now, but it has the weirdest side effects I have EVER heard of. Possible side effects were weight loss, possible loss of vision while on medication (and after discontinuing), insomnia -- but paired with a state of severe sleepiness (it's the only way I can explain that). Also, it made soft drinks or anything else carbonated taste really, REALLY bad. Others were "depression... difficulty with memory (NOS), somnolence, paresthesia, psychomotor slowing, dizziness, and nausea." Immediately after I take it, I have a very bad problem with word recall, and alot of the other side effects have gotten to me. I am not a fan of this medication at all, and I am not sure that it's actually made a difference.

I was once given Atenolol- a blood pressure medication. It's actually given more to people who have heart attacks than it is to people with headaches/migraines, although it is prescribed for both. I have low blood pressure already- this one was disastrous.

While they never figured out exactly what was causing mine, they ruled out food pretty easily. But if that could be a factor for you- look into it. A co-worker of mine had a list the length of her arm of foods she could not eat that specifically triggered migraines. Lights get to me rather badly too. I sometimes have to go to work (and used to go to class) and do my work in my sunglasses like an idiot.. but it helps.

I could type about migraines for hours.. I'll stop myself now... Hope someone gets something helpful out of my ranting.

Thats what dont like about the meds. I don't like feeling out of sorts as i call it,my migraines cause me to talk like Im 3sheets to the wind9drunk)so I dont want meds making me feel that way as well.
I;m gonna try that hot bath one and see if it'll help I cant take anymore med tonight,so i guess i'll deal with it:rolleyes:

Depakote does work for me... We tried sooooo many meds when I was first diagnosed, and this worked the best for me. There were many that worked, but I couldn't function (they made me too drowsy or I couldn't wake up in the morning, etc..). So I think it's just a thing that you will have to work with your doc and find what's best for you.

Me and my granddaughter are both on topamax. It has helped us. When I first went on it the doc told me to watch for certain side effects, like sodas tasting bad and a few of the other things that happened to you. But the docs started us on small amounts and then raised the mg. She said if I had any of these symtoms she would lower the mg. I've took all kinds of meds, but this has helped me.

Once- I had a migraine so bad I went to the ER because nothing worked and I was in tears!! The DR decided to "test" a theory of his and proceeded to put Lidocane or novacane..one of them numbing things up my nose  so it would numb the spot in there that hurts when you have a migraine! It worked for 5 minutes..then I felt as if my throat had closed up completely!! That was the numbing meds because they eventually drip down the back of your throat...by 15 minutes later...the migraine was back!!

I have also ran very very cold water in my tub and then stood for 10 minutes....the blood rushes to your feet and away from your head therefor giving you some relief! My chiroprator told me about this trick once!! It does give you some much needed relief!!

One thing my doctor said is that ALL medication is going to have a side effect. You have to decide if you want to live with the condition or the side effect. The med that I take has the side effect (for me) of some hair loss. If you look at my member pic, I do have hair!!! LOL But the hair loss is a little more than the normal. I live with that, because I don't seem to have any other side effects w/ the meds and they have really ALMOST stopped the migraines. My trigger is my monthly cycle. I guess b/c of the hormone changes. I figure a migraine once a month is soooooo much better than the 2 a week I was averaging before the meds.

I actually suffered from migraines and headaches real frequent- i'm talking headaches almost every day, and migraines 2-3 times a week in cases. I went and got a new pair of glasses in Oct. 2007, quit smoking in Dec. of 2007, also stopped drinking caffeinated products, (just juice, water, and milk) And i officially have only had a few headaches since. No migraines at all! I used to get them so bad i would throw up. My best friend used to be any sort of tylenol, ibuprofen, asprin, anything to take the pain away. I've only bought one bottle of 100 since Oct. where i used to buy once a month. Not that i'm saying everyone will have the same problems, but maybe there's one person out there and sees this and thinks, "geez, i do all of that!" Good luck ladies!:)

I get horrible migraines and I take Topamax. If I get a migraine then the world basically stops. I cannot take Topamax unless I am at home and in bed.

My migraines actually makes me very sick to my stomach. I usually get sick a few times.....

WORST MIGRAINES EVER!:(

I am another one who gets migraines. Stress is my biggest trigger, and I am currently sitting on one right now-it's just waiting to attack!

I am now to the point of getting migraines at least 1-2 times a week, and with the last set of them, I went to the doctor. My doctor wouldn't give me anything prescription (Maxalt, etc) since I'm no longer taking birth control pills. Hubby and I had original plans to start trying to conceive this month, and she was afraid that by taking the drugs, I could cause harm if I got pregnant.

I do take Verapamil for my high blood pressure, and migraine treatment is another use for this drug. My first round of the Verapamil a few years helped keep the migraines at bay, but this time it's not doing anything:(

I feel so bad for everyone who suffers from migraines-my heart goes out to you all!

I can honeslty say when I was pregnant the migraines were few and far between, due to hormonal levels adjusting, now I get them several times a month again, mine are always STRESS INDUCED.I know what you mean by sitting one one,I feelthem coming on and by then its too late.;)

Has anyone tried massage therapy? Studies show that while it will not help get rid of one while you are having it,getting a regular massage will help decrease the frequency, duration, and intensity of them. I know that massage is not in the budget for many people, but if you weigh in the lost work, meds, doctor visits, etc--it may be a more affordable option than you think!;)

On another note, I once had a guy stop me on the street and tell me I had beautiful arches and was wondering if he could massage them. Turns out, he was studying feet at a massage school, but it still freaked me out.

That would have been kind of freaky. He shouldn't have approached you like that. Males already have a hard enough time in this profession. Hardly any men want a male massage therapist and most women don't either.

An Australian study recently found that B vitamins may help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. They supplemented with B6, B12, and folic acid--daily doses of 2mg of folic acid, 25mg vitamin B6, and 400 micrograms of B12. After six months, the study group receiving the supplements reported a drop from 60% disability to 30% disability, drop in migraine frequency, and drop in migraine severity. The website won't allow cutting and pasting the article without permission, so here's the link: http://www.nutraingredients.com/Research/B-vitamins-may-offer-migraine-relief Hope that this info helps some of you folks suffering from migraines out there.

the only time i get migraines is when i get overstressed or tension in my body. the only cure i've found is take something for it, lie a cold cloth on my head and just completely relax.

I had one continuous severe migraine for 6 months after a bad car accident (tractor trailor cab hit us). Finally, I found a physical therapist who was able to release the siezed muscle in my neck and then worked with me for another 6 months to get my range of motion back and lessen the pain.

One thing he told me to to was to get two tennis balls and put them side by side. Next, wrap them horizontally with masking tape. Then wrap the area between the two balls vertically with tape to create tension. Cover with a sock or something soft.

If you lie on your back with the tennis balls horizontally under the base of your skull, eventually it will help release tension. It really hurts at first, but over time when you do this the muscle relaxes faster and your head just drops down.

It has been three years now and I still have my tennis balls in case I feel the migraine coming on. It's helped me a lot. Try to google this as I read about it online after he told me about it as well.

Good luck!!

I am a sufferer also for many years. get them now maybe 2 x a month now its before aunt flo comes. i get bad leg cramps and stomach cramps but can deal with them. i used all the stuff pretty much they have out there. now use 100 mg of imitrex take the tablet. takes a few minutes till it starts working. did use the shots hated them dont like needles as it is. made me nauseous when i used them. i think after the years you get immune to the different stuff since the others stopped working after a while. did try the over the counter stuff like excedrin never worked made it worse. did also take the meds to keep them from occuring so often , in the beginning i was getting them daily. forgot what the dr gave me. then went off them since i stopped getting them daily. thank goodness. horrible. i get them so bad sometimes staying in bed is the best. but who can do that all the time with work.... i have seen doctors before and it is a migrane nothing else. hope they do go away eventually will be 51 tomorrow. horrible when I get them . sometimes they just come on no warning. and when i am not doing anything to cause it. i try to pinpoint what would at the time and can't . it can be the weather also when it gets hot out. hang in there ladies hopefully they will come up with a sure cure to stop them dead in their track or prevent them .

yes the cold cloth can help also. dark room with no noise, light...... they have some type of cloth i found at the dollar store it has some menthol on it and its for migranes you put it on your forehead and it helps cool the pain. have to check again. for a dollar i think for 3 or 4. cvs and rite aid probably have something like that also. when you see something good for a dollar like that buy a few.
