I have two sister in laws who have done it. One got very ill but ended up losing A LOT of weight. Her doctor finally told her to quit excercising. She went from a Size 22 to a size 4 and has kept it off for over 3 year.s

My other SIL just did it this past year. She was really heavy, well over 300lbs and has lost over 100. She is 50 and looks great. She had to do it due to health concerns. She was hardly able to move due to arthritis and was giving herself 4 shots a day in the knees.

I had the Lap Band surgery in April of 2005. I initially lost 120 lbs, but have gained 20 lbs all thanks to Cokes! I'm at 170 lbs now. New Year's resolution #1, drink things other than cokes. lol. It was definitely one of the best things I've ever done and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
A really good site to visit is http://www.obesityhelp.com
Good luck!;)

Not really considering it. It would be nice to be thin but I am a chicken. I've had too many surgeries that I've had to have, I can't see doing and elective one and then possibly having to have more to get rid of the flab or excess skin!

I have had a lot of clients that have had it done--one family member and a couple friends. If you have any particular questions just pm me.
I got close at one point to qualifying for it with insurance. I was 80 pounds overweight and really considered gaining 20 more on purpose, but I was already so miserable that I couldn't imagine trying to gain more weight!!
I ended up losing it the old fashioned way--diet and exercise. I did my own version of the South Beach diet and exercised everyday. You are certainly right about the hanging skin. I had plenty of it. How much you will have depends on your genes, your age and your weight. I was so disappointed that no matter what I did I was still hanging everywhere. I got to the point where I was lifting more weights than most of the men in the gym!!! I finally decided to have a tummy tuck and have been happy with the results of that, but I still have a lot of extra skin. My upper legs and upper arms are the worst. Of course everyone says I look better than I did!

My mom had the lap band inserted in her stomach. She has had sooo many complications and can hardly eat anything anymore.

When she came to visit me a couple weeks ago she threw up anything she ate. It was horrible and hated seeing her go through that.:(

My mom had gastric bypass surgery, and has suffered from complications. She had gall bladder problems, and actually gained a good deal of weight back. I never could figure out the whole story, but when they went in to remove her gall bladder, my mom says they did some repair work to the gastric bypass surgery, and now she has lost all the weight again.

Here's what I've noticed though. The surgery does not cure the reasons why a person overeats, so if a person is not careful about what they eat, they will eventually be able to gain the weight back. I noticed New Year's Eve that my mom's pants are getting tight on her.

If you're considering it, I say to do some research, weigh the pros and cons, and decide what's best for you. Make an informed decision, so to speak.

I'm not sure if you've read about it here (I've talked about it in other posts), but I used to weigh 350 lbs. I lost my weight through diet and exercise like Dawn did. I struggle with it constantly though, and I am bad about yo-yoing. And yeah, I do have extra skin, which is devastating. But, I still look better than I did when I was overweight, and I definitely feel better. If you'd like to see a before picture of me, please PM me.

Brandy, I'm sorry about your mom. :(

Hi I had RNY 6 years ago this past December. Never regretted it. I was over 350 lbs. I got down to about 185 (on a 5' 10" frame). I got pregnant and did gain some back afterwards. Right Now I'd like to lose about 35 lbs to get me back where I want to be. My suggestion is RESEARCH RESARCH RESEARCH and this surgery is ONLY a TOOL. You don't magically lose the weight with no effort, you still have to work at it and follow your doctors instructions. And YES it is possible to gain weight back so it is in no way a magic cure. Bottom line I don't regret having surgery and if I had it to do over I'd do it again!

My closest friends both struggle with their weight. She has endured many surgeries and illnesses, and the resulting scars and physical damage restrict her exercise regimen. She has kept her weight under control by watching her diet pretty closely. No, she's not at ideal weight, but she hasn't gained any more in the past ten years since the last round of major surgeries.

Her husband was under constant threat of his job being downsized for six years, and ballooned up to about 400 pounds from stress eating. He went to Mexico for the surgery (insurance wouldn't cover it--scared his wife to death that he went for it in Mexico!) He has lost close to 200 pounds. His problems with the surgery: couldn't eat anything spicy at all for quite some time after the surgery--a lot of problems adjusting to eating small enough portions to avoid getting sick--even had to switch to gummy bear vitamins for something that wouldn't make him sick--lots of eating adjustments. Went out to eat with them a couple of months ago. He doesn't eat but even half of a burger and about six fries at Red Robin.

My older sister had it done a very long time ago when they opened you up and stapled your stomach. She almost died. Thank God she is under 200 now but at the time she was almost 400.

My niece had a different procedure. They make 5 holes and reduce the stomach by laser. Less invasive. She has lost 125 so far. She was 300.

I myself, have looked into it but I don't believe in having people cut me up if I don't have to be. Why do they wait until you are so fat that it is a higher risk operation since the weight makes it so dangerous?

Anyway, I have been trying to find out what diet they put them on. I asked my niece but I can't get a straight answer.

I thought that maybe I can do the diet instead of having the operation. It just is not worth getting myself cut up for a diet plan.

My sister was one of rare few that died from the surgery. It is not worth it to me to go through that. It is a hard decision to make

I didn't want to have the surgery either. Don't worry about going on a diet! Just start cutting back on the calories. :)

I had a friend who was told she was an good canidate for this surgery but because of her weight she couldn't get the surgery done, noone would touch her to much of a risk.
I too am over weight but just can't seem to get ot off, and now that i don't work and am limited to doing somethings its very hard. I messed up my knee and its hasn't been the same , plus i have 2 cracked vertabre in my lower back. My biggest gripe noone to walk with me or really help me through it.
Thanks for all the advice I have really thought about it but no insurance and no money to do it.

I would like to get weight loss surgery, but I am trying to avoid it. My DR says I do not qualify so I am going on a diet. Well I am on a diet right now. I have cut out all sugar (which is VERY hard) and eating healthy.

I mentioned this before about my mom having the lapband inserted in her stomach. I would not recommend this surgery to anyone. She had it removed after so many problems. She could not keep ANYTHING down after 2years. Scared me bigtime.:(
