I live in a Mobile Home Park where everyone owns the lot and house they live in, twice a year they have a huge yard sale, but only about 10 participate, this year was a total flop for all of us, I guess with gas prices, and everything else going up people are holding onto their money, which I totally understand, but now I have leftovers once again so when the next sale comes I am ready, prices are already marked, just unload and sell, lol, hope you all had or are having a great holiday, God Bless Our Troops!!!

I'm trying to decide when and if we want to have a yard sale...the last one we had was a flop too! We might be getting a new couch,so if we do that, then I will put the old one in the sale. But until then,I am collecting items for a possible sale and putting them in our storage bldg!

Thats kinda sad to hear! I live in the midwest and in our particular area sales are a big hit! Infact the police are always pulling up and telling people to move. Theres so many cars parked you can't even drive through the street.
Our local paper has a special Garage sale section and you can also call the local radio and put it on party line for free.
Each town dedicates at least one weekend for the "city wide" we pass out maps at several locations and bring people in from out of town! Its a great way to make extra money abd get rid of your unwanted items!
I have a rule if it doesn't sell then it goes to the salvation army or christian minisrty.

I haven't been to a garage sale in years! My parents used to bring the newspaper in the car, and make a whole afternoon out of visiting all the local garage sales. I remember being generally bored out of my mind in the back seat, but I always made out like a bandit- tons of barbies and used barbie furniture and clothes, not to mention dolls and just about anything I could con my Mom into thinking I couldn't live without for only 50 cents!
Unfortunately I live down a secluded dirt road, out in the middle of nowhere- so having my own garage sale is pretty much out of the question. My parents used to break down and have their own every summer, but if somebody on the block had a garage sale, my Mom would refuse to go. Heaven forbid the neighbors would think she was "needy" ... however, it would absolutely kill her that she might be missing something good, so she would send over one of us kids to scan the sale and report back to her! To this day, she has these two strange Egyptian statues that match absolutely -nothing-, because she was sure she was missing something great when us kids described them to her. She gave us money and we had to run over and buy them! I crack up every time I see them. She also at one point, made me run across a two-lane highway to get a big wicker basket out of somebody's trash, when I was about 8 years old! Oh sure, her reputation went untarnished, but mine was ruined for life, no doubt. :D

I have gotten some of my best finds in someone elses trash! No I don't intentionally set out to dumpster dive but if I see something that looks good why not? There tossing it anyway!
I also live so far out in the country my only neighbors are cows and one or to farmers on 4 wheelers. I really don't have anything to put in a sale. I sell it ebay or give it the salvation army or christian ministry. Ebay is great!!
Yes we get the paper on thurs night so I can map out friday stops and sat. stops no sense in back tracking! I often resell my cheap finds online! we also go to the local farmers market every sat morning.

You have some wonderful memories weather you know it or not, years from now you will have all these memories of fun times spent at yard sales with your parents, I remember my mom taking me to rummage sales and making me try on clothes, lol, and some of things she picked out cause they were only 15 cents, lol anyways your story made me laugh! I appreciated it!!

I love going to yard sales. I try and make Hubby stop, but he won't. Around here you will usually find carnival glass and childrens clothes. We also have have large trash pick up in our area, so at all hours of the night, people will drive by slow and see what you have by the curb. I know it doesn't sound fabulous, but people throw away decent stuff....

Rainsong, I enjoyed your story as well. Thanks for sharing!
I have never dumpster dived, but when I see something good sitting out with someone's garbage, I do not hesitate to grab it!
I am not crazy about having a garage sale on my own. When my mom has one though, I am right there with all of my stuff! Last time, I took my cooler and filled it with cans of Coke and Diet Coke I'd bought for $1.99 a 12-pack. I also threw in bottles of the Sam's Choice brand of bottled water. My mom scoffed at me at first, but I charged .50 cents apiece for it, and sold it all! People get thirsty when they are garage-saling, so of course they will buy something to drink!

When we have a garage sale my 12 year old entrapanuer (sp) sets up a drink stand of what ever powderd drink mix she can find in the kitchen. Some times it is Kool Aide others it is instant tea. she makes a killing off it, if htey dont buy any items they allways buy a drink! I just have to remind her not to charge a $1 for a dixie cup size lol.

That is an awesome idea! I'll have to make that suggestion to my kids next time we have a garage sale. Thanks!

Yard sales are very popular in my area. My development has one or two a year. I also go almost weekly to other yard sales in my area and have found many good finds.

When I have yard sales I buy the small bags of chips and pop on sale and make a killing. They keep the kids busy while the parents shop and buy more!

Ok...I've decided to have a yard sale but trying to decide the best time...before or after school starts? Also,if anyone has any tips...that would be great!
I think we might set up a drink stand and let the kids sell the lemonade or water...I'm sure they would have a great time!!

Labor Day weekend is a good time for a yard sale, atleast here it is, because it is the end of summer. Ilive in a resort community and the local newspaper puts a map with all the places that are having sales, and then lists them by small towns here...good idea.

Definately before the school season.I am a thrifty shopper I believe buy used and supplement with new. Thank goodness for garage sales. Great idea for the kids. my daughters highlight is getting to buy a cookie and drink from other kids at these sales.

Great to have found this. Grandma and I are having a yard sale, July 26,27 and 28th. I don't know how much of my stuff will sell. I am trying to sell some jewelry I made, and crocheted items. It will be great to spend time with Grandma though!

My philsophy is if you want to really get rid of it and you don't want to haul it back into your house. Sell it cheap!! I get mad at the sales where they want top dollar for an item.I think well your packing that one back in. The other thing I have done is after the sale I load it all up and send it to the christian ministry or salvation army. Then I made some cash and gave a nice donation for the thrift stores.Best of all is the stuff is no longer taking up space in my house!!
