I was recently reading a book about home quick fixes. In one of the chapters, it mentioned using coconut oil for a quick head lice fix. You're supposed to use approximatly 2 tbs. of coconut oil WITH your regular shampoo and wash as usual. You may have to repeat using only shampoo to insure your hair doesn't remain oily. Afterwards, wrap your damp hair in a towel for about 30 minutes, then comb through with a lice comb. You can shampoo your hair again afterwards if it is still oily. Apparently the coconut oil is lethal to the lice!! This may be a good alternative when nothing else works!

Supposedly, olive oil works for this as well- but I always heard that the oil treatments have to be repeated every 2-3 days for awhile, because they only kill the live lice and not the eggs. I'd have to purchase coconut oil anyway (who keeps that around the house?), so if I was going to go that far I'd probably just buy the old proverbial RID and be done with it. I bet this would be a really good idea to use on any pets in the household tho ... I've always wondered what people must do if somebody comes home with head lice and they have a lot of dogs or furry pets. Sure, they're "human" lice, but you know there would always be that one confused one taking up residence on Fluffy. I'm sure flea shampoo doesn't kill them- that would be too easy! :)

With five kids and a niece in our home we have had our battles with lice. I have used Olive Oil after the Rid treatment cause it makes it easier to pull the little suckers out of the hair. My two oldest girls have hair past theri butts. One thing we do as prevention is I put Tea Tree Oil in thier shampoo and conditioner. You can buy it with it already in there but it is way costly. This way I buy the usually and only a bottle of the oil. Add a few drops in each and shake to mix. I dont know why or if it really works but when I hear of an outbreak I do this for them and we dont bring it home. You can also put the oil directly on the hair and wahs it out but I cant touch the oil because I am allergic to it (found out the hard way ended up looking like cherry jello for a week). Aslo you can put a few drops in the leave in spray conditioners and detanglers. We have two bottles of htat one with and one without because the smell is strong if you do it the leave in way. But the smell disapates if you wash it in and rinse it out.

A friend of mine had a daycare and she was talking to a pharmacist and they said it you use hair spray or gel in the kids hair it helps prevent them from getting in the kids hair. The lice prefer a clean head with no chemicals in it and the gel or hair spray make a it taste bad to them. That is why they go for kids more then the parents hair because of how much hair product we adults tend to use i used to think it was a dirty head they prefered but the pharmacist's said it was the opposite they prefer a clean head.

That's good to know. Thanks. My cousins (boys) got lice once coming back from a week of camp. Their parents shaved their heads bold. Poor kids!
